I absolutely could see them doing something like this.
This matters to so few people I cannot imagine it motivates many upsales. Here people care but normal people have never thought about the transfer speed of their ports.

Come on people, did anyone honestly believe Apple would not do something like this? It is Apple's way of making sure that people still purchase a dedicated Apple cable to unlock the higher usb speeds. Use a commonly available usb-c cable and get lower usb-c speeds but purchase a special Apple usb-c cable to unlock the higher speeds. as others have pointed out, I do not think the EU is going to like it or even accept it.

You should be able to plug a USB-C to HDMI into your iPhone and TV and watch any video apps on your TV in IDENTICAL quality to how it’s streamed to a TV. 4K, HDR, and not blocking Netflix or other apps.
isn’t that a restriction of Netflix itself? Not Apple

I’m seriously thinking of getting a iPhone 14 Pro Max instead when the iPhone 15 series launches. There might be some transitional issues with USB C over the next two years and I’d rather wait it out.

huh. You going to have separate cables for iPhone and iPad/Macbooks instead of just one unified cable for all tablets, laptops and phones? You really can't see (not just) environmental benefit here?
I already had that when they were all Lightning and other stuff. Are there people that have one cable they charge for every device? What do they do if need to charge 2 at a time. No matter what connector I will stall have cables and chargers for every device because they go in different locations.

But you are correct … I didn’t see it because I didn’t remember there were people in houses with only one outlet😂.

Limiting it to USB2 speeds? I wouldn't care.

Any nonsense beyond that and I will find out how long my XR last. If it gets unbearable I might even switch to Android before buying anything that isn't proper USB-C.

In reality it would be a pretty suicidal move by Apple, but one never knows....

Im also not sure they can call it a USBC port if its not operable with other USBC accessories, that would depend on the USBC standards body.
USBC is a port, not a data transfer standard.

EU law requires USBC charging, though nothing I've seen requires supporting Power Delivery standards.

Article speculates "it is possible that Apple could limit features like fast charging and high-speed data transfer to Apple and MFi-certified cables" -- as such were Apple to not support Power Delivery or high speed data with all devices/cables, they would seemingly remain in compliance with the EU mandate.

This is however just a rumor and likely just clickbait. We shall see what the reality is in time.

What? How one type of cable which can be interchangeable relates to number of outlets in the house? 🤦‍♂️

Good grief, heavens above I should accidentally 'side charge' my phone instead of doing it the approved way, bad enough with all these dangerous side loading app out there as it is, glad Apples got my back on this one, way to go Apple

It can't be true, considering new ipads has real usb-c ports
I bought the M2 iPad Pro and was surprised to find that the video out capabilities of its USB-C port are inferior to the Lightning port on a much older 2018 IPP. Apple is intentionally restricting the functionality of these ports for some reason, perhaps complaints from studios, YouTube?

I guess they reviewed the full EU law with their lawyers and determined that nothing prevented their phones to have an USB-C port that only works with Apple USB-C cables... brilliant workaround. Mildly infuriating but gg Apple if true... I guess it will take another decade for Brussels to outlaw this...

How's that one unified cable gonna charge all my devices at the same time?
I wont. But you don't need to take care of multiple cable types for multiple devices and so you wouldn't need to buy multiple cable types to work, home, car etc. Instead of just one type of cable which you can share (at home for instance). If you lose certain type of cable, you would have to buy just this exact type again, instead of using unified type which you certainly already have lying around already (because it can be used for any device, you use).

The EU’s mandate is about charging ports and says nothing about data. You will be able to charge an iPhone with any USB-C cable. Certain data features may be unavailable without a MFi cable.

I don't see what the EU has to do with this, as long as it charges in some way (5W way for exemple) with a standard USB-C cable then it's a problem (or not) for Apple customers to deal with.

It's kind of funny all the talk about the EU is this and that and when any company comes up with something absurd then it's the "the EU will get them" talk.

Although I honestly believe that Apple have all the morality of Jack the Ripper and that this report is faintly believable, I speculate that it's merely (like my own opinion) speculation... I think even Apple would balk at the repercussions of doing this, although with 100% certainty they have discussed it and created dozens of Excel (lol) charts to calculate the cost benefits vs liabilities.

Also, I have a free blob of KY for the sad, sad fanbois on here supporting Apple and denigrating the EU. What a bunch of jokers.

p.s. Luis Rossman would have an embolism if this came to pass.

I doubt it. The don’t do this in the iPads like the article points out. It would be a terrible move to implement this in the iPhone. this would kind of defeat the entire purpose of having usb-c. Are they so eager to get an extra 30 from every customer?
They aren't switching to usb c out of the kindness of their heart or some egalitarianism. They're switching to usb c because the EU is forcing them too.

The rumor declares that Apple has developed its own variant of USB-C for this year's ‌iPhone 15‌ lineup and comes from a user who claims to be an integrated circuit expert with 25 years of experience working on Intel's Pentium processors.

Hello.

I am an internationaly reknown expert in rumors as well as a PhD Doctor in Rumor Sciences, and I say this is bull***t.

All rumors of course, but this seems like an Apple thing to do. I want my iPhone to act like my iPad - plug it into a hub for hdmi, aux, etc. If I can’t do this then I’ll keep my iPhone 12 another year or two until has this function. Save me some money then, Apple.
