I can't see the EU liking this approach if true
I believe only USB-C charging is required. I can totally see apple throttling the charging rate and disallow all the other minimum USB features. You'll be able to charge your phone via USB-C alright, just very slowly. Buy an Apple power brick and Apple cables (yes, plural, they won't last).

The EU will certainly love Apple basically skirting the requirements making the reasoning for them useless. I’m guessing Apple will get smacked over this if true.
If I'm not mistaken, the requirement is USB-C. Nothing about the capabilities of it. Which is exactly why requiring USB-C isn't the positive people think it is. They mandate the cable but nothing about what those cables can/should do. USB-C ITSELF isn't standardized. I have a bunch of USB-C cables in my house. Same cable types...plenty of different capabilities.

Love all the freaking out and teeth-gnashing here. Apple currently sells their own iPhone cables and they license other manufacturers' accessories that work with iPhones too. Go to Amazon, you can buy more non-Apple iPhone-ready cables than you can carry.

Sure, if you buy a cable for $1 at the 7-11 checkout while you get your lottery tickets, you're going to get the "unsupported device" warning. You get what you pay for.

This isn't going to change. Legit USB-C cables will be out there, and not all the money is going right into Apple's pocket. It's going to be exactly like it is today, with a different connector at the end of the cable.

Yeah, never happened before, like the Magic Mouse having the charging port on the bottom, or the 2018 MBA heatsink designed to make the fan spin without cooling the CPU, or the iPad 10 pencil thing, or the studio display having a dedicated CPU for the webcam when the M-series inside the Mac could do the same tasks in a better way, or the power cord on the very same Studio Display being fixed... and I could go on
Y u do dis Apple? 🤷🏻‍♂️

I don’t know about you but my laptop USBC cable is located in one place for charging the laptop, my iPad USBC cable is located in another place for charging the iPad and my iPhone Lightning cable is somewhere else. Changing the lightning cable to USBC does not change anything from an environmental or convenience perspective.
Yeah I don't understand this whole "using the same cable" argument that people use as a "pro" of this forced change. Don't know about anyone else, but I don't charge my devices one at a time, so all of my devices using USB-C changes absolutely nothing. I still need a cable for my laptop, my phone, and my iPad. Whether my devices are all USB-C, or two USB-C and one lightning...I STILL need three cables. Traveling...same thing. Still going to need more than one cable.

So to me, personally...all of my devices using the same cable type...is NOT a selling point. It doesn't even solve an inconvenience. For my own usage (anecdotal, blah blah blah)...I still need three cables, no matter what type they are.

Not only would this be unwise of Apple, I don't even think it's possible.

What a silly rumour.

I once had a Sony music system. Selected for having some USB (A) plug at the front, which was a new feature back then. However without telling Sony had decided to only connect Sony products via this USB plug. It was the final Sony product I have bought until today.
I hope Apple doesn't go the same route especially as the EU is upset about any walled garden concepts already.

If they are forcing you to buy special cables for fast charging anyway why would they omit the feature from non pro iphone 15's..... seems like lost revenue potential. just dont include the cable with that feature with the phone

For those of you who are hoping that this is not true, as a long term Apple customer I can assure you that it is. This is exactly what they have done on every interface port that they have ever invented. Going back all the way to the old thirty pin back with the original iPod. Absolutely zero doubt that they will continue to do this for each interface they create.

💯 percent spot on. And for those who don’t pay attention or remember, the push for using only apple chargers started when people were electrocuting themselves with the chargers in China. Which, of course were made in China, and not by Apple.

Sure, destroy the planet faster by building devices that won’t work with industry standards and going all out middle finger EU while pissing off a Big chunk of customer base. Apple clearly believe they are far too big to fail and can suck up repeatedly without consequences.

Now that I’m thinking about it, I’m in firm belief that usb 2.0 speed of usb-c will be a reality. If Apple Is more courageous, they will implement usb 1.1 speed on usb-c port. Yes, about 1400KB/s transfer speed. Can’t wait to see that happens.

As has been mentioned on here before...the standard is the USB-C CABLE for charging. There's nothing in the rules about the capabilities of those cables past the charging. Take a trip to the store and you'll find plenty of USB-C cables with plenty of differences in terms of capabilities.

Petty? Absolutely. Against the rules? Nope.

isn’t that a restriction of Netflix itself? Not Apple
No, it’s an Apple restriction. Netflix can’t stop screen mirroring. They can stop Airplay. Apple uses Airplay through the Lightning to HDMI adapter, which is a pathetically bad standard which is capped at 1080p in 2023 despite your iPhone having been capable of 4K video recording for years now.

Yep. People on here (and the EU) wanted USB-C. And they're getting it. This should be a good example of why people should cover all their bases 😂

"Oh, you want a standard charging cable? No specifics about anything other than the fact that it has to be able to be used for charging? Perfect, here you go!" People are getting exactly what they asked for and absolutely nothing more.

This rumor is serving its primary function of being talked about and allowing haters to hate.
