This is my 3rd year going for pickup on launch day at 8am and I get nervous but still trust that it won’t encounter any delays, but when I had the actual shipping info I’d be like.. “is it gonna make it??” 😂
I know! One year, I knew I was going to be in Chicago on the 'day of availability', and took the chance and ordered TWO iPhones. I had to order them separately, two transactions, but they both went through. Odd that I only got a 'ready to be picked up' notice for one of them. So after a boring morning of 'yadda yadda' meetings, I trudged down the miracle mile to the Apple Store, and was surprised to get both iPhones. There were at least 50 people lined up waiting out the door and around the corner. I felt a little guilty, walking in to claim my booty. I browsed around a little, to give the iPhone gods time to arrange for them to be there.
Then a minion asked if he could help. 'I'm here to pick up an iPhone', Oh, right this way, and no one was waiting (for walk-in pickup). They asked for my name, and credit card (they were paid on that card), and was given two little bags. I combined them into one, and gave one bag back. I browsed around a little more, and bought a power brick on my Apple app, and walked out. I had a guy following me out of the Apple store. I kept seeing him out of the corner of my eye, and I kept to the storefronts and the bag to the store side, and I eventually lost him. Well, either that, or it was the guilt over seeing so many people (I swear it was even more people by the time I left) waiting for their chance to choose what was left in stock.
I got to the hotel, and started the conversion process, and almost immediately cursed that I didn't back up, initialize, and restore at least my iPhone while I was there. It took me at least three times to get a backup of my original iPhone, and I couldn't get it to restore. DOH!!! I went back to the Apple Store, and didn't see anyone waiting, it was later in the day (All stock had been claimed). I was able to get a full backup to iCloud, but ran out of time to get the restore done. I left with an iPhone with no address book, or even logged in to iCloud. I felt guilty for the people that were trying to contact me during that trip, but no one did. (Be careful. May you find yourself easy to live without too!)
So, after all this Chardonnay fueled verbosity, order your iPhone for store pickup. Back it up before you leave, or make a point to 'browse' while you are backing it up on their wifi. Get the new object of worship, initialize it, enable it, and do 'the restore dance' before you leave. Block a few hours, and maybe pack a lunch/snack. And walk past the waiting people, with your new booty safe in a pocket. A new working iPhone...
