I love Star Wars movies. At the same time, it concerns me that Apple is trying to appeal to Star Wars superfans with their marketing instead of being the "cool" brand they've long positioned themselves as throughout their rise to the top.

How is this an advantage over just ringing them and saying, 'Where are you?' as we all do at the moment?
The non-iPhones 15 version of Find My Friends combined with such terrifyingly archaic behaviors as using my ears, eyes and common sense when going to meet/find someone has yet to fail me.

Sure, this is extra convenient and precise.

But necessary if you already have the iPhones 14 and older version of Find My Friends?

No, not in my experience.

What the ad doesn't tell us is that the Mandalorian was late in meeting up with his friends which is why he needed to use the "Find Your Friends" feature. His iPhone alarm didn't wake him up when it was supposed to.

Nope, just had to make sure his cat was fed
