If Apple is keeping the iPhone 14 (starting at $599 for 128GB) and 14 Plus (starting at $699 for 128GB) around, what does that mean for the iPhone SE 4?

Rumors suggest a 6.1 inch OLED display, A18 chip, 8GB RAM, 128GB storage, sub $500 price... Why buy an iPhone 14 or 14 Plus? The same goes for the iPhone 15 (starting at $699 for 128GB) and 15 Plus (starting at $799 for 128GB).

It doesn't make sense for Apple to give the iPhone SE 4 all that capability to run Apple Intelligence when the iPhone 14 and 15 cannot and at a lower price point.
Because that's just a rumour, we heard things like Apple dropping the 128GB iPhone 16 Pro, that did not happen.

Apple introducing new iPad Mini, didn't happen.

Apple adding a 2TB option for Pros, didn't happen.

A hand of rumors were wrong.

On the other hand, it doesn't make any sense for Apple to discontinue the 14/15 right now, if they end up releasing an SE with support for Apple Intelligence, then, they'll drop those phones.

Wait, really? I had read that it didn't. Apologies if I got this wrong.

Looks like the regular iPhone 16 still doesn’t have AOD?

I figure it’d have StandBy and you would have to ‘tap’ to wake the screen?

They had to kill the 15 Pro because there's no reason to buy the 16 Pro otherwise.

Also the SE. C'mon kill it already.

They've properly cornered themselves.
I use the iPhone SE as my main phone, because it's the only iPhone that doesn't cause pain in my hands/wrists. I have a 15 Pro that I sometimes bring with me when I want a good camera.

I think Apple should make small phones, big phones, and an awesome standalone camera for the folks who have a small phone or want the best camera.

Thanks. Yes, I checked with Apple and they confirmed that the iPhone 16 does NOT have always-on display, so my original post was correct after all. Appreciate you providing this comparison.
Oops. Sorry for the wrong info, I was checking the comparison table too and I really think it showed it had AOD 😅

You can still buy the 15’s through carriers for quite some time though. In the grand scheme do many people actually buy their iPhone directly from Apple? I never have and not met anybody who does personally. It’s mostly carrier contracts in the UK.

If the regular iPhone 16 had an always-on display, I'd buy one. Nothing in the Pro offering looks compelling to me as a regular user (and I like the non-pro colors and form factor better) so this looks like another non-upgrade year for me.
Yep. And Apple know this hence why they didn’t implement it. Else I would have also considered it.

No worries -- I was hoping you were right, and would have "upgraded" from my 14 Pro to the non-pro 16 (I need USB-C more than I need the third camera lens or ProMotion). But I use always-on constantly (glancing at my phone during meetings).

When will ProMotion hit the non-pro line? Our best options are sub 16 PROs on eBay

I'm not in any way an expert on Apple's product development plans, but if I had to guess, I would say that it and always-on come to the non-pro model next year. Otherwise, it seems like the non-pro path would be seen as having stalled.

Next year at this time the 16 pro will be discontinued
So what’s new? iPhone Pro models have a sales lifespan of one year for the past 4+ years. Apple never lets you buy last years Pro iPhone model as soon as this years iphone Pro model becomes available. But that’s still not the same as your phone stops operating after one year.

How long do they keep models for AppleCare replacement?
5yrs from the last time they sold them new (that's when they become 'vintage'). As stock lasts, parts (including full-unit-swaps) will still be available. 7yrs from the last date of sale, they will no longer offer service of any kind (aka 'obsolete').

you could but why would you?

wait 7 days and you can have a better one for the same money...

that's a no brainer isnt it?
I wouldn’t. It was just the point about a new phone being about to be released and how long Apple sells the “old” one for before they push people toward the 16 series

the carriers here like to trap the unwary.
i've had friends buy a new phone two weeks before a new release.
their fault for not knowing but geez a salesperson should have to tell them too...

Optus were pushing social media ads for 15s the week before the 16.
Least some of us posted warnings to people not have known ;)

The iPhone SE remains as Apple's most affordable device
And for those in US, iPhone SE is now THE ONLY iPhone with Sim Card tray now that iPhone 13 is discontinued.

And once next gen iPhone SE comes out in spring alongside new iPad Pros and iPad Airs, US all be the first country where all iPhones are ESIM ONLY, which is going to make travel a bit hard (since some country like Japan DO NOT OFFER esim with voice plans to tourists due to strict laws on scam calls)

(I just finally watched Apple event and catching up on Apple news after avoiding it for three months so apologies for weird reply post here)

Yeah, the SE3 is quite unique, with its combination of a compact and robust body and the still powerful A15+4GB of RAM. And for people who travels, it also offers a SIM Card tray.

But not only that. It’s “dated” design offers an easy access for the elderly ones, thanks to the home button.

I’m not old nor do I love the presence of a home button, but I’m definitely in love with this form factor and I’m really happy that Apple pushed it one last iteration with the A15.

All of you that need a smartphone with a SIM card tray: go grab one while you can!

The next iPhone SE was originally going to have the iPhone mini form factor to keep the device small and compact. Unfortunately they were never able to solve the battery drain issue that plagued the mini and ultimately scrapped it in favor of standard iPhone design with Face ID.

Apple may revisit the mini form factor once the battery issues are resolved.

I’ve never read those theories in any trustable rumor or leak. It was the numerous comments of people arguing that the mini was destined to be the next SE, and maybe they thought that if they repeated the same story a thousand times, it would become true, but I highly doubt that was Apple’s plan. Manufacturing a small device such as the mini and designing a logic board only for a device with poor sales, just wasn’t feasible.

But yeah, mini fans were convinced that an expensive to manufacture device like the mini was going to be the next SE, when the concept of iPhone SE (Special Edition) revolves around a form factor that has sold lots of units and can be reused for a entry level device.

Don’t get me wrong. I would have loved a mini sized SE with the A18 and 8GB of RAM. I would be first in line to buy it. But I know that’s not going to happen, for many reasons. I guess the market is now for those who use the smartphone with two hands…
