There should be an article for us all to remind us how to live off the cloud again! Including email!

I only switched on advance data when I ready the original article in this last week. Tbh I didn’t realise it wasn’t on by default.

That being said it’s very disappointing having this approached

Late to this thread so forgive me if answered already….. ;)

So has Apple given ‘back door’ access to the UK government to UK users iCloud data….?
Or do enforcement agencies have to apply for access to particular accounts?

I have never activated ADP.

I have nothing at all to hide by the way, I barely use iCloud features.
It is more of a case of if access is available, unsavoury types WILL find a way in.

Well, at least we don't live in the USA where the billionaires and kid-hackers to everyone single persons social security and personal info to do with as they will. I suppose ppl that are ok with that are the same ppl that would be complaining of that, due to the colour of the different parties in charge.
You’re somewhat right. Over here in the USA the media is merely the mouthpiece of any current administration and wouldn’t make noise about things like this.

I’m in the USA so I can pretty much say anything I want with the exception of course on private webpages like this. All that cool stuff that gets Germans in Brits a visit from police is a non-issue for me.
What do you want to say, that you can’t, and why do you think you should be entitled to do so without reproach?

You lock the front door ? Just who are you expecting to barge in? A camera crew?
Maybe - yeah! But really that was badly worded. I really mean that the front door is generally locked when that type of thing is happening, thought not always 😜 my point was does the person who I responded to, who seems to think that they have nothing to hide, mind if anyone watches them at any point in time, which is what forbidding e2ee could enable.

Apple has withdrawn ADP from the UK as of today for new users. People who already have it enabled in the UK will have to disable it themselves or they will no longer be permitted to use iCloud. Apple will provide precise details about disabling ADP and the cutoff point in the coming days.

There are no back doors. The UK gov has to apply for a court order to gain access to your unencrypted data, but these are almost always approved 99.99% of the time. In a few weeks, all iCloud data stored for UK customers will be accessible to authorities via court order.

iCloud data excludes things like Passwords and Messages which remain E2EE for now. But, the government absolutely has encrypted messaging in their crosshairs - hence why WhatsApp threatened to exit the UK last year.

So passwords/contacts etc. stored on iCloud?

They have opened Pandora's box. The unknowing strike again.
I think Apple will just do what they did for government requests prior to ADP being an option and that will appease the UK government. Apple offered to decrypt the San Bernardino’s shooters iCloud but insisted they could not decrypt the local device and I think Apple ultimately could not decrypt the iCloud back up after the government reset the iCloud password. Not sure how they resolved this, but I don’t remember seeing a mention of a backdoor.

Didn’t Apple have to share the keys with CCP officials?

If you say something against my religion that’s offensive to me. Should you be allowed to say that? I could be offended by some of your political views. You’re not going to be the one deciding what is offensive all the time.

1. I wouldn’t say anything that would be offensive to your religion to you.

2. The law would punish anyone from doing so, so it’s there to protect YOU, just as much as it’s there to protect THEM, from YOUR hate speech. See how that works?

3. I don’t decide what is, or is not offensive, or that falls within a legal description of hate speech. But I don’t need to walk around with a cooy of the rules, since being an adult I use a thing called common sense.

So this is no different (for me) for the past 20+ years then, if I have never used ADP.

This is WILD! Absolutely unbelievable! UK residents why do you allow your government to do this? Wow....

iPhone and iPad users in the UK when suddenly realize all their passwords, text messages and emails are being backed up to iCloud and can now be accessed by their communist government 😬.

I don’t know where you’re from, but I can almost guarantee that you’re ‘allowing’ your government do equally bad things. Let’s not fool ourselves into thinking any other government wouldn’t want the very same thing.

We are under a dictatorship, they got in on lies. It is terrible here, can’t see how they can be removed.

And there was me thinking it was a democratically elected government.

If you don’t like it here, maybe you could move to a ‘proper’ democratic country? Russia, or China maybe?

That’s pretty scary. The first paragraph is funny because you said there’s no restriction unless it’s offensive then it’s restricted. Anything could be offensive. If you mentioned on social media that Jesus isn’t the real God that would be extremely offensive to me! In that example, you should not be allowed to say that.

How would you feel if you were arrested for making a post online saying God wasn’t real even if you believed that was true?

I’m just trying to show you how something you might think is OK could be extremely offensive to another person. I don’t know if you do or don’t believe in whatever God.
"Anything could be offensive."

Yes. That's just it. Anything at all, anything ridiculous, or according to the caprices of the times. So "being offended" doesn't really have any objective meaning.

Christopher Hitchens put it well: "If someone tells me that I've hurt their feelings, I say, 'I'm still waiting to hear what your point is.' I've been told, 'That's offensive' as if those two words constitute an argument or a comment. Not to me they don't."

And: "Those who are determined to be 'offended' will discover a provocation somewhere. We cannot possibly adjust enough to please the fanatics, and it is degrading to make the attempt."

What if I became 'offended' by people who choose to wear the colour yellow? Maybe I take it as a mark or badge of something or other I don't like.

Maybe everyone should be offended for 15 minutes every week. Maybe then they'd realise how ridiculous it all is and get over it.

They've already strong armed apple into removing protection for uk customers. Not bad for a country that isn't an empire.

Essentially Apple are forced to comply with this request, or withdraw entirely from the uk market. They have done a halfway house measure by only removing ADP which i am worried means that are compliant for the rest of the world.

They passed a law and Apple abided by it in the most malicious way they possibly could. Hardly the wielding of a tyrannical fist.
