They wont talk about it. They never do. Not until they get sued, they love hiding and pretending nothings wrong
Indeed. I think that is true because it is in their own self interests to do so. After all, they are selling trust and security in this case. It loses value if it breaks. I have wondered in the past how severe of a break or data breach Apple, Google, Meta, and all the other 'one sign on' providers could cover, or would attempt to cover, to protect the security proposition of their services.

After all... one key to unlock them all ultimately is a pretty weak security solution.

They wont talk about it until they get sued. Typical apple behavior thats how they operate. The issue isnt even showing up on the system status page. Show that proves they know about it and theyre indeed refusing to talk about it

Just a guess:

An automated response/counter-measure to some sort of hacking attempt against an Apple server.

If so, then it is better than bringing down the server or to allow the hacking to proceed

There are widespread reports of Apple users being locked out of their Apple ID overnight for no apparent reason, requiring a password reset before they can log in again.

apple-id-account.jpg

Users say the sudden inexplicable Apple ID sign-out is occurring across multiple devices. When they attempt to sign in again they are locked out of their account and asked to reset their password in order to regain access.

This has led to additional Apple ID issues for users with Stolen Device Protection enabled who are away from a trusted location, as well as any app-specific passwords previously set up in iCloud also being reset.

As noted by 9to5Mac, user reports about the problem began appearing on social media at around 8 p.m. Eastern Time and became increasingly prevalent into the early hours of the morning.

MacRumors staff members have also been affected by the service outage, which does not appear to have been picked up by Apple's own System Status webpage.

We have contacted Apple for comment and will update readers if we hear back. Have you been affected by the Apple ID issue? Let us know in the comments.

Another week, another Apple service fault. Really REALLY not good enough. And if they have been hacked again then they have an obligation to inform their customers.

At this point Apple is getting a reputation for poor reliability across its services. People will start looking at alternatives.

When was Apple hacked before?

3 times this week. I also use a few app specific passwords which got deleted.

Of course I have turned on 2FA a long time ago.

I guess bots trying to get into Apple user accounts can trigger this. A bot could try with passwords leaked earlier and try to check if I am using old passwords. When checking on Troy Hunt's haveibeenpwned it is clear that my passwords have been leaked by several companies in the past.

How many users had Stolen Device protection ON?
I had it , the rest of my family relatives didn’t and didn’t have the issue
Just a coincidence or this is why it happened?

I have SDP on and wasn't effected. I'm sure I'll hear about any issues since my entire family uses Apple devices

Happened for me too. I’m traveling with my iPad, phone, and MBP. I’ll have to wait until i return home to reset. This happened to me while traveling about 2 months ago as well, and when I got home, I was able to just log back in, no password reset necessary. Sounds like it will be different this time. Thank, Apple.

My Apple ID is one of the old MobileMe ("@me.com") addresses. Wondering if it is something to do with this as my partner and other family members had no issue, but had iCloud accounts created much later on.

Can anyone else confirm if their affected Apple ID is a @me.com address?
Mine is an @mac.com address and it’s happened to me as well. I’m the primary on a family account.

Why only one among several in our group with .me or .mac? No, it’s not that
And it’s not because of Stolen device protection ON, from what I’ve read. But I’m turning it off for now because if I was not home it could have been worse having to wait one more hour.
Apple should come out and explain why this s&$! happened.

My system extensions were disabled, too. I had to restart into Recovery Mode to re-enable them, and then once rebooted, had to do similar stuff in System Settings.

All good, but I really liked my old Apple ID password.

I updated earlier this year, to a complicated passphrase, with caps, numbers, & special characters, my App specific at the same time. I'm really hoping this doesn't happen to me. I'll be curious to hear what it was? Was it just those without 2auth on, that had passwords since way back? Can anyone confirm they had set a new password recently (two years) and it did happen?

This could very well be kind of telling though?
If you like a password, that's highly probable that it's not a secure passphrase.

It happened to me and I reset my password less than a year ago due to some odd event that I can’t even remember what it was but it was enough for me to set a weekly reminder to check in on my AppleID settings for any changes. So, yes, confirmed.

I have an @me.com and my account was locked this morning (UK). Weirdly my account has been locked at least twice a week for around 2 months now. This is the first time I’ve seen the notification on my phone. It usually only shows up when I log into iCloud.com. Apple where no help, asked me to change my password and ensure 2fa was on which it was. Changing password didn’t do anything. Pretty sure my appleid was being brute forced. They suggested changing my appleid but because my primary email address is also my apple id it’s not quite as straight forward as if it was an @gmail email address.

Pretty sure there has been an issue with a leak of some sort for at least 4-8 weeks now and no info from Apple.
