From my experience and opinion, I can tell you a high 1.something GHz quad core processor and a 3 GHz dual core processor are virtually the same performance wise, especially when the applications aren't optimized for multiple cores.
Plus there's the cost; $600. Too much. Add Apple Tax and that's at least $1000 for a processor that's not even worth $600 to begin with.
Like many others, I firmly believe Apple will have Nehalem in all computers with the introduction of Arrandale early next year.
so in your opinion the updated iMac = still no nehalem? count me out for consideration then. if there arent significant h/w upgrades the thing is going to be out of date in 12 months. (not 'out of date' as in 'hey other computers are faster', that seems to be a given w/ apple, but out of date as in probably not compatible with some modern applications! serious CPU & GPU upgrades are needed for the non-mac pro lines)
There will be no update before Arrandale... GPUs are already good in iMacs but CPUs are somehow outdated but Core 2 Duos are still used a lot compared to Nehalems..
Ill bet money that the iMac gets an update to i5. C2D has lived its course... The iMac needs to ditch the 9400M for its base though. Should have the GT120 as a base GPU.
I think I will wait until the next generation with the 32nM chips.
Do you mean Lynnfield, Arrandale or Clarkdale? All of them have Core i7 models...
Lynnfield which is already available is 95W desktop CPU, never gonna happen. Clarkdale is 73W desktop CPU, not gonna happen without bigger case. Arrandale is 35W laptop CPU so Apple will likely use it
I am talking i5, not i7. i5 is the middle model in the new line (i3, i5, i7 i9). Arrandale laptop version will most likely happen, I am hoping that Apple will do a iMac with a desktop CPU though, so they can make it upgradeable, like the Mac Pro.
Oh, sorry I meant Core i5Lynnfield, Arrandale and Clarkdale all have Core i5 models as well. I'd like to have desktop CPU as well but I can't see it happening
ahh gotcha. I hate intel's labeling system... too conusing (theres an Arrandale version for all of the i* processors..)
It would be nice to have the desktop version, i doubt it will happen in the next year or two, but it would be nice.. but a switch to i5 from C2D would be nice too...
Yes it is. I'll give you fast advice.
Arrandale - 32nm dual core laptop CPU, have both, Core i5 and i7 models (2 x i5 and 5 x i7)
Lynnfield - 45nm quad core desktop CPU, 2 x Core i7 and one Core i5
Clarkdale - 32nm dual core desktop CPU, 4 x i5 and 2 x i3
Taken from Wikipedia so not 100% accurate
I would like to see the new i7 mobile processors in the iMac, if HP and Dell can squeeze it in much smaller form factor laptops, I don't see why Apple couldn't do it with a desktop. It will be laughable if a Dell Studio is equipped with a better processor than the iMac. A better graphics card would be nice too.
I want to see Blu-Ray, not because I need it but it just makes sense. It's becoming the new standard and Apple can't run away from it forever.
I guess we're about half way to a new iMac release, so what would you like changed or improved in iMac 2010?
Here's my list:
- LED Backlit LCD Panels,
- 30" Model,
- Quad Core Processors,
- Faster Onboard nVidia Graphics,
- >1TB HD Options,
- Updated Mighty Mouse,
- Black keyed / backlit Keyboard,
- Aluminium Build - File the sharp edges.
That's my wishes please Mr![]()
Thankyou very much, bookmarked!
bmw on a stick...
As for 2010, a 30" iMac is a dream, although a new 30" ACD would be spot on. And I think its about time we shifted from white keys to black on keyboards. I doubt a re-design of the mighty mouse or even a black one for that matter.
- 2,66/2,93 GHz Intel Core i7 Quad-Core (Mobile Processor)
- 2 x 640GB or 2 x 1TB or option to 1 x 512 GB SSD
- NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 512MB (on standard model) or ATI Radeon HD 4870 512MB
- Blue ray
- 10.6.2
- 4/8GB up to 16 GB
(- Apple care for at least 2 years!)
- new wireless mighty mouse / wireless keyboard + num. 4 sure!

My store just got a new 16" Sony Vaio last week. 4GB, 320 GB and BD for $649. That's right, $350 less than a Macbook.![]()
+ 1.2GHz single core AMD Sempron and intergraded GPU, right?![]()
You're batting .500. Give the Dodgers a call.
2 Gigglehurtz and Intel 4500. I wish Apple had sumpin' at the $650 price point for me to sell
