Yup - last night at around 7pm PDT. Had to reset on all devices. Haven't dug into the App-specific passwords yet. Wife's ID remained fine.

Another week, another Apple service fault. Really REALLY not good enough. And if they have been hacked again then they have an obligation to inform their customers.

At this point Apple is getting a reputation for poor reliability across its services. People will start looking at alternatives.

I'm not sure that they ever really had a good reputation, it's just that the bad stuff was able to be swept under the rug long enough ago that most people weren't aware of it. But between iTools, mobile.me, .mac, and god only knows what other various names they've used, iCloud is really the only one that's stuck around, but it too is hardly reliable.

Affected here as well, Mac.com address, started last night here in the US. Still giving me issues, just discovered all my app-specific passwords are gone and I can't set up new ones. Going to sit tight and wait until there's more info. Kind of glad it's not just me...but still.

Same here: i usually log in with [myname]@mac.com but ocassionally use [myname]@me.com or [myname].icloud --- all three normally work fine interchangeably.
This morning, Swedish time, I was first told to enter my appleId password, but after trying to do so I was instead told to reset it. As for everyone else, this caused issues with app-specific passwords too.
Affected my main MacBook Pro, but not phone or ipad (except for ripple effects after resetting password). (Also, this could not be ignored: icloud mail and imessage would neither send nor recieve.)

I believe my Mac has been nagging me about installing some update the last couple of days, so I assumed this was a poor result of some nightly I-never-asked-you-to-do-that-thanks spontaneous Sonoma update?

Regardless, very scary, unconvenient, and unreliable. I actually don't remember how I finally made it into the appleId site, but I know it took numerous redirected rejections before I got things up and running. Let's not do that again.

Could it be Beta users? All those around me are fine and not Beta users, I am, and spent forever resetting everything......

This kind of thing used to happen to me a lot several years ago, when I was using a different ID, and my ID was getting attacked over and over. It triggered Apple Servers to do what is happening to people here. I wouldn't be surprised if the same of thing is happening now. It could also be a simple server side problem with Apple.

I get that people don't being inconvenienced but, the real focus should be your account is still secure.

Just a small tip, you don't need separate ASPs for each app. You can use one for all third party apps.

Between this and the trade in iPhones not being returned emails just recently, just what the hell is going on over there latley.

I got logged out of everything last night, .mac account, head of Family... A bit of a nightmare, as it happened on six (6) computers, two (2) AppleTV's and an iPhone.. Noted, it took a couple minutes after resetting the password, before it actually worked, and had to generate new app-specific passwords for apps that needed them. Not fun and kind of scary!

I didn’t have issues with AppleTV …yet.. but everything else , including the watch that stopped receiving messages
So I had to reset iMessage 🤬too. This morning still working to update passwords in Settings : it saved in some places but not all.
I reused One of the generate password for my app and worked without the need to create a new one, I was surprised

It worked last night, probably it something that went through by mistake at Apple 🫨.
This morning I had to create one as well
and Apple TV needed an update as well

This is what happens when you trust one company with your entire “ecosystem” - you get locked out of everything temporarily without explanation.

Yup. Life Invader accounts are single point of failure catastrophes in waiting. I only have a couple extra steps to take in order to be fully ready for the worst case. Namely a robust non-Apple email setup and a 3rd party multi-platform password manager. No personal data (files or photos) in any cloud storage system. Sooner or later people are gonna rue the day they entrusted [insert your provider here] MegaCorp Inc. with their entire life.

They wont talk about it until they get sued. Typical apple behavior thats how they operate. The issue isnt even showing up on the system status page. Show that proves they know about it and theyre indeed refusing to talk about it
It’s obvious from the comments in this post that users have experienced Apple account sign-in problems. However, these reports are a minuscule fraction of the Apple device / services user base .. and does not support reflexive conclusions of a widespread outage that warrants a public statement or status down indication on the Apple Systems status page — simply because some users are experiencing problems.

In other words, billion user scale systems (or any rationally designed and managed system for that matter) are not designed for perfect performance or 100% availability as that is impractical and economically infeasible. So, the system status indicator is not going to change until service degradation exceeds a designed threshold which is calibrated to ensure a high degree of overall customer satisfaction. So that is why the system status page shows all green — not because Apple is hiding something or any of the other cynical reasons being thrown around by some in this thread.

Check Down Detector if you are interested in an independent, user reporting-based objective indication of the potential scale of the problem and whether there is a widespread problem with Apple systems. It’s obviously not perfect, but it is another independent source.

Spoiler alert: According to Down Detector “User reports indicate no current problems at Apple” across every reported system. Of course that doesn’t mean there are no users experiencing issues, but it is an indication that there does not appear to be the kind of major issue and coverup that is being assumed by some.

This happened to me yesterday evening exactly as described. Had to reset my password, reboot all my devices, re-generate all my app-specific passwords. It was super annoying. Luckily I wasn’t traveling so I had access to all my iCloud devices.

My Apple ID is one of the old MobileMe ("@me.com") addresses. Wondering if it is something to do with this as my partner and other family members had no issue, but had iCloud accounts created much later on.

Can anyone else confirm if their affected Apple ID is a @me.com address?
When this is mentioned in the thread, might I trouble you to confirm that the meaning is that if your Apple ID itself uses an email address ending in @mac.com or @me.com you might be at risk. If the email part of our Apple ID uses an @gmail or other email address, you may not be at risk??? Many thanks.

Why am I paying the Apple premium again?
Apple has never promised perfection with their products and services. And what is being reported here is certainly not the 'norm'. It would be wise to wait for facts before castigating Apple using an impossible standard in your post.

Has your account been taken over due to the incident? If you haven''t suffered any actual damage, what is the problem?

How many users had Stolen Device protection ON?
I had it , the rest of my family relatives didn’t and didn’t have the issue
Just a coincidence or this is why it happened?
I have Stolen Device Protection turned on and experienced zero issues across 10 devices logged in and using the same account. And no reports from 16+ direct family members or numerous friends using iPhones.

Apple has never been able to get services right. Why? One only has to look at Apple's poor error handling in both objective-c and swift. This along with poorly designed APIs lead to Apple's mess with daemons. They often just quit talking to each other, they don't report any errors, are not easily restarted, data is cached to death (otherwise Apple devices don't perform well), etc.

After all Apple used to be the "It Just Works" company. Therefore, marketing puts pressure on software engineers to not confuse users by reported problems. An old example, iTunes importing CDs do not report track errors, you have to wait until you are listening to the track and start hearing garbage.

There is also the Apple API strategy that a lot error information probably posses a security hole. Another reason to not let users know what is going on.

After all, any problems with the OS Apple considers their exclusive domain, not the users, so they just keep users in the dark.

That's a knee jerk reaction to the simple observation, "At this point Apple is getting a reputation for poor reliability across its services. People will start looking at alternatives."

I'm certainly looking at alternatives to two minis, one in the stereo cabinet, and one as my server. They both go off support this fall as Monterey is the end of the line for them. They will both run Linux very nicely.

The Apple alternative is either to get a used M1 mini (the used 2018's are selling for more than the M1) or use Open Core to upgrade the OS despite Apple. Sonoma does not run well on a 2014 mini, but Ventura does.

So, my alternatives are; run Monetery unsupported and firewall off the internet (viable for the server, less so for the stereo cabinet, run Open Core with Ventura to gain another year for used Mini prices to drop, or switch to Linux.

Is Apple's ecosystem really worth very much? I have most of it turned off anyway, iCloud made a huge mess when I tried to use that. Is Apple offering anything I really need? I like the iPad, and the MacBook Air. Sidecar could be very useful, but it doesn't actually work unless I sign both machines in. They are connected by a cable, why would I need to sign in to anything? Apple's becoming too much like Microsoft; route all your data through our servers so we can sniff it.

The point is Apple hardware is still very nice, but their ecosystem is not all that enticing. And on the hardware front, the Beelink GTR7 Pro is an impressive package on the small desktop front, and Linux ultralight laptops are starting to show up. My desktop is already Linux because Apple was too stingy with USB ports until the Studio, and that is over priced for my needs.

There are plenty of alternatives. Even more so since I don't have an iPhone (nor Android.)
