this is me! I'm getting more and more fedup with macOS, Apple and whole AI hype... at least with Linux I have some semblance of control and can simply ignore AI crap and don't install it... luckily when switching to Mac I made sure I use interoperable software and services to avoid being locked-in so switching to Linux will be rather painless...
I spent too much on my Mac last year to just not use it and as I said, Linux just don't have the software I need. So I will stay with the Mac, just got to decide if I should update to sequoia or not. I suppose at some point I will have to

In extended use with a iMac and 16” MBP, macOS 15.3 betas right through yesterday’s update has been solid. No need to use Ai that can easily be disabled, if that bothers you.

I do not understand the hand wringing around this. If you don’t want it, turn it off - it’s already in the OS and has been for months now. Any additional download after being turned on will likely be reclaimed if needed.

But I’d note AI is coming for all your OSes. I suspect in a couple of years an OS shipping without AI built in will seem as crazy as an OS shipping without a web browser.

It is the having it enabled as default that bothers me, that Apple has ther cheek to think I want to use it and download the code onto my computer that will stay there, even if I disable AI.
i suppose it is right what people say, we don't own the software and companies can do what they like and seem to as well.

I can understand why a mate went to Linux a few years ago and have never gone back to using Windows or Mac.

This is the problem, we are being pushed to use this rubbish, like supermarkets in the U.K linking prices with loyalty cards, giving people little choice. How long will it before we will not be able to disable AI?

This fixed an issue I (and others on Apple Support Community) were having with disc burning. If I tried to burn an ISO to a CD-R using Disk Utility it would crash - same with right clicking an ISO in Finder and selecting "burn to disc" - it would relaunch the finder. I can burn discs again after upgrading to 15.3 !

The secret tip for you all trying to avoid Apple Intelligence w/ Apple Silicon
Boot from an external NVMe :D

I have two network TM backups, one physical TM backup on a SSD, one physical CCC backup on another SSD, and an old spinning drive I use about once per month as ‘extra’. Plus cloud backups of the most important files. I became this paranoid when I broke my iMac and that was exactly when the TM drive decided to give up the ghost. Since the iMac was broken anyway I took it apart, pulled out the hard drive, and that worked. But ever since I’ve kept multiple backups in multiple locations.

My TM backups do finish… as long as I don’t allow the laptop to sleep. So now when I am doing something, like now, I trigger the backup manually and don’t shut the laptop until the backup is finished. @turbineseaplane do you use power management on the Mac Mini? Wake for Network Access or whatever it’s called is broken now. If you don’t let it sleep for long enough (like three days in case of my first network TM backup… yay Sequoia) hopefully your backup eventually succeeds.

Mine are failing while I'm sitting here working and it tries to do them in the background

People who aren't into Emoji are missing the clear benefit. As Genmoji proves itself over the next version or two, we won't need to have a keyboard with hundreds (thousands?) of Emoji and we won't have that semi-annual "new emoji release!" because emojis will be generated on the fly, based on the conversation and suited specifically to every need.

TLDR; the end of Emoji keyboard is nigh.
Here are a few things I'd point out to counter the claim that the end is near for emoji.

  1. Genmoji, although I haven't used it (still on iOS 17) only works in messages - my understanding. If say Instagram/Facebook/etc. do not support this feature then Genmoji is only good via text, notes, etc. That is not a bad thing just pointing this out. I use emoji on Instagram/Facebook to bullet-point out listing or details in a post such as the check marks, etc.
  2. Emoji is unicode and it worldwide. I highly doubt the end is near https://home.unicode.org/emoji/
  3. On both my Mac and iPhone I type a word and the emoji appears to select or specially on the Mac I know the emoji I need to use so I type a word - say dog - and press Fn/
    the Globe key
-E and the emoji appears. https://support.apple.com/guide/mac-help/use-emoji-and-symbols-on-mac-mchlp1560/mac. I rarely, if ever, scroll through a list looking for an emoji. On the iPhone it is even easier. I have my most used emoji which is easy but I often type a word - example done - and the green check mark appears for me to tap
Not trying to be negative just stating a few things I've noticed and/or use daily. I do agree that from what I've read / seen Genmoji is a game changer. It does somewhat negate needing to wait until Apple includes the latest round of updates on iOS since you can pretty much create your own. Oh and I was told the Emoji movie was not good lol.

Just updated. Airdrop finally shows up on the Finder Window Sidebar. Tags are still messed up. I only have 3 color tags to show up but the items in there that are tagged the same color are no longer showing up. Thats not important to Apple Genmoji is #1 Priority for them. At least someone was kind enough to fix Airdrop on the sidebar. :p

If one takes a high level view here, what does it say that something like "GenMoji" garners any attention at all ... let alone being as prominently featured as it seems to be by Apple

I mean - my goodness - is this the Fischer Price kiddie operating system now?

It shows up after 15.3 is installed but when you reboot it will be gone again.

I can’t believe it. Well, actually I can. This is the Apple way. Quite ridiculous.

I was thinking the same. ‘Apple releases macOS with Genmoji!’ Whoa. Mind = blown. Life = changed. Are the Finder bugs changed? Nope. Is Time Machine working correctly? Also nope. (Sorry your backups fail ‘live’ :/ I made the mistake of starting mine and closing the lid of the laptop twice in the meantime…) BUT – GENMOJI. That is the important part!

I really wish Apple, if they’re going to do iterative updates, would stop releasing new OS versions every year regardless, just focus on what you’ve got and keep working on it. (And adding Genmoji, of course!)

As for disabling Apple Intelligence, I wish I could still type to Siri. Not that I actually do that, but I’d like the option without all the rest of the bloat. Put it in as Advanced setting and allow me to get rid of Image Playground etc., while keeping the one or two features I might use sometimes.

@navaira

Exactly my complaint -- screw around with Genmojis all you want as long as actual issues are getting fixed

Re: Time Machine

I'm trying again right now with an extra NVMe stick in an enclosure I had laying around to see if that makes any difference vs the SATA SSD I'd been using

Confirming. MBA M2 15". The same Time Machine error plaguing it has NOT BEEN FIXED! It just popped up on my wife's MBA M2. That machine is set to never sleep. Screen just turns off after 10 min and of course locks. Apple has not fixed this but gee Genmoji is #1 priority for them.
