WHAT?!? No "Google this phone number" feature...again?!?!

Goddamnit, Apple, all I want is to be able to easily Google an unrecognized phone number. I know the lack of full-blown caller ID is the phone company's fault but you guys can easily add a button to the number list. JEEZZZ!!!!

A subtle but useful change.

The triple-click to turn on accessibility is a very nice addition. Now I can invert the screen quickly, which helps a great deal with my poor vision.

Nice. I don't know if many are realizing it, but the iPhone is becoming a great device for the visually handicapped... (Voiceover rocks!)

Help!!!!!!!!

I tried to update my iPhone 3G, but just before it started updating it gave me an error, i believe its 2001. That left it in restore mode, which would be fine except that if I try to do a restore it only gives me an option to restore and update and if I do that it doesnt work. It also gives 16-- error codes sometimes. And the worst thing is, when i started the update process, it put all the previous firmware files in the trash and i very very stupidly emptied it.
So, if no one can think of a solution, then a download link for 3.0 would be helpful.
I have a Macbook Unibody with OS X 10.6 Snow leopard.
Any help, preferably quickly, would be much appreciated.

I've noticed an increase in speed as well. Which is to say, 3.0 slowed down the **** out of my iPhone 3G, and 3.1 has brought it back to what it was before. As with every .x iPhone update, I perform a restore and a "set up as new phone" as opposed to restoring from the backup.

Tethering would be nice but I have no need for it atm, I think MMS is for sending garbage 90% of the time though I'm not looking forward to it potentially slowing down the network overall, and I also have no jailbreaks or unlocks (haven't you people learned to NOT update by now?) so this update is a definite positive.

Finder, select the Go menu, select Go To Folder, and type in the path "~/Library/iTunes/iPhone Software Updates/" (without quotes) and the folder will open with all of the updates you have downloaded. "~" is the Unix term for your home folder, and does not need to be changed. You can then copy and paste an ipsw file to the desktop for easy use with another application. Unless Apple changed something it always kept the firmware file, but did put previous versions of updated Touch/iPhone applications in the trash.

When someone on Exchange sends a calendar invite via email, it still appears as an attachment that you can't import or open in iPhone 3.1.

So much for being business friendly.

You mean they broke this? they used to come through as clickable .ics attachements....I still usually go into my Calendar app and accept from there though.

EDIT: Just got a meeting notice and it appeared in the Exchnage Calendar on the app and as a regular .ics email attachment in my Exchange Inbox on the phone.

i didn't read the entire thread so excuse me if this has been covered.

will there be an up date to 3.1 on the 25th for MMS? because right now i see no options for attaching photos or videos to messages.

There will most likely be a minor update to activate the feature that already exists on the phone once MMS officially rolls out.

Heh... That's it! I've had enough!

3.1 broke tethering!

I bought my iPhone without SIM/Netlock in an O2 store!
O2 allows me to tether with my data plan at no extra cost / charge!
It used to work flawlessly! And now Apple decides to lock me out!

Nicely done!

Keep on castrating the iPhone and it's features and look how to annoy your customers and how to drive them away!

iPhone OS 3.1.1

Hi,
today I've updated my iPod Touch and noticed that the update revealed in iTunes 9 (on my Mac) is not 3.1 but 3.1.1?

I haven't read the whole thread about the 3.1 update, so I excuse myself if this is already has been handled...

My question is if anyone else noticed this?

With regards.

Not only is Safari snappier, but my oleophobic screen is slippier

I'm still having problems with Exchange though - works fine with the server on the corporate WiFi, but for the mobilsync server it's still not working. Was fine on my 2G, never worked on 3GS :(

I haven't had any luck with Exchange either - it's driving me crazy :(.

Is it normal to have 10 iPhone updates & restores totaling over 1.5GB in your trash after installing this update?

I don't remember anything like this ever happening before with previous iPhone updates.

I'm worried that the installation might not have gone correctly, although the iPhone seems fine.

I can't decide whether to empty the trash or not. I didn't even know there were that many iPhone install versions saved on my computer. Does this mean Apple wants to make sure no one can go back to an earlier version to regain a function like tethering or some other hack?

Anyone know?

So that's a reason not to implement it?

There is not one manufacturer for mobile phones that offers the same number of features surrounding remote security for a phone. What are you complaining about?

BB and the RIM have a pretty robust security feature set, so i wouldn't just write off apple as the leader in this space. They have had some flaws as all others have them exploited and fixed the holes for now. i just wouldn't tout it as a security feature as it does nothing for some one who doesn't pay an additional $100 a year for Apple's serivce. Why not allow it with other services.....oh wait we do know...:D

DO NOT UPGRADE TO 3.1 if you use internet tethering!!!

I upgraded today and the option to do internet tethering is not in the 3.1 OS under Settings -> General -> Networking... It's gone! I called Apple and they said they were asked to remove it by AT&T and that under the AT&T contract tethering was not allowed.

I asked to go back to 3.0 but Apple Tech Support stated that was IMPOSSIBLE!

Wait a second, at first I wasn't understanding all the complaints about tethering because I was still able to tether, then I realized it seems to be an American thing.

I'm wondering why America you can't tether or apparently MMS while here in Canada you can?

Also, does anyone know how to use Genius Mix on your iPhone?

Because the official American carrier doesn't support MMS or Tethering yet.

MMS will be available on 9/25 and tethering still has no ETA [which is why everyone is up in arms over loosing their tethering hack here in the US.]

And yeah, could someone enlighten us on the Genius Mix on the device? It works in iTunes 9 awesome for me, but I don't even see it on my iPhone 3G.

so im guessing 3.1.1 will enable MMS on AT&T.

and im going to guess they will release that on the 25th

To use genius mix on your iphone, you have to sync the genius mix under the music tab for syncing in iTunes on your computer. After you do that, it will show up under the "more" tab on your iphone.

After the 3.1 update the new Apple earphones with remote, mic and volume now partially works with older 1g iPhones. The volume buttons still does nothing, but the center play/pause button is now fully functional.

The volume buttons on the side of the iPod touch 2g are now delayed or something, it's really annoying
