I think they have dropped the ball on it, if Samsung can put a 10x into their phone I’m sure Apple can. Google will be holding an event on the 4th October, I’m guessing they will even beat Apple to it. It’s like Apple don’t see competition, only themselves. This is coming from an Apple fan, I just think Apple need to do more.

They seem to hear it but only when it gets so egregious even they have to admit it’s not working, like autocorrect. Anything that’s not an obvious abject failure they will take their sweet time getting around to. And sometimes even then.

It would have been better to provide the real explanation, whatever it is. If 5X is somehow the magical cut-off point for usability, the phone could have a user-selectable limit on the zoom function.

Also, unless you want to carry a phone the size of a cafeteria tray around, Apple has made the whole discussion irrelevant. Wake us up when Apple decides to issue a new phone for men, or at least men who don't carry purses or wear cargo shorts every day all day.

That means that a faster shutter speed is all that is needed.

Maybe they should figure out a faster digital shutter, since that is evidently the limitation here.
Faster shutter also = less light. In optics, this has always been the tradeoff. We have taken leaps compensating for this with computational photography, but that can only go so far to offset the actual physical limitations of the aperture necessary to achieve a given focal length in a fixed-space package (limiting the distance possible between lens and sensor while also limiting the size of the sensor itself).

I do not have shaky hands, and the S23 Ultra 10x Zoom works great. With that said, Samsung is getting rid of 10x too, so that sucks.

With mobile carriers moving to 3 year contracts I am completely down for Apple increasing the iPhone price by a few hundred dollars but at least giving us more technology and not little bites at a time.
You might well be down for it, but the many who understand they are already paying through the nose so Apple can continue to announce huge profit and growth returns definitely are not.

If 5X is the limit of Apple's technology, it's time to bump up the camera from 48 megapixels to 96 megapixels.

Apple's strategy is to hold onto some innovation and each year release a few just to drum up hype for next year. By doing so it will give time for the tech to mature.

Samsung on the other hand will release new ideas and "hope" that they work. They will also let the consumer try out new tech and "test" them. If they don't work, they will remove them for the following year.

There are good and bad for this and it will depend on the customer base.

From a practicality standpoint I’d rather have fixed 5x than fixed 10x. If I were a betting man, I’d put money them switching to a 48mp sensor and keeping the existing tetraprism, which would give the option to go up from 5 to 10x without sacrificing too much on image quality.

Apple can, but there are tradeoffs. Samsung needs a higher aperture, which increases noise. Remember Apple typically doesn't lead in raw specs (SoCs are a different story).

„with the iPhone 15 Pro remaining limited to 3x optical zoom.“ Again the reader should think that we have a zoom lens here.

We’ve already had feature length films shot on iPhone. Apple have been calling the iPhone Pro “studio” quality camera for years. Why not assume some of us are using tripods? With the prices we are obviously willing to pay for iPhone Pro why not give us 10x in “tripod mode” or whatever. Maybe an Ultra iPhone really is needed to seperate the professional men from the boys.

I don’t know if anyone said it but:

Maybe the limitation is due to patent issues with other manufacturers…

Big zoom range is the field of superzoom bridge cameras. It’s impossible to have great zoom with any smartphone.

Feature development roadmap. Why push the envelope when they can release it next year at the same time for the same price.

I would be more curious to find out why 5x zoom is limited to the iPhone 15 Pro Max :D

Because tech products with more features and/or better performance cost more money than tech products with less features and performance. An example of that is the 15 Pro Max.

I'll never understand why many people don't understand that as that's the way it is with most things in life. For example... a 75" TV costs more than a 40" TV.
