This pic alone makes me want to take a baseball bat and bash Cook and Ive in the head for this level of design stupidity. WTF were they thinking?? It looks like a subliminal suggestion that Cook probably think is funny and clever when it really isn't. In fact, Microsoft is looking into having the Surface Pen be magnetically charged while attached to the tablet instead of. . .THAT reaming approach. Why Cook ok-ed this is beyond me. I would have forced Ive to re-think that approach or be fired. Period.

Macs are trucks. iPads are cars. There will always been a need for trucks, but it's overkill and inefficient for the mainstream. Plain and simple. Don't fight it.

I plan on my late 2013 MacBook Air lasting me for at least another 4+ years... But will this be my last Mac? Maybe. Probably. As it is now I do 75% of my computing on my iPhone and the last 25% is split between Mac and iPad. As iPad hardware/software beefs up, I can see my Mac dwindling even further.

But we don't have auto companies selling 3 year trucks a new or not selling trucks because they sell more cars and can't be bothered.

What's a computer? A RAW photo editor...

I don't mind the idea of an iPad replacing my computer; if it actually could.

If it were possible to download and edit RAW photo files from my camera and store and backup those files and edits, then an iPad could replace a computer for me, as yet it can not.

I'm sure many others feel the same about their own OSX bound applications.

The annoying thing is, it probably could if Apple cared about these kinds of use cases for their tools toys, just look at the Surface Pro (sure I'll get castigated for that one).

Once my 2011 15" MBP dies, I'm getting a Surface Pro. I'll miss using my Mac for iMessage, but unless Apple does a massive course correction I can't justify getting another Mac. I'll have to live with some downsides, but enough is enough. I can't reward Apple for a product with serious downsides.

Here's a dose of reality. For the vast majority of home and casual users, an iPad is perfect. I'm a multimedia designer and use a high end iMac at work. At home I use my iPad Pro 99 percent of the time. Apple doesn't want to get rid of the Mac. It still has its uses. But the iPad is simply better and quicker with certain things. With iPad Pro, the screen blows any Mac laptop out of the water with viewing angle and doesn't get hot when watching movies. If you need tons of multitasking , get a Mac and be happy. But many of us just don't need it anymore for home use.

Couldn't agree more - in fact odds are you will have both. I have an iPad Pro and I bring it as an extension of or complement to my Mac for the road - not a replacement.

I have an iPad Pro. I also have a MacBook Pro, a MacBook Air, and an iPod Touch. I play games and draw pictures on the iPad Pro. Then I have to get back to work. I use my Mac's for that because they have ports and a keyboard that is stable and easy to type on. And I don't know what I'd do without my mouse. That's what a computer is, Tim.

of course they won't quit the mac / macOS product line, i think the reason of the long wait, is that a redesign is on its way - and if they update them too close to that launch, no one will buy the new ones.

I think this will be the year of mac, now that the iPhone won't be that exciting.
Or maybe Tim just wants to sell iPads that can double as phones. We don't need no stinking laptops!.....hahahaha

Apple has jumped the shark. The kids that run it now apparently think "thiner", "lighter" equipment, and crap like "Siri" added to Mac OS are priorities? I have purchased about 20 new top-of-the-line Macs over the years and never paid any attention to their size or weight and never lusted for a machine that would talk back to me! I have not purchased any new Mac Pros or MacBooks since 2012 and the current plan is to start buying "Used" Macs for the first time due to the newer offerings.

I did recently purchase a new iPad Pro 12.9", but it is really just a big iPhone that I can type and draw on - so I find myself using it about 2% of the time. It is really a cool device, but more of a consumer "novelty" item. I "create" content on Macs for a living and scribbling with my fingers all over a filthy screen just does not cut it. Honestly, if I had it to do over I would not buy it at all (for me) - I don't see a touch device ever replacing my MacPro workflow.

Dump the Trashcan Mac Pro and return to a "real" pro device with internal upgradability and expandability. Keep the iPads for the consumers that want to look down at a screen all day long and thump with their fingers.

Maybe Apple is thinking to convert as many people as they can away from macs because they figured those who need a full computer would buy one anyway.

No. It's a tactic they're using to distract people into focusing on iOS and hide the truth about the lack of iMac/Macbook updates. Tim should have been fired a long time ago and replaced with someone from the outside who has the balls to dump Intel and go somewhere else. It's not entirely about Intel but it's part of the problem.

Is all that you can't say
Years gone by and still
FLOPs don't come easily
Like sorry like sorry

Forgive me
Is all that you can't say
Years gone by and still
FLOPs don't come easily
Like forgive me forgive me

But you can say baby
Baby can I hold you tonight
Maybe if I gave, the right hardware
At the right time you'd be mine

I love you
Is all that you can't say
Years gone by and still
FLOPs don't come easily
Like I love you I hate you

Yeah, no --- Apple don't want you buying none of that 3rd party stuff to upgrade your Mac stuff --- NOPE, no way --- their way or the highway.

I believe a lot of the delay contributed to the macbook pro is due to the fact that iPad sales kept dropping. Apple willingly sacrificed the macbook pro and launched the stupid iPad Pro to save the iPad line. They're pushing the iPad as the best computer replacement. A computer is something my iOS devices plug in to.

Oh. why is Apple holding out though? They can upgrade whenever they want.

Wait until you go freelance or independent away from your job. You'll want an iMac for home studio use or laptop for mobility. iPad Pro is useful in certain ways for conceptualization with the Pencil BUT for high resolution or print based work, a desktop computer is the best way to go. I have'nt gotten an iPad Pro or Surface Pro 4 yet, but I'm leaning towards the latter because I do illustration work digitally and work with layers in high res on Manga Studio, Photoshop or Illustrator. The Surface Pro will handle the file sizes perfectly with layers intact. iPad Pro? Doubtful.

It's a complex situation but they could have upgraded a year ago. The problem is, I think, they're focusing too much on iOS and especially the Watch which took them about 4-5 years to make. Competitors are making their PCs cheaper with the latest components and Apple is somewhat overcharging for components that are not quite up to date. That's a problem.

Going premium is biting them in the a$$.

Yeah maybe Apple knows people don't have money to buy the new watch, new iPad, and new MacBooks

So they're letting people buy up the watch or new iPad, or both, and then when people save up enough money again they'll release the new macs

So, The iPad Pro will replace my MacBook Pro? Will I ever see a refreshed MacBook Pro?

What's a computer?

Well may Apple ask. I fear they've forgotten.

It pains me to see Apple fall from grace. I used to be such an Apple fan with Steve at the helm. He made the company into a precious jewel. Now, it has been neglected. The jewel has dulled. The spark has gone. The glint of Jobs' eye has been replaced by the vacuous snarky cynicism of the celebrity-obsessed staff remnants.

Oh for someone to seize the company by the reins and sack the lot of them. Apple are incapable of stopping the deathly rot that God set in motion on that fateful day, October 5th, 2011.

As the echo of a devoted million wail in the wind, yet will a phoenix rise from the ashes of the happy past. The sun has set on Apple. May it rise to reveal a new form through the prism of Steve Jobs.
