Forgive me if this has already been posted and I missed it, but is there anyone who has confirmed that the 5770 card will work in a Mac Pro 1,1 with the MP11.005D.B00 firmware? According to the first post it's still yet to be tested.

I believe barefeats conducted the 5770 and 5870 tests on a 1,1 with that same firmware. Both worked fine.

That should be fine.. the issue is with firmware MP11.005C.B08, which i think the vast majority of MP 1,1 owners are running. If that firmware is compatible with the 5770 and/or the 5870 and able to run 2 displays.

I ordered a 5770 last night. Says it will ship 9/27, still two weeks out.

I ordered one August 31st, gave me a shipping date at the time of Sept 29th, but it shipped today.

In the mean time my Mac Pro has been sitting in the closet for a week with no working video card...

I have a macpro1,1 with MP11.005C.B08 firmware - i'm seriously looking at getting a 5770 and would be hugely grateful if someone can confirm it will work before i folk out the cash!!

This looks more like 5 weeks to me...

I ordered the 5770 September 7th, and Apple gave me a shipping date at the time of October 6th and a delivery date on or before October 11th...

This looks more like 5 weeks to me...

So what's up with the 2-4 weeks tag..?

It's 2-4 weeks before shipping. The delivery date is in the hands of the shipper.

2-4 weeks is only an estimate. When they generate their initial receipt, they seem to take the maximum of that time frame - 4 weeks. However many (including myself) are reporting their item has shipped well inside that maximum time frame.

Could someone who actually owns a 2010 Mac Pro and an official HD5870 confirm the following?

I've seen this on the Apple Store US review for the HD5870.
This person says that the official HD5870 is not compatible with Mac Pro2008.

To note, I know that barefeat confirmed it works,
but are these facts written in this review true?
Like the part where he/she says,
"The card available from the Apple Store requires one 6 and one 8 pin PCIE port."
and also,
"Additionally, the 2008 motherboard has two proprietary 6-pin PCIE jacks accessible without pulling out the front fan assembly.".

Thanks in advance.

There's some confusion about what I said earlier about powering this card. Let me clarify:
-First: The card available from the Apple Store requires one 6 and one 8 pin PCIE port. Companies like VisionTek and Sapphire (from whom I got my 5870) make HD 5870s with two 6 pin PCIE ports.
-Second: Apple's built-in PCIE power slots are proprietary (about a millimeter smaller than industry standard). Additionally, the 2008 motherboard has two proprietary 6-pin PCIE jacks accessible without pulling out the front fan assembly. Go have a look right now -- that's the way it is.

So, to clarify: this specific card won't do it for you. Go get one that you can verify uses two 6-pin ports and not a 6- and 8-pin port. I can confirm a Sapphire HD5870 working very smoothly in my Snow Leopard / Win7 system with a second 6-pin proprietary PCIE cable purchased third party.

Caviar, that review seems to be bogus. I've read that review, but no one else has confirmed it, and others have specifically denied it.

In any event it is moot, since the card isn't actually available from the Apple store yet.

Don't worry about that. My 4890 'requires' an 8-pin PCIe port and I had no issues using it with a 6-pin port.

So your using a 8-pin to 6-pin convert cable or something?

I wonder how barefeat connected the official HD5870 to the 2008 Mac Pro.

The HD5870 has two six pin connectors, and the 2010 Mac Pros that ship with it are connected to the card using two six pin connectors.

So the review is totally bunk.

He said it has 2 six-pin connectors.

Thanks!
Appreciations for confirming that.
Then it looks like there're no problems.

Looks like the person from Essex who wrote on the Apple review was wrong or lying or whatever.

Thanks guys, for the reply :)

Thank you to you too ! :)
Now I can get ready to order the official HD5870 for my 2008 Mac Pro!
Hope it starts shipping soon.

I should also mention that Barefeats tested the HD5870 in all older models without having to do anything funny with the power connectors. :)

Barefeats had no issues with it in the 2008 Mac Pro. I'm also planning on picking up the card for my 08. :)

Yes, it works with that firmware.

I ordered a 5770 from Apple today and got an acknowledgment saying that it will ship on 9/27. A few hours later, I got a shipment notification that it has shipped and will get here by 9/16 (I got the free shipping). I'm not able to track it on UPS yet, but I hope to see it soon.

So although Apple's website says 2-4 week delivery, I think the 5770 is in stock and shipping immediately.

Just curious. Has anyone outside the US had their 5770 ship yet?

Yes. I'm in the UK and mine arrived today.

I ordered it on the 27th August, shipping date was quoted as "on or before 05 Oct, 2010".

I got ship notification on Saturday 11th, for "on or before 14.09.2010" and it arrived today.

I currently run two 23" alu Cinema displays (DVI) which I'll be replacing with two of the new 27". Until these are available the card isn't of any use to me, so it's staying sealed in the box just in case the 27s are prohibitively expensive!
