Photoshop CS2

Running on "Automatic" performance. No other program running.

Real sloooow

Don't have Photoshop v7, only v5.5. Ran test on G3/300 B/W, 384 MB RAM, OS 9.2.2, memory set at 100 MB. 19 mins 46 secs. Ouch that sucks. How about compared to a similar PC setup?

G4 667 1 Gig RAM Photoshop 7

5 min 10 seconds

Its funny to compare numbers...

a dual 2 G5 averaged around 50 seconds which is approximately 5.17 times faster than my computer. If you multiply pure numbers (I know it's flawed but bare with me) a dual 2 G5 would be equivalent to a 3.446 Ghz G4. Megahertz to megahertz I thought that I dual 2 would be closer to 6 times as fast rather than 5.

(Yes I did a pointless calculation. I'm looking at buying a new computer and I want to get the most for my money... :D)

Folding

G5 Dual 1.8
1.5GB Ram
Radeon 9800XT

At first I ran the test while folding. Result: 1min 23sec

Running Photoshop CS only: 52 sec

****, that IBM Thinkpad t42p is a nice laptop, almost 50% faster than the PB, far better video card, same price, high res display, but horrible!!!
PLEASE APPLE, make us a PB fast as that computer.
Am gonna try tomorrow on my PB and G5, now is 2 am...

PB G4 1.5ghz 17"
1Gb ram
80 GB 4.2k rpm HD

Tomorrow PMG5 D2.3ghz 4gb ram, raptor 10k rpm
and Athlon dual core....

latest ibook ; 1.5 g ram

2:37 according to "watch it" from versiontracker -- which was running while the 'book was at the job, so...

Dashboard was running & as well Finder.

Which makes me wonder if the RAM upgrade really does any much good? (entry #176 above -- if Voidness is to be believed -- was 5 secnds quicker!)

switching to OSX will make your G4 slower... but if you want to upgrade...
ram to 1,5GB (max) & add a SATA controller & WD raptor HD
the raptor will make read/write faster & the ram will help speed up Photoshop... and undo a little of the slowdown by OSX... I would reccomend OSX Panther... Tiger's Dashboard & Spotlight allso make it slower (yes I noticed that on my G5... )
if there is a need for speed... go G5...
1GB ram minimum, if you have the cash... get a raptor as bootdrive & to store work in progress... the other one as storage for older projects...
(I'm still saving to buy 2 raptors (Striped into RAID) for the G5 & transfer the one I have now to the G4 & add 3x500GB as FileServer...)

but since you're talking PowerBook I guess you want portability...

so for a Pb: don't be cheap when it comes to adding ram (Photoshop likes lots and lots of it) if you can go for a faster internal HD (at least 5200rpm or let someone build a 7200rpm drive in it...)

wauw... 2x0.7 faster proc and 0,5GB more ram makes a big 4sec difference (to my max settings)... makes me feel good with my G5 ;-) and glad I did choose the 1.8 over the 2ghz and spend the price difference on ram etc...

One minute and seven seconds seems pretty good.

Wow with all the G5 hype I was starting to doubt my G4 tower. Looks like its fast enough to get me to the Intel Macs ;)
