I want to believe what Matthias petrat says

So if it would launch tomorrow, why is no one able to add a card or we have more shared T&C‘s?
I really hope for the launch, but I don’t think it’s happening tomorrow.

It's most definitely not going to happen tomorrow. With the exception of the U.S., Apple Pay has never been launched on a Monday.

It will probably like to forget the time difference. If Monday morning would start :apple: Pay, then :apple: would indeed pay its employees Sunday surcharge. :DThat's a no-go. So I'm typing on a start between the 13.11. and 20.11.

This guy is playing the guessing game as well... he keeps changing his mind every now and again.
How would you know?
He is deeply in the banking and payment szene and might have important contacts who could know details (other than you or me). And delays of the start of AP are well possible because of many reasons (like the old bank`s IT for example).

Yes, he knows more than the rest of us. Delay until the end of November most probably. I’m hoping they get Commerzbank on board until the .

I asked comdirect which type of cards they will support. This was their answer:

Seems that for now only bunq (or is there another bank?) will have maestro support for Apple Pay and no V-Pay for Germany.
I really hope that more and more maestro or even V-Pay cards will be supported as there are still a lot of places where only debit cards are accepted.

I don’t think, that vpay will be pushed into the market anymore. It is a not very much adopted scheme in a handful of european markets. And Visa presented their Visa debit card the last days in Switzerland.

It is questionable what MasterCard and Visa want anyway with maestro and vpay after they launched MC debit and Visa debit.

I think MasterCard and VISA could easily shut down VPay (less so Maestro) and push towards MasterCard / Visa Debit cards. That would render most Girocards useless. We'll see.

By the way, another FinTech insider has been adamant about tomorrow. Who know's who to believe. My common sense tells me that a Monday is highly unlikely anyway.

Maybe DB will offer Maestro support as they currently state that a checking account with them is sufficient to be able to use Apple Pay and the “Junges Konto” for example does not include the Debit Mastercard.

For consumers it doesn‘t really make a difference whether they pay with a MasterCard debit or maestro as both will instantly show up on your bank account. For the merchant on the other side it does make a difference.
Especially in Germany with a lot shops that only accept cash, debit cards could be a cheap way to start. Most people here pay with their girocard/maestro and if these cards could be added to Apple Pay, almost every customer of participating banks would already have a compatible card in their pocket.

It's a fallacy to think that because Girocard is used most, it's because customers "love" them. They're the standard issued debit cards in Germany and has been pushed into the market by the main banks - due to their self-interest. Most people don't think about it and mix up "EC Karte", "Girokarte", "Bankkarte" or even "Maestro". My local Sparkasse even hides the Girocard logo on the back and prints the Maestro logo right on the front. People would then just assume that's what it is, a pure Maestro card.

That's still the reason why people still connect Visa and MasterCard to credit cards. They're just schemes that also happen to provide credit cards service to issuing banks.

Also it's really annoying to have two cards per account, when in other countries you'll usually just receive one standard (MC/Visa) debit card which satisfies most customers needs.

Maestro has a certain amount of recognition (also because MasterCard pushed for dual MC/Maestro acceptance worldwide). But VPay will soon die a slow death. I also think that Visa will push for Debit cards and I could imagine banks like ING / DKB will use that system. Why? Cash via cashpoints is cheaper, international, more room for development (push, card control etc.). You can tell that Girocard isn't popular. ING only recommends using it for getting money from supermarkets, everything else via the VISA card. DKB is the same. Comdirect uses the Girocard/VPay card a lot within DE as it is connected to the Cash Group network, which makes business sense.

Getting cash only via merchants etc has some mayor issues... at least in Germany: shops are closed on sundays and mostly after 20:00.

Exactly, and that's why for all banks that don't have branches, MC / Visa are the much more attractive proposition ;)

By the way: My Amex app is telling me I can't log in. Same for you guys?

Nope. Login possible.

Cash withdrawal with MC seem to be quite expensive for the issuing bank. Otherwise banks like N26 would not have taken the ********* for kicking customers and limiting the actions per month.

The costs are regulated though. Girocard is also very expensive if the participating bank isn't in your network or there isn't an agreement in place.

Yep. Amex is back now for me... Weird.

But: I just got this in my bunq app. When I click on add to Apple Pay, it says "incorrect region" and a button with "tell me how to fix this".

ATMs are an expensive business case. Someone has to pay for it.

To get your customers some advantages, these networks have been build ;)

So I don’t see the advantage of MC/Visa for cash supply. At least at home.
