So, an expensive phone with an expensive monthly tariff, no 3G, no MMS, no video camera, poor quality still camera. Who's going to buy it apart from a few Apple zealots.

Give me a Led Zeppelin ticket any day...

yeah, i guess thats not too bad, but i just figured they'd start out at $400US since they can buy it here or online and use it over there no???? Figured same price across the board, like buying oakle sunglasses anywhere.

No, Apple won't ship their US products to Europe or give them US prices on them. Customers in Europe have to buy from the Apple Online store for their country (or region? I don't know). Taxation is part of it. Maybe higher operating costs in Europe as well, I have no idea. The popular theory is evil, unfogivable greed, I think.

MMS is stupid, it's a carrier's way of charging you more money for something you should have already. You can email photos right from the iPhone. To me that's a bazillion times better, because it's free with your unlimited data plan.

3G is a waste of batteries. EDGE is good most of the time, and WiFi with 7000 free hot spots plus the potential for WAR Driving, what's to complain about that? That's a hell of a lot better than 3G IMO.

interesting tidbit on "unlimited" data plan from the CEO of o2:

"18 months contract. There is a limit: 1,400 internet pages per day would break the deal as part of fair usage agreement."

1400 seems like a lot!

MMS is actually very useful, in that it allows you to send images to other phones - something email won't do unless the person you are sending to has email set up on their phone.

3G isn't that bad on battery life - it was on early phones but modern ones are fine

This is a very telling comment:

Q: To Matthew, what do you have to do to get your network ready for the iPhone?

"We're investing in EDGE. As many people have noticed, hey I have EDGE! By launch we'll be north of 30% and build from there." Only 30% folks. It's important to remember that many parts of Europe doesn't use EDGE, they've often moved on to UMTS (i.e. 3G)!

Note 'They've often MOVED ON to UMTS. Pretty much admitting that EDGE is not as good as 3G.

but everytime youve hit refresh on the engadget page counts as 1. So i bet theres a few hundered gone there!

I would assume you would not want to keep refreshing a page like this on EDGE. You would do it on WiFi, and I doubt they will count WiFi usage against your 1400 pages. AT&T obviously doesn't (not that they have a limit anyhow, but it doesn't show up on your bill)

well, it is the next generation, it darn well better be. But come on, they're not kidding about WiFi being a LOT better than either.

The killer to it is not that it's better, it's that it's not very common in Europe. EDGE makes a ton of sense in the US, where it is much more common. If I were in Europe, I have to admit that I would be waiting on an iPhone till "later next year" when it gets 3G.

Yes, I agree that WiFi is much better. Be intesting to know what coverage Cloud has in the UK. Of course, if the coverage is that good, people won't want to be paying the monthly data charge...

well, it sounds like the "free" WiFi is part of the data package, which is interesting. I believe here in the US certain AT&T customers get complimentary access to AT&T WiFi hotspots, but it's not part of the phone's data plan the way it appears to be with O2.
