I was curious to see how long I could bear to listen to Cook's painfully monotonous drawl. Less than 30 seconds, it turned out. The charisma of a wet cardboard box.

You know things are bad when your ears prefer a hyper 60 second YT short summary of the device from iJustine.

For 200 bucks more you can get the iPhone 16. And you're getting Better GPU (4 core vs 5 core), Better Camera, WiFi 7, MagSafe, DisplayPort support, better wireless charging (7.5W vs 25W), More Color choice..

So what's the point of this completely unusual release? Saving $200? Really? And I'm sure it's gonna sell like hotcakes but doesn't it devalue the brand just a little? People still haven't forgotten about the 5c disaster.

Edit: It's $200 more not $100 as I previously said. My bad.

I'm really confused who this device is even for. At $600 starting it's no longer an affordable device, and it's rather handicapped compared to the rest of the 16 series whilst not being much cheaper...

I think what this really does is set a new baseline so they can start charging more for the others. Unfortunately not accidental and moves people into those more expensive phones more easily.

Watch the iPhone 17 be $899, the Air $999 and the Pro $1199 and this will make sense.

This.

Was thinking about this as a successor device for my 15yo son's 13 Mini. Now that I've seen it, other than the processor and screen size, the rest is not worth $600 IMHO when I can just wait until this fall to upgrade my own phone... and I can just pay $99 to replace the battery on my current 14 Pro and hand it off to him.

This is most comparable to iPhone 13, right? With the following differences:

  • Faster processor (A18 v A15)
  • AI
  • 2x cam instead of 0.5x
  • Much better battery (26h v 19h per Apple)
  • USB-C instead of Lightning port
  • No magsafe and slower charging
And action button.

I don't think Apple needed all the hype for this event. It was stale, and the only really interesting thing was the C1 chip.

No really solid details about that were even given, or maybe I just fell asleep when they starting talking about it.

This entire launch really could've been a press release and a website update.

The phone itself is decent, iterative, great for children and grand parents or business fleets. 🤷‍♂️

PSA: You don't have to watch the 12 minute video. You can just read the bullet points on the web site.

Everyone misses the main point. It is a new smartphone with latest chip, APPLE MODEM for the first time and also AFFORDABLE which is crucial in the new economy. It just like if Toyota released a low cost car with a latest engine. It will sell a lot because in light of all these tariffs, everything imported in US will become much more expensive and here is Apple with a latest and affordable smartphone - very smart idea. You and me may not need it but students and low income groups will be happy to have a latest chip in an affordable housing even if made not from titanium and not having wireless charging. Never underestimate power of low price and in addition it will also help drive sales. In addition, add few dollars and get regular iPhone - and Apple upsells it too. So all in all, very good strategy for current market
