Ok, remember I only been using macs since April and have not dug too deep under the hood on certain things. With working 16 hr days supporting MS-SQL at 100+ hospitals, I don't have time for much digging - only dig when something intrigues me.

How does that work? and how can you set it? the only way I know how to magnify something is with OmniDazzle (not what I got it for, but a nice little feature). One thing I liked RKLAUNCHER for on a Windows machine to simulate the dock was it blew up the icons when you rolled over them. The things I did not like RKL for:

1. icons do not resize when dropping more to the dock, so they would eventually wrap off the screen and you could not get to them.

2. Wrong icon symbols used for the most common of apps.

My Dell Laptop (before it died) was my personal machine that I used as a backup for work. since it was my machine I tweaked the heck out of it to make it feel like a mac.

1. rk launcher
2. found patches and tweeks to give your windows the brushed aluminum and aqua look.
3. downloaded a vista patch for XP that simulated the rolodex. i looked for expose, but could not find anything.
4. applied the os x mouse icons
5. applied the panther sound pack (could not find on for leopard).
6. changed my task bar to be extremely narrow, aluminum, and the start button was a blue apple; then locked it to the top of the screen - yes there is even a tweek patch for that.
7. even found a tweek to change my Windows login page to look like Apple and have apple logo's.

Took about 3 hrs of work to accomplish....

Go to the Apple Menu, scroll down to Dock, and Enable Magnification. And if the magnification isn't as good as you'd like, you can go into dock preferences and change the settings for the magnification.

I encountered my first problem today, most likely caused by 10.5.5 (as all was fine in 10.5.4).

I get to school to connect to our school network (uses 802.1X security) and it wouldn't let me connect. It had worked fine all last week before I updated and now it took me about 25 minutes to get it working correctly. I could sometimes connect but it wouldn't let me on the internet... just the network. Eventually it decided to work.

Then, I get home and it does the same thing to me here. This time I notice it says "Airport does not have an IP address and cannot connect to the internet". I kept disconnecting and reconnecting (with time waiting in between to see if it would eventually get an IP address) and eventually it worked. I don't know what they changed with the network settings in this update, but it's made my MacBook (and me) work even harder to be able to connect to the internet.

After installing the 10.5.5 update, my powerpc g5 is so "snaqqier" it feels like an octa core mac pro with 32gb of ram!

i tell ya - it's snaqqy!!!
:p

After update

After the update , I can connect to the internet. Once I close Safari, or Mail, I lose my connection ( wireless ) completely. I reboot the netgear, to no avail. I reboot the modem to no avail. The only fix is to reboot my imac. Once I do that, I can connect again until I close out the browser.
Any suggestions. All settings on the iMac, and router are correct. Everything was fine until I ran the update today.

Try using Ethernet (if you have an Ethernet wire).

After the issues I had with iTunes 8...

I'm not all raring to go for .5...

I've never had an iTunes upgrade go so bad. Started in the morning when I started the update, I stuck around long enough for it to start eh install and left for the day, came back in the evening expecting a behaving iMac and got a whirling dervish that was on a bent...

Light blue screens, no booting, desktop and no cursors, no desktop, L-O-N-G pause while booting... Seemed hardly worth it.

Finally over an hour later and many holding down of the power buttons, I got the desktop and could start iTunes (while crossing fingers) and got the Genius note. I don't want Apple knowing what's in my library, although they probably already know most of it already by now.

I was wondering if I'd have to cut and run and reinstall Leopard from the DVD. OUCH!

Anyone else have issues with iTunes 8 and 'Quick'-time 7.5.5? I was sweating bullets there for a while... Has anyone had issues have with 10.5.5 installs or running yet??? Now I'm being cautious...

Is it possible that iTunes flipped out because I have like 5 movies in it from HandBrake?

I can understand the snaq food taste of the G5, soggy G5s are sort of a taste nightmare, glad to hear you likely got more crunch in the G5 again.

Also: Type Command+Shift+4 then, before selecting anything, hit spacebar, and it'll take a pic of a single window of your choosing (it even saves transparencies and adds a drop shadow). Try taking a pic of the dock, too.

There's also Grab, a program in the Utilities folder that I didn't know about for the longest time. It's not as convenient as some keystrokes, but I can never remember those. It can capture a "Selection," "Window," "Screen," or "Timed Screen" with keystrokes. I use it to commandeer non-saveable photos from IMDb.com. It saves files as tiffs.

Not true. Permissions errors are pretty common after an update. I usually like to repair permissions after an update, there are usually five or six issues found. It doesn't hurt anything so why not repair permissions?

The permissions may not match those stored in the BOM files in /Library/Receipts, but the differences are so minor they can be safely ignored. Many can be blamed on transient files that have been re-created since the initial installation, such as log files in /private/var/log. There's also a few messages about lack of execute bits on some .PNG files in the resource files of the Airport Utility, but as there's no reason why you'd want to set execute bits on these files in the first place there's no problem there either.

The SUID warnings when checking permissions are just giving out additional information. The SUID permission allows an executable program to run as the user ID of the program's owner instead of those of the current user, and therefore they can pose security issues. These warnings just indicate that there's files with SUID permissions have since been updated, and of course that was by another software update. Applying a Combo update gets rid of these errors, but the file permissions themselves are not changed.

Feel free to continue to rebuild permissions before and after every upgrade, but you're not going to acheive anything of not.

OK between to this post, all the reactions to my screen resolution, the drug references, and some of the other comments I read.....

I THINK THIS FORUM HAS SUNK TO A NEW LOW... Of the what 600 posts? I think only maybe half or less were usefull or shed insight or proper experiences based on the update.

Oh, we've been lower. :D

I cannot be bothered. I am using Tiger, Leopard is unusable crap. Apple's Vista. It will never be finsished to any useful level of quality, that I have seen...

Yeah, you're right. Lets just give up, in fact, lets not even bother breathing, too much effort.

Aiport Fixes?

Hi MacRumors,

Has there been any confirmation of this updating many of the problems that has been shown with Airport Connectivity? Ever since the early days of Leopard I've had constant droppings all the time, and having no success with many of the tips given.

I think I saw earlier in this thread something about airport extreme card firmware being updated, but have not looked through the topic to see if it has definitely helped.

Thank you!

-Colin

well since you do not use Leopard, why do you even bother making comments about it?

Huh? What are you talking about. I do use Leopard. read my signature...

*Edit - never mind I see you corrected yourself further down. After 22 pages and almost 600 posts, I give up on trying to keep up.

in Short:

"MY" <-notice the guoting, refering to my self and my experience only.
1. resolution improved.
2. Itunes sounds better and louder
3. Have not noticed any flaws. The Documents on my dock changing from grid to list threw me, but I did add about 30 more files since I last launched it from the dock, and i have been pointed to that this is a feature.
4. Also learned some nice features along the way...

On a positive note...... I HEARD FROM OUR OPS DEPT OUR COMPANY MAY BE CONSIDERING MACS BY THE END OF THE YEAR. They are just waiting on the final implemementation of a new firewall that has been upgraded to allow mac VPN connectivity.. Heard they have been testing it this year (there is also one piece of software they have to make mac compatible). I also heard I am on the short list for getting one!!!!!!!!!! WOOO HOOOOOO

Let's pray that you manage to convince your IT colleagues of the wisdom of Mac. And for God's sake, I hope you are in charge of the implementation. If your comments on this thread are anything to go by not a single problem will be left unresolved, regardless of how small it is.

Edit: Sorry, just noticed some may object to the 'Lets pray' and 'for God's sake' ... not meant to be religious, just normal Uk expressions.

1. Resolution can't have improved! Read up on what 'a resolution' is. It can only be increased by a physical hardware upgrade (i.e. upgrading your screen). It sounds like you probably had your resolution below your native resolution, causing things to appear slightly blurry. There was a graphics enhancement, but this is drivers for the graphics cards - to sort out some glitches and improve over all performance (i.e. Core Animation).

2. I agree, iTunes 8 sounds a lot clearer than iTunes 7, and it seems a common thing people have noticed going from the iTunes discussion threads.

I am, but it's not showing that it's 3.1.2

Try trashing Safari + prefs (user/library/Safari and user/library/preferences), without emptying the trash just yet, and then proceeding to 'Software Update' for a cleaner install of Safari 3.1.2. If Software Update does not offer 3.1.2, then try downloading it from the Apple Website: http://www.apple.com/downloads/

Also, try the following
-Clear 'Safari cache' in Safari menu
-Repair disk permissions
-Trash com.apple.quicktime.plugin.preferences.plist (user/library/preferences)

Hope this works.

Don't bother - this is a totally pointless exercise. It was only need for those who either dual-booted into Mac OS 9 or installed software using some other buggy installers. The rest of the time it doesn't achieve anything worthwhile. Yes some files may appear to have different permissions to those stored in the various BOM files, but generally they can be safely ignored.

No way. The Finder (and other stuff that can cause problems on a system that is not maintained well) is updated in this version.
And believe me, I'm on a Mac for a very long time :D. The discussion about repairing permissions has been done several times. It does solve problems and if you do it on a regular base it will avoid problems :)

Take care all

when will apple fix the 256 color issue for starcraft

I believe there was an update a few days ago. I don't have the game but maybe this will help you?

"Blizzard Entertainment has once again provided an update for StarCraft, the company's popular sci-fi RTS. Version 1.15.3 fixes a communication bug with league play and solves issues with OS X versions which do not support 256 color mode.

Here's the list of changes to in the lastest update:

Bug Fixes
- Fixed a communication bug affecting third party leagues.
- Alt-F6 no longer stalls the game on Windows.
- Game now works correctly on versions of Mac OS X which do not support 256-color mode."

As with any UNIX or UNIX based system, repairing permissions is a maintenance procedure which helps to keep the OS permissions correct, especially after a download, which could potentially alter them. Repairing permissions on a daily basis is a good idea to maintain OS efficiency. This can be done automatically with utilities such as Macaroni 2.1.1 http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/9633

How do I repair Permissions? I forgot!!

Just launch DiskUtility, select the system partition, hit the repair button, take a drink because it could take some time :D and then restart your Mac when it's done.

If you install the free utility Maintenance it's even easier.

Take care ;-)

BTW: Your Mac is doing his own maintenance (every weekend if he is running), but with this little tool you are always sure it's done :).
