Yet, Xiaomi and a raft of other Chinese companies have managed to create and deliver cars. And pretty good ones as well. I especially like the ones from the Geely stable.

Samsung have a military division; they manufacture naval ships, tanks and artillery.

The fact that apple couldn't make a car or a wireless charging mat is actually pretty hilarious.

It’s not 2014 anymore mate.

While iPhone is clearly their biggest revenue apple is no longer centered solely around iPhone especially since there is a slump in iPhone sales.

These days apple is putting more focus on its other very successful products so they aren’t solely dependent on iPhone. Which is intelligent.

Apple spent a decade on car and how much money only to realize nobody asked for that.

Apple's been trying to diversify away from just phones for years.
Yet it still remains their golden goose. Foldables is just the next step to keep that gravy train going.

Yeah again I’m glad that you think that apple is solely focused on iPhones. And foldables certainly aren’t going to do much (like on android). Let me say it again since you seem to refuse to get it

“Nobody excerpt vocal minority iOS users who also enjoy android (for whatever reason I do not get) or those who constantly peruse forums like this is demanding this”

It is what it is.

The smartest among us? That sounds a bit elitist.
Furthermore people come into the stores to ask if their phones can do what this phone they heard can do all the time.

When I unfortunately sold android and thought android was an actual Os, there’s a reason why every android Phone was referred to as a droid even though they were using an Lg or Sony. People equated Verizon’s droid campaign with all androids.

Before the iPhone 6 came out ppl were wanting and asking for a bigger iPhone because they saw their friends with bigger devices.

Nobody is coming into apple stores or Oems asking when is apple doing a foldable? Most iOS users see android foldables as COOL but in passing not because they are demanding it.

My friend saw my z flip and said that looks cool but he’d never use it because it was android (smart man) and he didn’t really see the point of it because it seemed fragile

Same with emulators. RCS. That’s a vocal minority demanding it. Not the everyday apple consumer aka the majority of apple users. Just because you on a forum who cares about this and have your fellow friends hype it up doesn’t mean that’s what the market wants.

I can go onto a windows phone subreddit now and find a bunch of ppl who will tell you windows phone needs to come back. Probably more so than an iPhone foldable lol. But they aren’t the market. They would be loud fanatics.

Exhibit a.

Apple users are far more rigid and conservative in how much change they will accept so no as of today the market is not demanding foldables.

Android foldables aren’t even outselling slabs and the top android phones sold aren’t even high end phones lmao.

It’s their budget phone. The market has spoken then. They clearly want cheap laggy android.
I think cost is a major reason why foldables can't outsell slab phones even if foldable are just as reliable.

I mean foldables are not just as reliable. And price isn’t exactly an issue when there are some decently priced foldable.

It’s simply a gimmick that no one presently wants except enthusiast.

Apple Car failed because it was too ambitious and a lot of changes in direction. The other companies just wanted a conventional EV.

Which foldable that are decently priced besides possibly the OnePlus Open at $1700. The Chinese ones are cheaper locally in China but global versions are still $2000+, and it's a lot more expensive outside of the US.

Can you define your definition of a gimmick? Why do things foldable phones are a gimmick?

A gimmick? A cool factor that is trendy but overall has no added benefit for the greater good.

See 3d phones. They came and they were out for about the same amount of time and they faded away. Nobody cared outside of a small group.

See social media phones. Android in the early days with htc sense and moto blur. Microsoft with the ill fated kin. And later windows phone 7. That was gimmicky and they quickly went away after about 5-6 years. Nobody cared outside of a small group.

The Xperia play. Another gimmicky phone. A PlayStation phone running android. It sounded cool but then at the same time song already had the psp and you can more or less already play PlayStation games on better phones. You only got the Xperia play because you were a true Sony fan.

Gimmicks aren’t necessarily bad. But I hate when ppl act as if they are the future. As it stands foldables aren’t the future. That could change but as of now they are a niche gimmick.

It’s like Chromebooks. Chromebook’s were supposed to kill windows by now and as we see windows is just fine.

Just like netbooks before it.

And as far as foldable, if someone wants a foldable the galaxy flips usually go down in orifebfast and the Motorola Razr exist.

Android only is popular because it’s cheap so if people don’t want to buy entry or mid range foldables that should tell you something.

Nope. Apple car failed because while the potential is there, most ppl don’t care about them now.

Normal consumers aren’t dying to buy an ev. People already are anti ai as it is and self check out. Self driving or ev isn’t there yet.

Apple ran into technical issues that even Apple could not overcome based on their visions for the Apple Car. It has nothing to do with most people "don't care" because the technology to enable such visions simply didn't exist, and it would take decades and billions of dollars to attempt FSD similar to Tesla.

And even Tesla has so far not delivered on the FSD promise. Even Xiaomi is able to design and produce EV because their vision didn't rely on FSD that can do point-to-point fully driverless.

To me I just think the idea of a foldable phone is just dumb. We have already had our flip phones back in the day. Why go backwards? I personally like the iPhone just the way it is. Of course I want the latest and greatest like a lot of other people, but I do not understand the concept of a foldable phone. Just to save space maybe? And the visible crease that everybody tends to talk about just throws me way off.

Foldable phones are far from a gimmick. Unlike the gimmick such as the Rabbit R1, they offer a larger, more useful screen when unfolded. This larger screen enhances experiences with gaming, video content, web browsing, and everyday apps, making it broadly beneficial.

Unlike 3D phones and TVs, which depend on scarce 3D content, foldable phones have no such limitation. They fit comfortably in a pocket and expand when needed, perfect for relaxing at a coffee shop, sharing pictures, or watching a game while web browsing on the side.

Foldable phones, unlike limited-function Xperia phones, offer an immersive gaming experience and broader functionality. It can even run emulators that have an even wider access to games.

Comparing foldable phones to Chromebooks is meaningless. Chromebooks don't fit in pockets or expand as needed. No one claims foldable phones will replace slab phones; they are simply another option. Unlike niche devices that require specific content or apps, foldable phones offer greater flexibility with their larger screens, making browsing the web, watching videos, viewing photos, gaming, and consuming social apps more immersive.

Affordable Android phones are essential for billions who can't afford expensive iPhones. The high cost of foldable phones, such as the Z Fold 6, doesn't diminish their value. There's no correlation between the availability of cheap Android phones and the sales of foldable phones.

Honor Magic V3: Enough said for me all the while being only 1 mm thicker and also 5 grams heavier than the iPhone 15 Pro Max all with a 5100 mAh battery. I genuinely understand the concerns about reliability for a very expensive consumer electronics. However, I strongly disagree with the "gimmick" that gets thrown around. The idea is incredibly simple, and it gets better with each generation of foldable phones. For Apple, it's not a question of if, but when.

  • Flip phone: When closed, it halves in length. Despite being twice as thick, I've found it more comfortable, even with small jean pockets. The length and width of the S24U and iPhone 15PM, for example, can cause more discomfort than the Z Flip 5 flip. The classic flip phones didn't have a large screen when unfolded. These new flip phones will get thinner with each generation.
  • Foldable phone: It's like having an iPad Mini 6 in your pocket. I really liked using the Z Fold 4, Pixel Fold, and OnePlus Open, with the OnePlus Open being my favorite. I didn't keep any due to the price. While reliability is a valid concern, the larger screen is incredibly useful.
  • Crease: The crease on the Z Fold 4 was the most noticeable, but after a few days, it becomes unnoticeable, much like the iPhone notch and dynamic island. The user experience is much more immersive for all apps.

You mean ignoring their fragility and that god awful crease in most of them.

I compared Chromebooks to foldables because they were supposed to be the be all end of all. It has nothing to do with pocket ability

As of right now they are gimmicks . Glad you like them but it’s a gimmick. And add on a terrible operating system.

I even mentioned that reliability is a genuine concern, especially for something so expensive. However, the way you characterize it makes it seem like there's a 100% failure rate. I did not ignore that concern, but that alone does not make it a gimmick. If you are extremely concerned, you can buy accidental damage insurance, like AppleCare+.

Which foldable phones have you used daily for 10+ days? The crease is like the notch after a few days; it never bothered me. I enjoy the giant screen for everything.

You claimed that Chromebooks are the end-all and be-all. Who else has made these claims? It's like claiming that MacBooks are the end-all and be-all, yet MacBook units shipped worldwide in 2023 were about 22 million, while Chromebooks were 19 million in 2022, and foldable phones were 18 million in 2023. Again, no one claimed that foldables are the end-all and be-all.

I prefer Android because it allows split-screen, which the iPhone doesn't. I can download and upload photos in the background, block ads globally for all browsers, and much more that fits my needs. I can do all of this on my OnePlus 12 for $700, with excellent battery life and the ability to recharge from 0 to 50% in less than 15 minutes. Android on a foldable phone is even better.

That's exactly my point though. I agree entirely that folding is a gimmick with limited real world applications.

People are at a point with their iphones where they can't find any compelling reason to upgrade. Their phones are lasting longer; and they see the latest looks roughly the same as what their current 12/13/14/15 looks like and does about the same; so they don't upgrade and hold onto thier phones another year hoping for a compelling reason. They want something new.

A folding iphone ticks that box. Is it better? probably not. But apple will give it some stupid name like the "iphone transform", market the crap out of it with bright colourful billboards about how a folding phone will "transform "your life. I mean look at how much they hyped dynamic island lol.

And people will lap it up and buy it in record numbers exactly because it's suitably different from the same phone they've been using the last 4-5 years.

I swear I saw a foldable iPhone in the wild last Summer in NY at a concert. Full iOS icons/camera/look but foldable. Was in front of me recording the band- blocking my view so I got a good look ha.

Maybe an Honor foldable?

MagicOs looks like an iOS clone.

I actually own a galaxy z flip unfortunately.

My roommate works for the same telecom I work for and he won a pixel fold and I used that nearly 3 weeks.

I even have used the surface duo (one of the first foldables when they were released) and I used to regularly sell these products myself so I’m quite familiar with all form factors. Price points. Oems.

Thank you. Any other questions?

Sounds like you’re trying to justify your purchase

I never claimed that. I’m going off the android/google fans when they were first released

Like most google products I find Chromebook’s trash.

I think in some ways this is what is iPhone Slim code name is for this foldable phone. That's why the when unfolded, this phone is thinner than the current iPhone models.

It would make sense. Though there'd need to be a lot of internal rejigging to make it possible. It could be hard to achieve this; and slim down the phone in a first model.

I still think Apple may have finally achieved the ability to get a folding display that meets Apple's own standards. I wouldn't be surprised that the iPhone 17 "Slim" foldable could come out late 2025 or even as late as March 2026.

So you've only used foldable phones in America and cited the Pixel Fold as evidence of a gimmick. That's your perspective. I agree the Pixel Fold has issues with its weight and width, making it a poor first-generation phone. If the revised version is similar to the OnePlus Open, then it will be a significant improvement. I don't care for the Duo. Chinese foldables are far superior to those available in the US.

Second, I'm not justifying myself. You claim Android is terrible, but it works much better for me. I could buy the iPhone 15 Pro Max but choose not to. Your logic misleads people's preferences. It's great you love the iPhone, and I recognize Android isn't for everyone. I even got my mom an iPhone 14 Pro Max because it's better suited for her.

Where I use my phone is irrelevant.
Android is a terrible operating system and half naked phones but as I said I’m glad it works for you.

I’d rather swallow glass than own another android as my daily driver.
