My unintended solution for this problem I never imagined existed was this...

I got it because I tend to grip the Pencil tightly but a regular grip wouldn't allow for charging.

Seems to have prevented scratches as well. Perhaps this is an option for some?

You can get a replacement from this small scratch?

Mine also has a small little metal "blip" ? It scratched my ipad but it's not really bothering me, I just put a piece of tape over the full length of where the pencil sits on the ipad. No more issues.

Using an Otterbox 360 case.

Maybe I might look in to getting my iPad replaced since it has a bend in the middle. I've been super careful not to bend it after watching all the bending videos but eh.. no idea how it happened. I made sure never to put anything on it, never went in to a backpack, always hand carried. Sometimes I wonder why I go through so much trouble for a device.

I’ve had my iPP a while, use the pencil almost daily (and have it attached when not in use), and don’t have a single mark on my iPad or the pencil. I’m certainly not saying others haven’t had an issue, but I’m thinking it’s probably not widespread.

I don’t really know what was going on exactly but one day I noticed that there was a dot. I thought it was just a stain but when I try to erase it, it wont go away. So I ignored it. But them the scratches popped up....

my advice is that put a sticker on your apple pen, to prevent it scratching your ipad😭

While it's a good tip, I can't help but think that the $1300 I've spent on a tablet should really not require a tape to prevent damage... right?

hi.... I want to ask you how was the Apple reacted to this? Because I have the exact problem, I just bought my ipad for 4 weeks, and I noticed small magnetic like a dust permanently attached to my apple pencil. When I try to match them to the scratch on my ipad‘s edge, it matches exactly right on the spot. And when I place the pencil one way or another, it matches too... so my powerful guest that THIS SMALL MAGNETIC like a dust that is attached to my apple pencil causing the scratches 😭View attachment 872971View attachment 872972

Apple indicated initailly they would replace it. They suggested I go to Best Buy as it was the closest location. Best Buy "tech" was useless and deemed the issue completely cosmetic. I argued that the damage is caused by a product defect and such damage will certainly lower its resale value, a tangible loss. The answer was "If you feel this way then you'll need to talk to Apple."

I booked an appointment but had a meeting that came up and missed it. Then I was out of the country for two weeks. Now I'm back and looking to schedule another appointment. The grooves are really deep now.

In short, do not go to Best Buy... they are completely and utterly useless.

I like this cover. I'm getting one, too!

I think whenever we are looking at cosmetic damage we need to establish what can be considered wear and tear and what is a proper defect.

For now a lot what is shown here looks like purely cosmetic damages. That is to a degree to be expected when we attach a magnetic piece covered in plastic to a metal surface.

I disagree. Plastic should not scratch the metal. Maybe you don't realize just how deep the groves are. In my case, after just a couple of months, the grooves are down to the bare metal. There are two layers of paint by the way... so that's fun to learn, I guess.

Remember, Apple is not the first one to create a magnetically attached pencil solution. I have a surface with a surface pen. It does the same. It's probably two or three years old and has zero scratches from the pen.

This is a defect. Clearly unintended and, in my opinion, it has an impact on resale value.

This is not cosmetic. These tiny holes on Apple Pencil are showing up in the exact same position as others. I am super careful with my gear and the fact that others have the same markings in the same location is more than a little convenient.

Yep, I am also seeing these marks, but not as prominent as some of the pictures

Definitely there though and appearing slowly, I think if I used my pencil more and snapped it back the patches would just get worse

Does the pencil stop working or break into pieces? Until that happens we are looking at cosmetic damages. Damages nonetheless and based on a bad design of course.

Cosmetic damage’ implies something that’s avoidable. Clearly, Something unavoidable is causing this.

I don’t see that implication. Cosmetic damage in my experience refers to damage that doesn’t affect the device functionality. Which I assume is the case here. It simply looks ugly, and especially so on a product this pricy.

Exactly. Cosmetic damage implies normal wear and tear expected form normal handling of the device. That is clearly not the case here.

I am wondering if people still encounter this scratchgate with their pencil (hoping Apple secretly fixed this issue). I got my iPad Pro about 3 months ago and just got the Pencil 2 yesterday. I hate to be using the case given some reviews on Amazon say it is either too chunky or it effects the magnet while charging. I have a couple questions:

1) Anybody who recently got a new iPad Pro and a Pencil 2 encounter the scratchgate?
2) If it is the case, do you have any good skin for the pencil? I am looking at this brand, but never got a skin before. I like the white color and want to have it look as close to real pencil as possible. Any thoughts? I either want to use a skin or a tape.

Thank you!

I have three pencils. One of which is the Apple Pencil and two offbrands. None of them have ever scratched my 11 inch iPad Pro. Not once. I do not press hard on my screen and maybe some of you have done this. unknown for sure.

I believe the scratching that is being discussed is that of the edge of the iPad that the gen 2 pencil adheres to magnetically to charge. Apparently the magnetic material (or some other metallic material) embedded in the pencil is not sufficiently covered in plastic to prevent the metal from scratching the iPad while the pencil is stored on it.

I'm still surprised how people wait for Apple to secretly fix stuff.

They secretly introduced throttling (and still deny it), secretly make iPads from the material that can be scratched (even though they state that their QA is the best in the world), secretly made it possible to bend (and still deny it), warranty secretly exchanges your iPads for the ones with non-working touch screens, they secretly flooded forums with non-existent people who pretend they bought Apple devices, for years they denied problems with MacBook keyboards, they try to keep all their problems in secret, publicly denying them until class action suits.

After all that I can only believe they can secretly break stuff, not fix it.

They admitted to it a while back. As far as I'm concerned, you're able to turn off throttling now.

I doubt that they intended for those things to happen.

Admittedly, they did somewhat cover the whole bending thing up, but they never denied it.

I couldn’t give less of a damn if there are minor scratches on an area of my ipad i never look at. If its an issue for you its a simple fix. Get a cover for the pencil

I have a 2018 12,9" space grey iPad Pro with an Apple pencil 2 for less than a month.

I always treat my electronics extremely carefully (always with case) but... small vertical scratches have appeared on the right side of my iPad Pro just where the magnet that holds the Apple Pencil in place is.

CeDjDc2

The scratches have also started to rub against my Apple Pencil and scratch the pencil itself.
It is really anoying to have an almost new and expensive device damage from "scratch".

I found some threads in the internet concerning this, so it seems is not an occasional problem.

Unfortunately I visited an apple store genius bar and they didn't know anything about that and did not offer me any solution (claiming the damage was probably done by me).

So...

Has anyone else experienced this?
Have we got an apple pencil 2 "scratchgate" on going???

Apple Genuises are liars

This is a well known problem revealed since some of the very first iPad Pro reviews

Everybody is a liar. ;)

Not everybody, but definitely Apple are.

No they didn't. They say it's not intentional throttling (that starts magically when the new iPhone comes out), rather it's a "battery saving feature". Hahaha, yeah really Apple.

They still admitted, after being caught implementing throttling, secretively.😉

I have to agree with you, this doesn’t smell like a grand evil master plan like some try to make it sound.
On the other hand this mentality kinda gives one some things to passionately dislike which might help give the day more structure. ;)
