Just spoke with Mac Connection again. Now the 5770 is backordered until Sept. 17. It's Sept. 21 at Mac Mall. I think they don't really know until the packages physically arrive from Apple.

It's frustrating because my old 7300 GT graphics card is failing, and I really need to get a new card ASAP.

I ordered a 5770 from Apple on 8/25 and got a shipping notification last night - it's on a Fedex truck and should arrive today.

Thanks, first post updated.

Strange -- I ordered mine on August 9th, and it's scheduled to arrive on Sep 24.

I suspect the shipping dates from Apple were just 4 weeks after they received your order - however they'll ship it to you whenever they have enough in stock.

At least I'm hoping for something earlier than the Sept 29th date they gave me... :(

(with an Oct 5 arrival date - but given shipping issues in the Yukon, who knows)

I hear you, Yukon Joe -- I just find it strange that I submitted my order a full two weeks earlier, and his card is already on a truck...makes no sense to me.

5770 works with DVI on 2006 Mac Pro 1,1

I ordered a 5770 from Apple on 8/31 and it just arrived today by standard shipping. It seems to work well on my first generation Mac Pro with the 1900x1220 Cinema display via DVI, and is not at all noisy as far as I can hear.

I can NOT get it to work via the MDP with the adapter that came with my MacBook Pro. I just get a black screen. I guess it's possible that somehow it would work with an actual MDP display and not the adapter, don't know.

Thanks to barefeats and others who've posted all the info in this thread! It really helped me make a quick ordering decision after my previous video adapter died on the 31st.

Amazingly fast delivery by Apple.

I ordered 5770 for my 2007 Macpro 2.1 8 core on September 6th with standard shipping and I just received an email from Apple that it was shipped and I should have it on the 14th :):). I'm located in Los Angeles Area.

Fedex just delivered my new 5770 and 24' ACD WOW it was supposed to be on 9/14. I ordered it on 9/6 with standard shipping and I got it in 5 days with a surprise Saturday delivery, as soon as I install it I'll let the forum know how it does on 2007 8 core MacPro 2.1.

For someone who got a kit 5770. Did it come with the power cable?

Yes it did, and it is working great so far, I have 30 and 24 ACD attached to it right now. I had X1900 in there before so I just used her power cable the one that came wit 5770 is sill in the box.

Still no shipping confirmation for me, though I'm looking forward to receiving mine. Might even pick up an additional cheap 5770 PC card for some CrossFire action. :)

Got My 5770 Today

Got my Apple 5770 Today. Boots great in my first gen. I'm seeing some performance issue though. Dock stacks run sluggishly but ran fine with my 8800GT. Boot is taking about 10-15 seconds longer. OpenGL apps are failing to launch as well (tried Quake and Diablo 2). Still poking at it. Any thoughts?

-------------------------------------------

UPDATE:

Had a Radeon 2600 in Slot four. Took it out and dropped on a new install things are running smooth as butter. Now lets see if I can put it back in...

-------------------------------------------

UPDATE2:

I ended up getting all sorts of wonkiness with the 2600 back in. Curiosity took over and I tried the old NV7300 I had lying around. Guess what, works perfectly. Looks like there's a conflict in the ATI drivers between the 2600 and the 5770.

2 minor updates in first post:

1. 5770's now shipping from Apple.

2. Dave Baumann from ATI tweeted availability of active DisplayPort --> single link DVI adapters for Eyefinity from Newegg. (Note: "regular" DisplayPort, not mini DisplayPort)

Probably because its not fully supported in the first gen Mac Pro.

That is why I am sticking with my 4870 card. There is no real incentive to upgrade.

Supported...

Supported is such a funny word in the tech industry. In my years working at Microsoft (flame if you will) the number of things that we didn't support because of lack of manpower to test them were innumerable. That doesn't mean it didn't work, just that we didn't have time to make sure it worked in all scenarios. (ie. you can run an active directory off of a Solaris LDAP store, it just takes a long time to test everything). Of course, that doesn't mean it does work either. That's what we're hoping to find out in this thread. All "supported" means is my book is I can't go to apple for help :).

Now on my Windows box, the difference between the 5770 and the 4870 isn't all that drastic, maybe a 5% performance gain, so you're wise if that was the upgrade you're considering. Now the 5870, that's a new ball game, but not worth it for a first gen mac IMO.

For what it's worth, the apple store now lists a shipping time of 1-2 weeks, instead of 2-4 weeks. 5870 is still "currently unavailable".

I ordered a 5770 last night. Says it will ship 9/27, still two weeks out.
