So... has anyone put a 5770 in a 3.1 (2008) MP (under SnowLeopard) and hooked it up to a 27" ACD through Mini Display port already? Audio/iSight function?

would appreciate to hear from you!

I've just installed the 5770 in my 1,1 mac pro and I can report that under windows bootcamp I'm getting almost double the frame rates I got with the 8800GT on CoD4 (was getting about 25 on high settings and now getting about 50) and Borderlands (was getting about 35 on high settings and now getting about 60).

And, as others have pointed out, it's a LOT quieter!!

So for me it's a real upgrade.

This will do me for now but would love to know when someone ties two of them together!!

I had installed the 5770 in my 2009 Mac Pro and works great. Great improvement from the 120GT but I decided to return it and just wait it out for the 5870. I can confirm that when hooking the 24 inch led cinema display under the sound system preferences did say mini display output was unavailable so it looks like the 5770 and 5870 pass audio through the mini display port.

It's been done on a 3,1 and 5,1 and offers a considerable performance boost according to those who have this setup running.

Not sure if anyone has tested it on a 1,1 yet. Just bear in mind that the cards will have to run at 8x in its 1.x slots, which is comparable to running the cards at 4x in 2.x slots. The 3,1 and 5,1 are able to run them at 16x in 2.x slots. The performance hit is around 5-8% according to these tests.

I have a 1,1 and am highly tempted to get another 5770 to test it out. I was considering a cheaper generic 5770, though I'm wary of how the fans will run in Mac OS, so I may just opt for another Apple 5770. But I have bills to pay at the moment, so this project will have to wait a bit. :D If you manage to try it before me, let us know how it goes!

Anyone runnig 2x 5770's or 5770 + 8800 GT?

I have 2 large monitors (27,24) to drive from my MP 1,1. Would it be silly to get 2x 5770 and dedicate one to each monitor. I do 3d work and was thinking I may get better performance from dedicating 1 card per screen. Crazy? not worth it?

I would also have 2x DVI's as a result.

The next idea, would be to leave the 8800 GT I currently have in to drive the 24, and put the 5770 in Slot 1 to drive the 27. Any thoughts?

If the 5870 ever sees the light of day, I would go for that and drive both monitors with it.

I was hoping you would have tried it by now! I've also got bills to pay!! It's very tempting to buy one just to see and then return it; only if it works well you know it's not going to get returned!!

Realistically I'm not going to buy another one for a while - I'm actually not that much into gaming (just love looking at the graphics!!) but hopefully someone will soon so I might know I have yet another upgrade option.

Very best

It's what I do at home. I'd say it's worth it. If anything, it gets you peace of mind. You know for sure that all of the VRAM is going to that one display, so you don't have to worry about what resources are going where.

Yes, you will also get better performance.

I have a late 2008 Mac Pro 2.8 Quad Core. I run two DVI monitors. One 27" and one 22". It looks like I'll need to purchase a MDP to DVI? :/

I'm looking to upgrade my card as well. I think I've come to the conclusion I want the 5870. I don't game heavily, but I play SC. Maybe that's not enough reason to get the card?

Where are you all purchasing your Upgrade Kits? Apple is out of stock and the kits I see online say "For 2010 Models".

That's it. It's only supported in the 2010, but works in others. I have a 5770 in a 2008 quad core and it works great.

I just picked up a 5770 for my wife today at Microcenter. Going into a 1,1 with the B08 .. I'll report back any findings if I run across anything.

HD 5770 working fine in a 2008 Mac Pro 2.8 Oct Core

Yes, this card will work in a 2008 Mac Pro. I have just installed it and it works like a dream. It is driving two monitors (2 x HP2475w), 1 being driven by the DVI port the other being driven by a Mini-DP to HDMI adapter.

Not a good result ... 30" ACD ... flickering, snow, you name it. Not sure what to try/do aside from taking it back as defective or ... ????

Chris

I think it's a graphics issue with the OS itself. I did occasionally get snow but not anymore (touch wood) after replugging in the screen when the machine was on. It sounds all too familiar (and looked it) to the issues I was having with my MBP and 30" Cinema Display using the infamous Mini DP > Dual Link adapter which leads me to think it could be OS as from what I could gather the issue was isolated to OSX and bootcamp was fine.

Hmm, I have the exact same configuration as you and have no issues: 30" ACD, 5770, B08 (1,1). I am running a developer version of 10.6.5. If you don't have access to that, make sure you have the SL Graphics Update for 10.6.4 installed.

Yeah, have the graphics update installed. System has no issues starting up with the card in and getting to the desktop so I'm leaning towards a bad card. Thanks for your post. It helps a lot.

I just installed a 5770 in my Mac Pro 3,1 and everything seems to be running fine, except... the secondary monitor is detected, yet staying black. I'm using two 23" Acer monitors, both via DVI. One on the existing DVI port and the other via Mini DP to DVI-I adapter.

I'm thinking that it might be the adapter but I'm not sure, thus me posting here. Is a special kind of Mini DP to DVI adapter required? I didn't think I'd need a (expensive) dual-link DVI adapter and this DVI-I one I got should do the trick, no?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

It probably is the adapter, do some more digging for success stories. I think people had good results with the expensive MDP-> Dual link dvi adapter. Sadly you should not technically need a dual link for a 23" monitor, just 24" and above.

Well, according to this Apple KB article, a regular Mini DP to DVI adapter should work for two DVI monitors.

It's for Early 2009 and Early 2010 Mac Pro's but it really shouldn't make a difference for an Early 2008 configuration, I'd think. I don't have any other Mini DP to X adapters to try.

Hmm...

5770? yep.
Mac Pro 3.1? check.
Snow Leopard? aye.
27" ACD via MDP? indeed.

All working fine. iSight and audio too.

Hello there good woman and men.

I moved from Sweden to London to study at Escape studios, had to leave my Macpro(2008) home for the time )= after a 2 weeks here i realised that i need my Macpro here so arranged it to flown here, it shuld be here for tomorow.

I also realised that it needed some uppgrade, made a post on a swedish macforum and got the information that i can put one Radeon HD 5870 (awesome)

i still have one question, been using google to find a awnser but no luck. I need 2 6-pin power connectors to power it, in my macpro is there a second 6-pin corde hanging around? will there be one in the apple uppgrade kit box whit the grafics card? can i buy one online or in a store here in london? is all 6-pin power conectors the same?

if anyone knows pleas help me.

Best regards Joakim (sorry for weak english)

The Apple 5870 should come with needed power cables.

Of course since they don't sell it yet, I guess no one would know for sure.

2009 Mac Pro

Unreal!

I was running a GT120 and a GTX285... Two 20" ACD and one 30" ACD... I then decided to ditch the old ACD's and get the all new 27" ACD. What an upgrade!

In the meantime... My ACD 27" arrived before the ATI 5770 did, so I was running the 27" off the GT120, because of course the GTX285 only does DVI... I had no idea how much a graphics card really helps! Almost all my applications would stutter when moving a window or viewing videos... My ATI 5770 finally arrived today... All is back to normal!

ATI 5770, 2009 Mac Pro, ACD 27", life is good!

I'll probably upgrade to the 5870 when it eventually comes out... In the meantime, I'm sure I'll miss my GTX285... Anyone want it? For a price of course ;)

Yeah I am stuck with the GT120 until the 5870 comes out. It has been painful, especially now with the 27" ACD, but it will be so marvelous when I get the 5870.

Thankfully I have a ton of patience and will continue to wait as long as it takes.
