I used to upgrade my iPad every cycle, but the prices are now approaching laptop range, and I don't upgrade my laptop every year. So I maxed out a 2021 12.9, and won't be upgrading every year anymore, unless something exceptional comes out. No more incrementals.

Why did you upgrade that often? I have an iPad Air and a 2018 Pro 12.9. I still use the Air.

Buy a machine and use it. Buying every year is nuts.

For 11” iPad Pro 1tb (to get 16gb ram)
WiFi+cellular
Applecare

no case
No keyboard
No pencil

Just because you have lost your mind doesn’t mean I have...seriously who would pay that price?
We get it…you’re broke….move on. Just because it doesn’t make sense to you, doesn’t mean it doesn’t make sense to other people. You sound like a child crying over a price of a product. No one is forcing it down your throat. Life goes on. Wait for iPad Pro 26. Maybe it will be cheaper by then.

If you need to think about justifications to get it, you can’t afford it. Also I don’t think there is any need to justify the purchase by “you make how much money out of the machine”. It’s rather pointless.

People, and it seems there are quite a few, who see this as a good value proposition.

It sounds like you want this, but you don't actually want to pay for it. Or maybe you can't?

There are plenty of things I would like but can't afford.

Not once have I posted about it on the interwebs.

Cheers.

Who will pay? Those that want the Pro model with Cellular, Apple Care & 1TB.

I don't really see what your point is. You spec an expensive item with some expensive extras then seem surprised that it's expensive?

If you want the cheaper option the iPad Air is more than good enough for the mid-tier. In fact the iPad Air probably offers the best value for money out of any iPad right now.

I want a Lamborghini, it’s no fair they cost so much!

That's actually a great analogy. Just like a Lambo is a ridiculously overpowered and overpriced car for what you can ACTUALLY use it for, so is a 16GB RAM phone OS 'iPad Pro' which is heavier and more expensive (with it's 'Magic') keyboard than an equally equipped Macbook Air is (which, with a real multitasking OS, can actually use 16GB of RAM).

Actually, this is a fantastic config.

The only people that “Need not local storage are those that do photo/video editing for a living.

Otherwise it’s just a “want”. This happens every cycle and it’s a GOOD thing.

This means more people are looking to ditch laptops for iPads. It’s truly not their fault as it’s just so engrained in us to max things out.

iOS/iPad OS and it’s apps just don’t require the same level of local storage. We also don’t have to worry if it’s a i3,i5,i7,i9 - what graphics it has - battery life - heat… blah blah blah…

It’s the same across the line. 16gb is not important unless you specifically need it. Take a look at the M1 8GB MBPs. The have no problems zipping trough FCP or other taxing applications.

I think once people realize just what 8GB in an iPad can do, 16gb… for the next few years will just be absurd for all but it’s fringe users.

Apple will charge what people are willing to pay. It seems as simple as that to me.

I wish Android was more of a player, and I hope it does catch up. Competition is good for everyone.

I left the Windows market in 2013 after some 25 years of Microsoft OS computers. I pay more for Apple MBPs, but I have fewer problems. When I have to replace on, I buy the previous year’s model.

I’m still using my 10.5” 256GB iPP, but am replacing it with a discounted 2020 12.9” 128GB ordered from Costco. I’ve never bought the lowest tier storage on any Apple device, but when I saw that I’m using only 61GB on my 10.5, I decided not to pay the Apple charge for extra storage. Apple has the right to charge what they want to charge, and I have the choice of buying what I’m willing to pay.

Your boss would be saying the same thing about your salary ?

Kidding aside, it is expensive, no doubt about it. But that’s Apple. A chunk of what you’re paying is also for the Apple brand and your “believe” in it. Just like you’re paying more for a BMW vs a Kia.

I’m old enough to remember in the 80s a Mac cost about 2k. About 6k in today’s dollars. Yeah I know, different time then and computers were more of a luxury than the necessity that they are now.

Apple always have bad their “tax”. I mean this company charges 35 bucks for a keychain. 300 for the magic keyboard is really overpriced too.

So no shock that unit you selected cost this much. iPads for me are more of that luxury category, especially a 1tb cell model.

I mean its Apple

Yeah, I mean if the price is high, you probably don't need it. The iPad pro isn't meant for everyone. Its aimed at pro users people that need that kinda power. Also cellular isn't mandatory, just get it without cellular, that alone takes 300 off I believe. I assume you maybe have a phone, you could just use the internet connection from that. The stand and wheels thing is a little extreme but your right .

Most people do not need 16gb of ram or that much storage. If you’re a pro user that demands that kind of hardware, it’s available for you…at a cost. Like other professional hardware equipment. Also, Apple.

The large unanswered question is all around what the story will be with iPadOS 15. It is the dividing line between it being insanely priced or pretty compelling...

For instance, if it could allow a mobile professional to flip their equation a bit and go iMac/Mac mini + iPad instead of trying to do the same with a MacBook that could be a pretty compelling valuation story. Right now, iPadOS is so limited it is very hard to see the value of an iPad with 16GB of RAM. There are an extremely small number of workflows that the iPad allows with its current limitations that could even approach that limit.

Lol, this is also what I buy the iPad Pro 12.9 for but even back in 2011 (when I first bought an iPad 2), I've already been wishing for 500GB-1TB of storage. Had an expensive stint trying out Android and Windows alternatives before finally deciding I'm better off paying Apple's storage tax.

Getting the 1TB model this time around. :D

True, thus the niche pricing as well, with most people would just get the base model, and majority of consumers will just opt for the cheaper iPad Air (same look, in colors, and cheaper).

I think it's somewhat funny that just because Apple made a high end option expensive, some people think it's what they want, and then complain about the price. :D
