Possibly because of cancelled orders, making space for additional launch day orders.
I'm just trying to do this phone as a clean setup/no backup but wanted to see if there was a way if I could basically backup my watch without the phone if that makes sense
Yea well I have other things to pick up anyways so I might as well while I'm there. I'm also picking up a case while at it. Of course I wouldn't drive 90 minute + just for the magsafe charging puck.
Edit: Not to mention Apple store near me that is walking distance is actually temporarily closed due to Covid-19.

I was a part of several Where’s My Refund on Facebook and the same question was asked everyday, several times a day. It got to the point I left the groups and tracked my refund and stimulus check by myself.
Meanwhile Apple & others must be mining lot of materials for iPhone, bringing them to factories and assembling them for us. I think after this Friday once we get our less desirable iPhones we get little relaxed. We will be able to play with something similar to our desired iPhones which are Pro Max and Mini. It's possible people will change their mind about mini if the iPhone they get on Friday is suitable for them.
In that case, probably not. Your Apple Watch backup is a part of your iPhone backup (whether on your computer or in iCloud). I don't think you can separate the two.
So have all or most of you received notice that your iPhone has shipped. I received a confirmation of the order with the delivery date of 10-23. They charged my account on 10-19 but it is still showing as preparing to ship. Hmmm...
for those asking about the watch, i think you have to pair with new phone as opposed to unpairing from current phone in order for new watch not to be wiped.

So I broke down after seeing the camera reviews this morning and realized since I keep a phone for at least 3 or 4 years that I need the third camera and low light selfies. So while I still am waiting for my regular 12 to ship (and will return once it does) I ordered a 12 pro in blue with 256 gigs. Says it will ship in 2-3 weeks. Sigh. Still, coming from an iPhone 6S+ I've had since launch week, what's a few more weeks?

I have not received anything from Apple indicating the phone has shipped, but I already have tracking through UPS My Choice and it will be here Friday

I know I will be getting the phone Friday because of ups my choice, I have the tracking and everything but when I look at the Apple store it still says preparing to ship as well.

Thanks! I checked MyChoice and see mine in Alaska scheduled for delivery on Friday. Evidently, Apple’s website is behind.

@Think creative - if the camera was your breaking point - why not go all the way for the 12 Pro Max with the better telephoto and optical image stabilization? I really wanted that camera myself, but the Max size is just too big for my uses. Just saying...i know it's yet another $100+ price jump again.
