Nope! twice it's happened and the only other apps I've had open at all besides the Maps App were the Messages App and the Music App. I was listening to music and although I did have the Messages app in the background, I wasn't currently using it or getting texts from someone. Both times I was mid-drive home when it crashed, and wasn't doing anything like tapping Music and going back to Maps or swiping to different Home Screens.. Just driving with the Maps App up.
Are you on the iOS 15 beta?

I believe it would...I think we discussed this last year?

The ratio of the map to direction boxes, etc. doesn't change though. You can see this in dashboard mode. I don;t remember if we figured out the exact ratios, but the right side boxes are always 40% of the screen real estate while the map is 60%, or something like that.

And in full map mode, same thing...there is a set ratio for left hand boxes/info, right hand direction boxes, Map fills up the remainder. You are seeing more info horizontally in every section. Would be nice if the info boxes stayed the same and even more of the map was visible. But this makes programming sense considering all of the different screen sizes out there.

EDIT: I think dashboard is 60% map, 40% right hand boxes (icon list to the left is fairly fixed/consistent between screens). Full map mode is like 40% for boxes on left and 60% "map" showing. They basically just flip the position of the boxes, but you definitely see more in map mode since you get some view behind the boxes and the zoom level is slightly different?

60/40 by area or width?

Yes beta 7

There might be something to that.
My 12PM is on beta 7. During beta 6 I had an issue where while the screen directions were fine, the app went silent for about 1/3 of the trip (about 30 minutes) - beta 6. Earlier I did a drive and about 5 minutes in it did the same but was still silent at the trip destination - beta 7.

Wonder if something on the beta side is affecting?

Happy to report that highway shields have returned to the navigation map in the New York City area and suburbs.

Local road name bubbles are still intermittent.

It would appear that your car is a major determining factor in how well of a GPS connection you have on Apple CarPlay. Ever since I got into my new wheels, Apple Maps' icon showing my parking location has been FAR more accurate than it ever was in my old car.

Oh! Check this out. I went to review my local Carvel, and I’m no longer getting the detailed review options for food, atmosphere, etc. Only a basic thumbs up or thumbs down.

…Or do you only get the detailed questions if you voluntarily upload photos?

I've been waiting two years...ever since new maps came out for New York City...for them to fix the FDR Drive and Harlem River Drive. For some reason, they were drawn on the map as a secondary road (thinner line), rather than a highway, and the exits were all screwed up (non-existent in directions). While I haven't driven on it yet to see if the exits were fixed, as of today, the highways were redrawn with the appropriate thick lines for a limited-access highway.

I have to say, it's pretty fun having Google Maps on my Pixel and Apple Maps on my iPhone running side-by-side to the same destination. It's real easy to see some of the major differences. So far, they have both picked identical routes. ETA's while sometimes different haven't leaned one way or another (splits the difference when they are different).

YouTube channel created, equipment on order to make it easier to film CarPlay in the car...can't wait to make the first video!

I visited my friend today who has the iOS 15 beta, and we plugged his phone into my car so I could see the "somewhat" new Maps style on my CarPlay. It looked really sharp just scrolling around on the map. The audio quality of Siri speaking was somewhat poor. Not sure if that was an issue with the beta, or just because my friend's phone volume was set too loud.

So this is interesting…suddenly, the shields for County Roads are appearing on the maps in areas where they never appeared before. I think there was a glitch or something, where even though the road was properly associated with its County Road number, the shield wouldn’t appear on the map at all. (Except when navigating, the shield would appear in the directions box along with the name of the road.)

There were some places where County Road shields have always been present, but most were missing. Now they’re suddenly all here.

I think we’ve always had them in MI. And I like the way Apple gets rid of them once you zoom in far enough and instead shows the name of the road.

I’m still surprised Google has stick with the old paper maps symbols versus what people actually see on the road signs.

Well, those are State Route shields. I never had a problem with those. It was only the County Road shields that seemed to not want to show up for most areas.

Drove to work so I could check out the newly redrawn FDR Drive. The zoom level now behaves as it should on a highway, but the exits haven’t been fixed yet. Still better than it was. Even more interesting, is that Maps now refers to the southernmost portion of the highway as the South Street Viaduct, which is sort of its nickname down there.

Also throwing in some photos of my drive home, and the beautiful views.

Didn’t want to overload one post with too many photos. lol

Today, I decided to use Google Maps and Waze for the first time in my new car. Other than being in super-widescreen, no real differences to speak of. Google Maps on CarPlay has always had glitchy “exit” symbols in the directions box, and that interestingly manifests itself on the dashboard view as well.

Unfortunately, when you use Siri on CarPlay to take a screenshot of Google Maps or Waze, the top menu slides down before the picture is taken, which kind of ruins the shot.

I’ve also learned that using dashboard view is a detriment if the app tries to alert you to a faster route or a warning of something up ahead. It’ll speak out loud the diversion or warning, but if you want to see it or select it, you have to navigate back into the full screen app.

Note: In this photo, Google Maps found me a faster route, and was suggesting I take it. But the route overview is backwards. It’s marking my current route as the faster route, and the new route as the current route!

One thing I like about Waze is that it incorporates HOV lanes as separate roadways, and will direct you into them if you choose so in the options. Presumably, this allows Waze to judge speeds on the main highway and HOV lanes separately.

Up early and decided to do some county road research. Found a nice website showing the history of road signs in Michigan and what they look like then and now.

County roads DO show here, but it’s the opposite of State roads when zooming.

Street name shows normally, but county shields come up when zooming closer. It’s scary how much sense that makes. Hah. It’s also one of the big differences I’ll be pointing out in my Google versus Apple Maps video.

I tried to see if special shields might show, like National Forest Roads, but I guess even Apple Maps has its limits.

From my recent observations in the New York area, State Route symbols are the most prevalent, appearing even when zoomed way out. The actual name of the road (if it has one) appears when zooming in closer.

For County Roads, it seems to depend on the "class" of road. New Jersey and Long Island, for instance, have some larger secondary roads that are also designated as County Roads. (These roads, by themselves, would have thicker lines, and are usually represented with bold font for the road names.) On these roads, the County Road shield seems to follow the same rules as the State Route shield, appearing even when zoomed out far (but not quite as far as the State Route shields).

However, if it's a very small local road that happens to be a County Road, the shield only appears if you zoom in close enough to make the 3D buildings appear.

I’ve been running Google Maps on my Pixel (in view while I’m driving) and plugging my iPhone in to the car so I can view Maps right next to it on the CarPlay screen….just while I get used to Google on the phone.

What I should have been doing is just recording trips on both phones at the same time so I could edit later…but that’s what I’ll start doing.

Quick trip to Home Depot, Total Wine, Shell station, local grocery store and then home. Google Maps routing, while getting me to the first two locations, differed from Maps at the end (entrance choice). And then had a different way to leave the Shell station to get to the grocery store.

Apple Maps “won” on all three of these with the “best” way to get to the locations…less turning across a major road, proper route to not turn the wrong way out of the gas station (not allowed to turn left across a major road as Google suggested), and more.

LaGuardia Airport has been in a state of reconstruction for the past few years. Apple Maps seems to have the current road layout correct…but POIs are a little wonky.

This POI for the parking garage is in the correct location…but check out the arrival entry points! Two routes, with two completely different end points…and neither of them are anywhere near being correct. lol

I’d send in a correction, but I actually have no idea where the correct entrance is now. I’ll drive over there later to see. I’m prepping to pick up my fiancé there on Wednesday.
