'bout time! I have been hoping for this for years. And thank goodness you can zoom in and out by scrolling too. Apple needs to fix that in the stand alone app as well.

they're restricting Firefox from the beta of the standalone.

Somewhat odd that AAPL is not fully-supporting FFX in the beta.

The DDG link posted by astang (above) works almost-as-well as if I were using AAPL Maps app.

I'm on my Studio 90% of the time, but it would be nice to avail of the tech when I am not, directly-so, from whichever OS I might be inhabiting.

Wish they’d put more resources into increasing points of interest/businesses. There have been so many times where Apple Maps doesn’t know about a business that has existed for years and when I go try Google Maps they have it.

Also wish it would stop giving me routes that require illegal u-turns.

And get rid of Yelp. I don’t care what a grocery store’s Yelp reviews are.

That's the first thing I noticed and the reason I rarely use Apple Maps is because I find zooming in and out by pinching awful.
Try this, in quick succession: tap once, then quickly tap again without lifting your finger. Now drag up/down and the map will zoom in/out. I find it a bit easier than bringing a second finger into the mix, myself.

as long as they are still using YELP, I won't use it
I think they made some kind of deal where Maps shows Yelp info for businesses, and in turn any tap on a photo or anything directs to the Yelp app/website. I always feel a bit bait-and-switched by that.

Apple Maps has, though, slowly been phasing in their own native rating system. No review, just thumbs up/down, and the ability to add photos. I usually don't come across very many ratings, but occasionally I'll hit on a place that seems to have been rated a fair bit -- usually someplace very busy. I don't find it terribly useful, though.

You're telling me a nearly $3 trillion company doesn't have the resources or employee talent to make their web-based map compatible with Firefox?

No he’s telling you that they’re just testing right now. Later in the testing or when they’re done testing and launch a final version they’ll most likely add support for firefox (and also for safari on iphone).

It is a shame really.

It is a beta so broken features are expected. So little reason not to support Firefox.

Disappointing to see Apple leveraging user agent browser blocking like it is 2008.

Even more disappointing that it works just fine in Firefox and on iPhones and others via DDG and has for many years. So they obviously support all of these.

It is a shame as their goal with this should be to make it as universal and easy to use as possible. That allows people to share Apple Maps links to people outside of the ecosystem via emails, texts, blogs, social media, etc. Allowing it to act as a draw to the ecosystem similar to how Google leverages Maps.

Especially considering how late they are launching this. Everyone thought this was coming 5 years ago when it got added to DDG.

Sometimes I wonder if Apple misses the forest for the trees.

100% agree with your sentiment here. They're located in Cupertino and have access to incredible web app dev talent + vision, yet they consistently under-deliver or never-deliver when it comes to pure web app products. A team of 10-20 of the best JS devs you can find could probably pump out absolutely incredible web products.

The irony is that Apple led the web industry into huge innovations like progressive web apps, then subsequently downplayed the entire thing. It's baffling to me.

I didn’t have this on my bingo card, but I’ll take it!

I think this may be a big step toward open maps up for crowdsourcing and creating their own POI database similar to Google’s which would be fantastic!
You are aware that OpekStreetMap exists (and it's used by Google and apple) and there are tools to easily add details to the map (crowdsourcing) like brilliant StreetComolete on android?

I would gladly help to make Apple maps better, so as many others. Unfortunately there is no option to report.
I have given up trying to make it better. The options are too limited, and mostly I get inane responses, even where I have provided full details and photos. The people reviewing the edits give no impression of caring.
