Newer games require more CPU power, not just better graphics. I don't have crysis on my Mac, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was CPU-bound at my screen resolution.

The 2006 models have a slower bus speed and slower memory. I'm not sure why people are shocked that eventually there will be a CPU bottle neck, especially for games that can't take advantage of multicore.

A new GPU can't solve everything, even if the 5870 is a pretty nice GPU.

I strongly believe new 5000 cards works in ALL mac pros.
there are just a sh*tlo*ad of confusion coming from people like barefeats and OWC having their head up their arses and not doing proper tests.

dude, wtf. are you barefeats or what? stop talking crap or get a new nick, before people start taking your advices.

I don't understand what you are flaming about. I've said from the beginning I believed the 5xxx cards would work on all Mac Pros. I've gone through the effort of testing the 5870 on the 2009, 2008, and 2006 (which I had to borrow). I reported what I experienced: it worked on all three.

I jumped through a hoop to get a 5770 to compare to the 5870 on all Mac Pros. I'm driving to PowerMax again on Monday to test it in their 2006 and do added testing on the 5870. I'm taking the 4870 with me as well.

I have posted observable results on this forum even before I posted them on my site. What is it about those actions that you find improper?

I can confirm that the CrossFire connector is exposed on the 5770. So I plan to get a second one to confirm that you can "CrossFire" two 5770s in Windows (Boot Camp).

Thanks again Rob-ART, first post updated with this info.

Does the 5870 have a CrossFire connector too?

Mac Pro 2008 GPUs: Radeon HD 5870 and 5770 versus Geforce 8800 and Radeon 2600

Great job barefeats! I can't thank you enough for all you're doing. I was waiting to see the difference between the 5870 and the 8800, which I have, and you're right: the 8800 looks sick by comparison. In fact, your test mule has the same exact specs as mine.
It will be very interesting to see the Starcraft II results.
I hope you find a solution to the the MDPs problems...

Thanks again !

It´s a Gamer´s question :)

Thank you so much for testing this! You do a great job!

When I have seen the test there is one other test that could be of interest:

How would two 5770 cards in Crossfire Mode do in the MP 2008 under bootcamp compared to one 5870 card in bootcamp ???

That would be interesting, since the two 5770´s cost roughly the same as on 5870 ?? - Would they beat the "one card setup" ??

:)

Great work barefeats! Please keep us updated on the MDP issue. I want to use a 27" ACD on my upcoming 5770 (now have 8800GT on 2008 MP) without using a converter (which doesn't support the full high res 27").

Me, too. I want to use a 5770 or 5870 to replace my 8800GT in an 8-core 2008 while using the 27" ACD plus two other monitors.

I'm also eagerly awaiting these results. My 8800gt just burnt out and I'm tossing up between these 2 cards.
I also have the MP11.005C.B08 rom

5870 Available this Friday !

I just got off the phone with Mac Connection, and it looks like the 5870 will be available by Friday (in 4 days).
I'm crossing fingers and toes... :D

Is that the online store, Mac Connection, or some department inside Apple called Mac Connection?

Mac Connection also said that the 5770 will be available on Friday. Let's see if they can come through.

Thanks all. Updates added.

- 5770/5870 availability @ MacConnection
- More info from Rob-ART on issues with 3 displays
- "Active" MDP --> single link DVI adapters mentioned @ AnandTech
