like the Magic Mouse having the charging port on the bottom
I've used the MM with the bottom charging port for years and it's never been a thing I think about. First, a charge lasts a crazy amount of time. Second, if it dies (b/c I've ignored the warnings), I plug it in, make some coffee, use the restroom and then it's good for the rest of the day.

I guess they could have moved it to the side, but it wouldn't have been any easier to use while charging. And, the port would have been right where I rest my fingers, making it uncomfortable.

Now, if you want to complain about it being too low to the desk there are arguments to be made.

If the speeds are limited to USB 2.0 that would be a jump the shark moment for Apple. Seriously this phone outputs 6GB a minute ProRes video and there is no solid way to move data quickly off device.

Sometimes I'm shocked at Apples methods, is it really hard to throw a Thunderbolt controller on a A16?

It's weird to even have something so backwards you have to even think about that... for years my mouse just charges off the pad. Don't even have to think about it.

My BT mouse has the port on the front, and it's just like using a wired one. I just wish the app could warn you before 5%. Just like the MM, it lasts a while, so I could just charge it overnight or while at work once in a while.

This probably part of the iPhone usbc drama. When best time for apple to upgrade knowing playing with cables and port speeds between models. Can see why they want iPhone last device to upgrade.

That would be true, but if you'd read again what I wrote this was a vanilla 5V-only charger and a phone accepting 5V only. This was pre-QC and pre-PD. This was deliberate.
If you’re talking about the old 5w bricks that were ubiquitous I have literally at least a dozen around the house, mostly powering raspberry pis. They were solid chargers that have had teardowns done, like, everywhere, for a decade and more. I absolutely promise you that there is no deliberate built in mechanism to prevent charging samsung phones

For me the physical port alone is worth it. It already charges fast enough with any usb-c charger.
EU mandates USB-PD compatibility only. Meaning on the data side the oem are free to do what they want. EU allows oem’s to support faster charging speeds using proprietary tech, but they must support the latest USB-PD too.

People need to understand that there is only one way to hack into iPhone, that is by using lightning cable.
So Apple will do everything to limit access to that path to hackers.

That would be incredibly scummy of Apple... but they've done worse than this in the past. Glad the fanboys in this thread aren't having any of this BS. Finally something they see as intolerable.

I support Apple 100% and I hope they're doing it.

Knowing tens of millions of technical people will become so angry is worth the extra cost for buying new cables.

waiting for all the Apple apologists who have been crying about Lightning e-waste to step in.

as others said, i don’t think it’ll happen, but i wouldn’t be shocked if it did.

Tens of millions of technical people, even those not using an iPhone, would become so angry if Apple did it.

It's worth generating some more e-waste, carbon footprint and environmental damage to experience this.

i'm not a fan of wireless charging, it heats up my phone like crazy and i have watched my iphone battery capacity dropped from 99% to 93% in 2 months.
I used MagSafe on my iPhone 12 for charging at night. When I checked on battery health before trade-in, it was significantly worse after a year of use (I think around 89% or so) than any previous iPhone I used. I went back to charging via cable after that. I also think that while Apple likely wanted to go wireless at one point, wireless tech hasn't progressed very much and I suspect they have delayed any plans with going fully portless. Also there's the issue of CarPlay, or even just using your phone with an older car with no display, which would have to be addressed with adapters or some such thing.

I wish Apple would just develop the portless iPhone. I use wireless CarPlay via a dongle from Amazon and only charge wirelessly. Going portless would push the auto industry as well as third party designers to push their product designs. We are ready for the next iteration and can stop hanging back in the time of cords.

What kind of dongle do you need for wireless CarPlay? All iPhones already support it, but the car system needs to offer it. Does the dongle itself actually provide the wireless CarPlay support on the car side?

EDIT: Okay, I get it. Cars that already have CarPlay support can be upgraded with that dongle to allow for wireless connections to the same system. Got it.

This is a “rumor” — it is unsubstantiated and doubtful. Unless you are an engineer on the iPhone team, how could you possibly know for sure? Also, how many different types of usb-c cables could one possibly need to connect to an iPhone? I would guess 99% of owners will probably use the one supplied with the phone.

I've got multiple chargers all over my home and then there's my car. My Apple-supplied cables are in the minority.

Does this potential issue primarily affect the CABLE, or does it also affect the CHARGER? I'm going to be real pissed if all the new Anker chargers I purchased aren't going to work w/ the new iPhone.

The point of the EU legislation is that all phones can be charged with USB-C. Your Anker charger will be fine. It's unknown at this point what additional benefit this custom port would give.

I doubt it. The don’t do this in the iPads like the article points out. It would be a terrible move to implement this in the iPhone. this would kind of defeat the entire purpose of having usb-c. Are they so eager to get an extra 30 from every customer?
The fanboys will thank apple. Gimps.
