If a phone like this got tapped by the NSA, nobody would be accusing the manufacturer for helping them

People in their bedrooms could do these kind of hacks to someones iPhone without any help at all. I'd guess the NSA have figured out how to do it at some point too, without any help from Apple

I'm pretty sure hiding your bank account from trolls on an online forum is a little different, given the opportunity for theft/ID theft.

He's talking about a little less sensitive information that doesn't give someone the opportunity to steal from you.

I don't defend the NSAs actions, they are scum and apparently the only entity allowed to break our laws without having to answer for them. But at the same time, I'm not really losing any sleep over it, because frankly there's nothing really interesting for them to find out about me, I'm just some schmuck living an honest life.

Is it creepy and totally appalling? Yes. Is it the same as handing bank account information to irresponsible strangers on the internet who would steal from you in a heartbeat? No, not really. I doubt that's the NSAs purpose of spying.

Boy are you misinformed.

If you've got nothing to hide, what's the problem? This day and age, what's wrong with eyes and ears?

What is your full name, address, DoB, driver's license number, SS number? What are the names of all of your family members? What are their bank account numbers? Where do they work? How many times have you lied to your parents? How many times has your spouse broken traffic laws?

If you have nothing to hide, why not just tell us?

It doesn't mean you are hiding things just because you don't want people you don't even know, to know everything about you. I am a regular person who obeys the laws of my country and having a hard time understanding why they do not have to.

Those things I wouldn't post online. If you did, then you deserve all that's coming to you. What's your point exactly?

Show me proof this data will not be used for shady activities. Show me proof that they will not abuse the data they get.

For crying out loud we KNOW they have been spying on their spouses, family members, and people they wanted to date.

Post what I asked for or admit that "If you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to fear" is a load of crap.

Everyone has secrets, things that are not illegal, but should just remain secrets.

Forget the obvious 'medical records credit history etc...'... Maybe you are working on the next big iPhone app, the next Harry Potter, do you want all that exposed?

And how does that relate to the NSA installing spyware on your iPhone?

This article is about the NSA spying of Apple products, not the NSA altering financial institutions. Which is what my comment was directed towards.

My point still stands. Arguing "well why don't you post your bank account if you've got nothing to hide" is different from someone not being as concerned as you are about the NSA collecting location/camera/etc information from my iPhone. The NSA has all my bank account information already and they have yet to steal from me, but if I posted my bank account here online you can guarantee my account will get wiped out in less than a day. So forgive me if I'm a little less concerned with the NSA having that information instead of you.

You're misinterpreting me though. I'd prefer if NO ONE had this information from me. But if I had to choose between letting them see it or you, I'd probably pick them.

I wouldn't post those things to anyone. Therefore I have no need to whine about what others may be doing with my non-existent information. If you've posted that kind of stuff online, then it's your own fault. I can't get huffy about hypotheticals on the Internet.

Honestly getting sick of all the lying. Clearly one side is lying. I somehow doubt the leaked documents are lies.

I love Apple but come on...

Come on, 2008. That was the original iPhone and iPhone 3G. Those did not have encryption enabled, and had all kinds of holes.

Why does both side have to lie? It's not a binary, black or white world out there. Or to paraphrase Jobs, they don't have to lose for us to win.

Fear mongering much?

The government isn't going in and changing our bank accounts - but they have and will continue to freeze bank (and other) assets of people and groups who support terrorists.

You can disagree with their doing so and you can suggest that if they do it to suspected terrorists, what's going to stop them from doing it to your account, but that is again, just plain fear mongering. Our government isn't out there trying to take our guns and money and medical records and food purchase behaviors so they can keep we, the unimportant denizens of the USA DOWN. They already take our money and use it in ways we would all consider wasteful and theft, but that is how our tax system works.

If you have potentially sent money to a cause that is a bit sketchy, you should worry. Otherwise, the likelihood that you're going to be targeted by the NSA or any other agency is about as slim as getting hit by lightning, maybe more so.

You wouldn't post those things online. But that's not the point. The NSA can get that info whether or not you want it made available. The fact that you wouldn't post it online shows that you do want it private.

The NSA is clearly not respecting that.

So if I have nothing to hide, I must give you a transcript of everything I say?

What the hell is wrong with you?

Excuse me, but if you have nothing to hide, why aren't you sharing it?

Oh right, because your argument is absurd.
