I can certainly imagine Apple doing this. This is the sort of arbitrary, monkey-with-something thing they do. Going out of their way to hobble something so as to create “tiers” of performance or whatever.

No real impact on my day-to-day existence, it’s just weird that this is where they allocate their design and engineering efforts.

I don’t know…

Cable standards and USB are already a dumpster fire. Went into a "PC Builder" computer store yesterday. Tried and failed to buy a 6ft Thunderbolt 4 cable. Lots of cables labelled as "high power" or "high speed" yet they are limited to 480mbps data transfer (USB 2). The USB Forum has made the problem worse not better with their insane naming schemes. If Apple's naming/certification of its own standards makes it easier to buy a cable that will work best then I am all for it.

That would be incredibly scummy of Apple... but they've done worse than this in the past. Glad the fanboys in this thread aren't having any of this BS. Finally something they see as intolerable.

waiting for all the Apple apologists who have been crying about Lightning e-waste to step in.

as others said, i don’t think it’ll happen, but i wouldn’t be shocked if it did.

Hmm...
iPhone 15 - usb 2.0
iPhone 15 pro - usb 3.0
iPhone 15 ultra - thunderbolt transfer speeds? 🤔
My iMac G4 from 2003 (!!!) had USB 2.0 and Apple sold it like a great thing. But wait for it… my MacBook Pro from 2012 (!!!!!!) has USB 3.0. How anyone can accept a phone having slower physical connectivity than a 10-year-old computer, when its processor and wireless modules are clearly faster, is beyond me. Apple only does this to upsell people who might otherwise want to use the cheaper iPhone as a budget camera. 🤷‍♂️

Will they still be able to charge a fee for MFi certification? I assume so. Which means all of the people who whined that Apple wouldn't abandon lightning because of the MFi fees were as predicted...wrong, wrong, wrong.

How about engineering a way to protect the iPhone from faulty cables rather than trying to identify cable that give Apple a cut of the profits 🤔
Uh, that's the same thing.

The MFi program is exactly that. And it carries a nominal fee so that it is not exploited by counterfits.

Does anyone know if the Samsung Galaxy S series phones (e.g. S22 or S23) have the same limitations and if they do, do they vary by model? Making the USB C port support based on model and adding some sort of verification that could limit charging speeds etc. is completely and utterly dumb. Just give me either full USB support or USB support and TB 4 with PD charging standard and we should we good, but this rumor of added Apple crap is nonsense. Apple please stop it.

What? How one type of cable which can be interchangeable relates to number of outlets in the house? 🤦‍♂️
It’s a joke … and explaining jokes is death. But assuming someone is limited to one outlet I can see how they might only have one cable so that’s a win. But most people don’t have one cable they charge all their devices with even if interchangeable because they live in houses and the iPad goes somewhere and the phone somewhere and they might charge them all simultaneously at night, etc SO it makes no difference to the environment because the number of cables they have doesn’t change. Just I was just riffing it’s no big deal. None of this makes a bit of difference the “environment” thats all just wishes and unicorn dust.

that's right Anker, and Belkin .....not good examples of this MFI program sadly..
I do understand your statement.......... is that just because it has the MFi program, doesn't mean the quality is any better than the Apple brand.

Makes no sense. The EU is forcing Apple to switch from lightning to USB-C for a reason. If Apple did this, it would be a switch in name only. The EU would not accept this.
Yes they might meet and force apple to comply in by 2027 and for all we know the rest of the world has started using USBD.

I wish Apple would just develop the portless iPhone. I use wireless CarPlay via a dongle from Amazon and only charge wirelessly. Going portless would push the auto industry as well as third party designers to push their product designs. We are ready for the next iteration and can stop hanging back in the time of cords.
I honestly don't want a "portless" phone. I like options, especially in terms of charging. Not every place is going to have a magsafe compatible setup (say, airports) and having a cable with a regular USB-C interface and a small charging plug to the wall outlet has saved me in a pinch more than once.
