I wonder what defines which merchant can take payments above £30 via contactless / Apple Pay.

Good question.

I guess a long history of trading and card payment transactions would be amongst the list?
I don't think that comes into the equation, as very small businesses who use terminals like he Square one
can usually accept payments over £30. I think it is usually down to the terminal supplier and the merchant.

Did anyone experience issues this evening with Visa cards on Apple Pay (as per wider visa issue)? Mine seemed to work fine.

At around lunch time all the card machines stopped working at my work. So might be an issue not specific to visa.

Was around “the city” in the evening and many people’s VISA cards were still not working around 20:00 and possibly later. But my debit Card on Apple Pay worked fine and it said authorised really quickly. It made me wonder if only plastic cards doing “offline contactless” were effected but the decline message coming back were blocking people’s cards thereafter on the chip. Or I was just one of the lucky ones ! In any case never seen a Friday night so sparse, some bars almost empty

Cash is king, for everything else there is MasterCard.

Odd. I used my Nationwide Apple Pay on Thursday afternoon and it kept failing. Didn't try my card, but HSBC Visa Card payments went straight through :( I didn't think much of it at the time...

I tried Apple Pay at Asda around 6pm yesterday and it failed with 2 different cards, both of which were Mastercard.

I think the issues with Visa were killing Asda’s payment infrastructure even though MasterCard itself was meant to be unaffected.

I had to resort to a MasterCard chip and pin transaction to buy my tea.

More than likely. People trying their Visa credit/debit cards over & over probably swamped the systems; didn’t some shops resort to cash only even though the problems lay with Visa?

I think there were wider problems if shops used Visa’s card payment system for all cards.

I think high street stores with 1-2 checkouts will have stopped accepting all cards for a bit as it’s easier to just refuse cards than let some customers try and then annoy all the rest paying cash.

Supermarkets probably didn’t need to do this given the number of checkouts open, but my local store could have done with some better processes.

There was a generic tannoy mentioning difficulties paying but no mention that chip and pin was working better than contactless, or that getting cash out in the foyer would have been a good idea.

I tried it today at my local M&S Food Hall and didn’t need to enter my PIN (under £30). I activated the card beforehand via the online banking. Let’s hope the PIN doesn’t take too long to arrive...
Once I go over that £30 limit I always need to enter the PIN on the terminal with some shops (ie. Tesco), correct? Or is that something that’s decided by the banks? Sorry, but haven’t had my cards set up for Apple Pay before.
On a side note: When using Apple Pay in Germany I never need to enter a PIN when over 25€ (standard contactless card limit). Touch ID as authentication seems to be sufficient for their setup (even if it isn’t officially supported there yet).

Just as an FYI, I've been using ApplePay (and use it frequently, at least daily) since it launched and have never had to enter a PIN.

Yep never had to do that either. No idea why someone would need it.

Didn’t say one would. I was aware of the contactless limit but in Germany it works differently: you can go over 25€ with Apple Pay at any time or if you pay by card you need to enter your PIN. Hence my question :)

A valid question indeed, I think in the USA you sometimes have to enter your pin. I am not sure if that would even work in Europe, with the way Apple Pay and our PIN system work . I was completely unaware that I could use Apple Pay over the limit in Germany, will try it when I next go there,

Normally you have to use Chip & PIN on a new credit/debit card (unless it’s a replacement) before you can use contactless-you only have to enter a PIN using a physical card if the transaction is greater than £30.

If supported by the retailer you can spend over >£30 with Apple Pay but some banks (Lloyds, Halifax) restrict the amount you can spend.

I used Apple Pay three times today Sainsbury’s, Sainsbury’s petrol station and M@S. A total of about £100, but I got no notification and no transactions showing in Settings>Wallet. I have looked in the Lloyds bank app and it showed as pending in my account though. Any body else had this happen? A transaction I did six days ago showed up fine.

I popped into Tesco on my way home from work last night, and paid with Apple Pay. I didn't get the notification until about half an hour ago, but it had the correct transaction time on. Happens from time to time. I'm with Lloyds too.
