Ok, so I just had my first total system crash after updating to 10.5.5 last night. The screen saver froze at 5:55 for some reason (I know this because the clock on the screen saver said 5:55 when it was actually 9:30). I had to hold the power button down and manually restart. This is the first time I have had to do this (since leaving MS). Has anyone else noticed this issue and/or is it unrelated to the update?

Um, I am able to enter that date in a current contact. Strange.
it's really strange, i've double checked, i'm not able to do that.
I've also insert that date into address book and it was syncronize through mm on another mac BUT into iPhone it's NOT shown.
All these strange and unusual behaviour are really inconcepible and let me think of mm_iPhone and other products in the cloud totally acerb and unuseful for serious users.
Anyone had these problems ?

I had exactly the same thing: an overnight freeze. Then, Time Machine was broken, Disk Util couldn't fix everything, had to erase and start new.:(

I had the exact opposite

I was having those freezes UNTIL 5.5

Now I am free of them

Ok, well is there a way to go back to 10.5.4? I am also about to roll back my iPhone as well. It seems that all of those problems that people were having with 2.0.x I now have with 2.1.

iPhone 3g, 2.1 - Mac OS X 10.5.5
try to insert in a contact on iPhone this birthday date: 16 june 1969
it's not avaible !!!
only 1 june 1969
GREAT !!!
I think that these bugs in birthday calendar affect also syncronization with mobile me.
Many contacts (mostly with birthday date in it) suddelny disappear or loose many informations (for example a contact saved with multiple phone numbers suddenly loose all the phone number except one!)

10.5.5 not solve anything on MM syncronization issue.
3 months of totally nightmare !
Thanks Apple !!!

I had some problems too with Contacts and syncing. Check the metadata folder in the addressbook folder (Library) and if there is not the same number of records (cards) as indicated in the Address Book list + any Groups, then remove all folders inside Address Book to a safe place and sync down from MobileMe (Sync tab, Advanced). In my case there were many double, triple cards old & new etc. in short: a mess. Now it works again as a breeze.

I know this sucks a little as a solution, but the easiest way to fix this is (probably!) to kill your dock and rebuild it. To do that, go into Your user folder —> Library —> Preferences and delete the file titled 'com.apple.dock.plist'.

Then go to your Utilities folder (inside Applications) and type

Code:
killall Dock

Then drag your apps back into your dock. Another possible fix is to download and apply the 10.5.5 combo update, but my previous solution is both a lot faster and a lot more likely to work. :)

No offense but I don't see anything out of the ordinary other than your active apps dots being white. What else is different?

Edit: I do see weird shadows behind the dock icons. Any haxies installed?

10.5.5 completely messed up my WiFi connectivity, Mobile Me syncing, and Safari...etc.

ive "killed" my dock and problem was still there. after i have reset the macbook, the problem was gone. i hope it doesnt show anymore.

tnx guys.

P.S.
no haxies installed

I've gained the Airport issues that the seednotes suggest are fixed...

Curiouser and Curiouser...

I would recommend that both of you perform an Archive and Install with your original system DVDs, then update straight to 10.5.5. It's very likely that this will fix your issues.

Such a useful reply. I love the amount of detail, information on your problems you gave us.

So sorry...I was in class and PO'd and I quickly attempted at a rant.

At first, my Safari kept crashing and would not load pages and when attempting to load it was extremely slow.

iSync would just keep going when attempting to Sync Mobile Me and I would get an error saying Calendars and Bookmarks could not sync.

I restarted twice since and everything seems to be working now.

Very strange...

Great Trinity

I have iTunes 8, Leopard 10.5.5 and iPhone firmware 2.1 all installed and let me just say that they have all installed flawlessly and have definitely enriched my experience.

Been a Mac user for 10 years now and in my experience in helping friends with Mac problems, its usually a bad program installed or in some instances instead of a clean install on the OS, sometimes upgrades can cause problems as well.

The .5 update has been running smoothly so far on my MBP 2.33 C2D 3GB, backup'd no problems with Time Machine, have no connection problems with my Airport Extreme, and or running Adobe programs thus far.

Have not tested it with any games.
:)

I take back my perfect review of 10.5.5. It seems that WiFi connectivity (which gave me little trouble before) has gotten a little bit wonkier after the 10.5.5 update. Perhaps if I clear out all of my WiFi preferences and "known networks" and re-enter them?

My WiFi connection was also reacting very strange after the update. loading a page like this took more than a minute. Restarting the WiFi router worked for me. After that everything was back to normal.
Try a reset if possible

Found an answer

Until 10.5.5, I created PDFs from InDesign through printing via Distiller to the "Adobe PDF" driver, because this method seemed to create smaller files than did using the "Adobe PDF Presets" command (not to mention the Apple built-in capability for making PDFs).

However, since I got the 10.5.5 update, the former method seems hosed due to weirdness involving paper sizes (it will create a document with the right "page" size but the content's size isn't right). As a result, it appears the only option is to go into Adobe Acrobat Distiller, create new PDF settings which compress stuff (especially graphics) even more, and use "Adobe PDF Presets" after all.

On the Adobe Forums, others reported similar problems. This post had the answer that worked for me, so I'm passing it along to you:
From other issues with printing, try setting the page size to "Defined by Driver". This has helped with other issues, perhaps it will help with this.

My Finder keeps trying to launch and failing. The little dot below the dock icon flashes-up for about a second every 30-ish seconds.

Mail doesn't work either. Won't load. Crashes and issues this report. No idea what it means though.

Just repairing permissions with Maintenance (the dock still works OK). Suspect that I'll be doing a new install at the weekend :(

Forgot to mention. I did the Automatic Update install last night and everything seemed fine. Rebooted today and its broken

I have just tried the combo update. That didn't improve matters either.

95% certain I'll need to re-install. I might update to 10.5.4 and skip to 10.5.6 when it is released.

Still, I can't complain, this is my first major problem with a Mac in 11 years.

I'm sure the large majority of people will have no problems with this update. Nevertheless, after reading the comments from a number of users who have had weird issues, I think this is the first OS update in a long time that I'm not going to bother installing. 10.5.4 is essentially working perfectly for me now, I don't see anything in 10.5.5 that is a "must have," and I'm particularly sensitive to reports of problems with wifi connectivity and MobileMe syncing since I've had trouble with those previously.

Unfortunately, there is no painless way to downgrade OS versions.
The procedure is:
1) Backup all your user data (and anything you need - whole drive is best)
1.2) download the combo updater for version you wish
2) use your Mac installer DVD to boot up the Mac and install the original OS, if you use Archive-and-install, it tries to save most of your existing user settings
2.2) run repair disk from menu/diskutility prior to actual install
3) install the available OS updates to the level you desire (prior to the problematic one) use the combo updater mentioned to dl above.
4) make sure all your data is still there, or use your backup to replace anything missing.
5) for safety, remember to: only have keyboard and mouse plugged in during the install and update, run permissions repair after each major OS update (ie: after initial OSX install, after combo update), run disk repair from the dvd before you start this whole process, don't run any user apps while install or OS update is running, and after the system does its own automatic last reboot, do one more reboot where you reset PRAM by holding down Cmd-Opt-P-R till you hear three startup chimes, then release and should be good at last version.
Check your data and off you go... (this point would be good time to make a CCC clone backup for saving)
Yes, its a lot of work.
And, having said all that, i have done lots of system refreshes for self and others over the years. It happens. Best of luck and wishes.

I've had this problem off an on since I've owned my iMac--very sporatic--in fact it had not happened for over a month until yesterday--and my system had been up for 40 or so days. My iMac work up at 3AM Tuesday monring--ran time machine--and went back to sleep never to wake again. Just a blank screen until a gave it a hard reboot.

I usually wait a few days for updates but I just went ahead and updated yesterday. I'm sure this issue is not the same each time it happens--and is not the same problem on every Mac--maybe just some stray process out of control--who knows. I would like to think it won't happen again but I don't think I'd want to be quite that optimistic. Running fine now and woke up this morning without incident.
