As with any UNIX or UNIX based system, repairing permissions is a maintenance procedure which helps to keep the OS permissions correct, especially after a download, which could potentially alter them. Repairing permissions on a daily basis is a good idea to maintain OS efficiency. This can be done automatically with utilities such as Macaroni 2.1.1 http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/9633

Never used this one. But I'm sure it will be a good one too ;).

And about what you describe: "DITO" !
I agree with you.

Take care guys. Back to work now

I'm not all raring to go for .5...

I've never had an iTunes upgrade go so bad. Started in the morning when I started the update, I stuck around long enough for it to start eh install and left for the day, came back in the evening expecting a behaving iMac and got a whirling dervish that was on a bent...

Light blue screens, no booting, desktop and no cursors, no desktop, L-O-N-G pause while booting... Seemed hardly worth it.

Finally over an hour later and many holding down of the power buttons, I got the desktop and could start iTunes (while crossing fingers) and got the Genius note. I don't want Apple knowing what's in my library, although they probably already know most of it already by now.

I was wondering if I'd have to cut and run and reinstall Leopard from the DVD. OUCH!

Anyone else have issues with iTunes 8 and 'Quick'-time 7.5.5? I was sweating bullets there for a while... Has anyone had issues have with 10.5.5 installs or running yet??? Now I'm being cautious...

Is it possible that iTunes flipped out because I have like 5 movies in it from HandBrake?

You really shouldn't leave your computer unattended while it's installing updates or new software. The screensaver can interact, it may go to sleep or any number of things. iTunes 8 and 10.5.5 and the iPhone 2.1 software have been hits for Apple. Something may have happen while you weren't watching your Mac during the update.

Updated no problems here on my Macbook.

Dock does have a air of difference however, but that could be down to me just beginning to use OSX via the Dvi output on my Macbook to my 20' widescreen.

Blue dot is definately bigger or more visible. I always have trouble seeing them without reading glasses. Now I see them.

I Hate This Update>>>>>>>it Crashes My Computer Every 15 Mins Or So When I Am On Safari And Itunes . It Sucks.. Apple You Hear Me It Sucks

There's also Grab, a program in the Utilities folder that I didn't know about for the longest time. It's not as convenient as some keystrokes, but I can never remember those. It can capture a "Selection," "Window," "Screen," or "Timed Screen" with keystrokes. I use it to commandeer non-saveable photos from IMDb.com. It saves files as tiffs.

There is also a widget that is really nice, "Screenshot plus" to capture screens/windows.

you have a point but after suffering through a 2 hour update on Microstuff's Mojave-Vista, I figured that I've been 'updated out' for a while...

Yes, it took over 2 HOURS to install SP1 for Vista. GAAAAAA!!! Pith me now, AND, the worst part is that Windows Update STILL DOESN'T RUN!

Definitely 0% no change in the blue dot on the dock between .4 and .5

I saw some discussion on this on the thread before I updated and decided to test it out. See the (hopefully, it's my first attempt) attached images for confirmation.

Maybe there was some change to your colour settings, or you are now operating at full native resolution, but the intensity/size of the dot has not changed.

On a positive note...... I HEARD FROM OUR OPS DEPT OUR COMPANY MAY BE CONSIDERING MACS BY THE END OF THE YEAR.

Good to hear. Slightly OT, but going on what you said earlier about your cluttered work machine, and also your desire to quickly launch things other than apps from the dock, can I recommend a program like quicksilver to you. (http://guides.macrumors.com/Quicksilver) A few keystrokes is all that's needed to access almost any file/application on your machine. Spotlight seems to have taken on a lot of this functionality now, but in my opinion quicksilver is faster and more user friendly. Hope it helps.

Need for Speed Carbon does not work anymore on my MBP (2.4GHz)

Game starts but display goes to black. I can hear sounds but no picture.

How to uninstall 10.5.5?

if you have a Time Machine backup you can restart into your install DVD and restore a backup based on your version number.

So I just updated my Macbook software, this is my first macbook and first time i updated it

and now im stuck on this screen

CIMG1230.jpg

it seems as if its loading, i am able to move the mouse around and the blue loading bar is flickering, but for the past hour, the blue bar hasnt gone any further

is this normal? if not what should i do

I had the same problem last night when I was updating. It started downloading and after two minutes the above screen appeared and just stayed stuck for the next hour.

I turned off my computer and start running Software Update from the menu once again. The same thing happened.

I gave up, and downloaded the 10.5.5 combo instead (601 MB). Now it looks like 10.5.5 has been installed on my macbook. However, I have not noticed any drastic performance improvements in my daily usage. Graphics enhancements? I have to look out for that.

Did you leave it a decent length of time?, I noticed it almost looked stuck when installing but eventually it installed fine

I left it running for about 30 minutes, maybe I should have some more patience but normally it all goes fast and smooth.
After holding down the power button it restarted once (like normal during an update) and everything seemed fine. I checked and it did install 10.5.5. like mentioned in my previous reply; I had to restart my router, safari was terribly slow. I haven't noticed any improvements either. Maybe a clean install isn't a bad idea.

'Scuze me......

Anyone with CandyBar have the update, and did it break CandyBar or anything else (saft? I don't see how it could break saft, but.....I'll still ask)

First of all - good thinking about the test part. Second, I too noticed a major difference.

While the dot and every other pixel technically are the same in .4 and .5, they don't LOOK the same. I'm using a custom calibrated color profile for my iMac's screen, and after upgrading to .5 the colors were way off... Recalibrating should do the trick for me, I believe.

Nah. if my job did not include so much confidential info, I would show you my work windows desktop. kinda looks like this ad.

I am very thankful for the dock and expose.

sorry, although I sometimes dislike the arrogant tone of some replies, I must say your desktop (if it remotely looks like the one you're showing here) is ABSOLUTELY ridiculous! Never heard of organizing related docs in folders??? DENG! if you can actually find stuff on such a desktop your not half man half eagle, but half man, half machine!:D

By the way: HAS ANYONE NOTICED THAT ITUNES 8 DOESN'T REQUIRE CREDIT CARD INFORMATION FOR THE GENIUS FEATURE? IT SEEMS LIKE IT CAME WITH 10.5.5 AND WAS THE ONLY THING BLOCKING ME FROM USING GENIUS...THIS IS AWESOME! :)

You must've been a lucky winner, I updated and have Itunes 8, turned on Genius and yup...........those idiots ask me for credit card info....... so nothing to do with the update!

:apple:people, please never mind this STUPID credit card info asking everytime I want to go to Itunes, let me give you it if I actually PLAN on buying anything..it annoys the s***t out of me!

if you don't like it when people point out your mistakes and when you're just dead wrong then don't post at all.

Ok, guess it's a bit off topic too, but it isn't so much about pointing out mistakes if not that the tone sometimes can be somewhat offensive, I have found myself (as not such a techie) in doubt sometimes posting questions or comments because of some very arrogant/insulting replies I have read......

I can totally accept when I am wrong or mistaken(heck that's why I visit forums to learn new things), but to be made to look like a sh*thead..........no thanks! (mind you I do have a sense of humor, I actually liked the LSD remark someone made on Shervieux's findings.):D

New And Old Bugs After 10.5.5

iPhone 3g, 2.1 - Mac OS X 10.5.5
try to insert in a contact on iPhone this birthday date: 16 june 1969
it's not avaible !!!
only 1 june 1969
GREAT !!!
I think that these bugs in birthday calendar affect also syncronization with mobile me.
Many contacts (mostly with birthday date in it) suddelny disappear or loose many informations (for example a contact saved with multiple phone numbers suddenly loose all the phone number except one!)

10.5.5 not solve anything on MM syncronization issue.
3 months of totally nightmare !
Thanks Apple !!!

Ok, I lied. I posted way earlier about the emails syncing now from the Mac to Mobile Me to the iPhone when deleted? Nope. It worked two times and I haven't been able to replicate it since. Now I still have to go into Mail on the iPhone to 'sync' deleted messages in my inbox from my Mac.

Um, I am able to enter that date in a current contact. Strange.
