So does the way that Walgreens have their loyalty card set up with Apple Pay also compromise the security?

Almost certainly not.

To explain, the post I replied to thought it could be linked to a payment card to avoid barcode scanning. Ie every time I use my Halifax debit card, Tesco knows it's mine and knows my club card account is linked.

Apple Pay relies on tokenisation, which means a random string unique to that transaction. There is no relation to the card number or to the next token in the next transaction. As it is implemented, linking the two would be impossible and setting up some way of reverse engineering it would seriously undermine the security of the system.

I know Tesco (and other loyalty cards) use my shopping habits to build a profile around me (in terms of sending me personalised vouchers etc) and that's fine.

I'm not sure how Walgreen's have implemented their Rewards card into Wallet to use during Apple Pay but I imagine it's also based on tokenisation (something some of our loyalty cards could do with seeing as people have had their details compromised and had points fraudulently redeemed).

Im not sure whether they have that or not... but the point is it is its own discrete card and by the nature of Apple Pay couldn't be triggered by a payment card because of tokenisation - that payment card would have to be registered with the retailer too... It just can't work like @azing wanted it to.

You have to tap twice to use a loyalty card in Apple Pay once for the Loyalty Card and again for the Payment. - http://techcrunch.com/2015/11/05/wa...integrate-its-loyalty-program-with-apple-pay/

Not sure how well it would work in the UK, most loyalty card have switched to using Barcodes from Magstripes. The payment readers would need to be setup to accept a contactless loyalty card as well as a contactless payment cards. Boots could probably manage it, as they use a chip on their card and the standard chip and pin reader.

From said article:

It’s worth pointing out that Apple Pay is designed to allow for payment and loyalty information to be sent in a single tap, but it’s up the retailer how they want to configure this. Walgreens chose to make it a two-step process. We understand they did so that customers could see their savings and discounts register before they make their payment.

So it's possible to have your payment card/loyalty card processed in one step, rather than two...

I was just hoping for what Walgreens have, I just didn't know how it worked with privacy etc. but thanks for clearing it up!

I just want to ditch my wallet. One day...

You still could, maybe. It's just two separate taps.

I wonder if Barclays Bank will be ready for Apple Pay from tomorrow morning on the back of tonight's product announcements?

Even though I've been able to use it since July 14 last year there'll be some happy customers if they do...

Barclays aren't even getting involved with Android Pay either so I highly doubt they will be sorted by today/the 27th.

Aren't Barclays trying to do their own thing?

If you have certain Android phones they've baked in Contactless payments through their Barclaycard app or there's the bPay bands.

They keep telling customers on their Twitter feed they are excited about Apple Pay and it's coming "soon".

Doubt it'll be activated on the 27th seeing as that's Easter Sunday obviously.

So basically it's either Thursday 24th or after Easter, so then 29th onwards.

Who is betting on tomorrow? Not me!!

Barclays are still not supporting Apple Pay, I have not used their credit card since Apple Pay started in the UK.

Their Twitter feed keeps banging on about how "excited" they are and that it'll be available "shortly".

Was rumoured to be launching between March 12 and 27 (from an email someone received earlier on in the year).

I think Barclays lack of clarity / customer update on when they are going to release is disgraceful. If you look at Twitter 100's of people are asking @Barclays but they NEVER provide a reply. Not a good customer experience!

Hear, hear. It's the same boring spiel (rinse, repeat) and even the team using Twitter to reply must be fed up of being asked now.

Surely Barclays CTO ( Michael Harte ) is accountable for this cock-up. He leads their technology division and the lack of communication is disgraceful

It is disgraceful, I agree. Rather than confirming in an email earlier on in the year stating a timeframe (which gets people guessing when it might launch) they need to get off their high horse and enable the service.

Wish the shops would get the loyalty cards integrated into Apple Pay, like Walgreens and that. So annoying with the seperate cards. The Stocard app is a good idea but never works on the scanners in tescos or sainsburys

Given Walgreen's own the majority stake in Boots UK now you'd have thought they'd have followed suit with the Advantage Card over here and added it to the Wallet app.

I think the only time I've had any success with the Stocard app was at a Tesco Pay at Pump using one of the newer terminals.

Given the failure rate I ended up deleting the app.

Boots should have the easiest time doing that - it's always been chip in card based rather than barcode based, right? So they should have an easier time connecting through nfc in wallet. Caveat: if their nfc terminal provider supports it.

Well they use the Ingenico IPP355 terminal (or something like that, the same ones as most Sainsbury's and Asda) so will have to do some research.

My new Advantage card has a barcode rather than a Chip now though!

Used Apple Pay in subway today and the cashier was happy that it went through and everything. After I left I got a notification saying that it had been declined. Anyone else seen this before?

Lucky you, you got a free meal! I used Apple Pay (UK card) at Lidl (in Germany), it first went through as normal, but then within seconds I got the same error message, unfortunately that happened before I left the checkout, so I had to pay in cash. But from my experience, your transaction didn't go through and you won't get charged.
I also get the declined message every time I use Easy Pay with Apple Pay in an Apple Store, unfortunately without ever looking like it went through in the first place.

Subway was my 1st use of Apple pay via iPhone 6.

No declines since B.P.gargage/Subway/Tesco.

There's been a rare error message recently which requires a re swipe, usually show's cost via iPhone though transaction doesn't through, not sure if it's iPhone or terminal t.b.h
