€719 in France… My SE (2020) cost me €489… and no MagSafe, which is what I was hoping for the most…

Apple, what happened to you?

I bought a refurb SE (2022) last year in April for €450, yesterday the price was about €350. All with 256GB.

A refurb SE3 with 128GB was maybe €230 at that reseller yesterday.

I hope I can get at least three of those 128GB for less than €200 soon.

For 100 bucks more you can get the iPhone 16. And you're getting Better GPU (4 core vs 5 core), Better Camera, WiFi 7, MagSafe, DisplayPort support, better wireless charging (7.5W vs 25W), More Color choice..

So what's the point of this completely unusual release? Saving $100? Really? And I'm sure it's gonna sell like hotcakes but doesn't it devalue the brand just a little? People still haven't forgotten about the 5c disaster.
Uhm, 799-599 isn't 100. ;) But yes, an "economy phone" shouldn't be over $500. I doubt this will sell very well.

Does this not completely eliminate the purpose of the standard iPhone in the lineup? I'm sorry, but $200 for MagSafe, better peak brightness, dynamic island, and some better camera features doesn't seem very attractive in my understanding of the casual consumer. What I would think is important to the average consumer is battery life, which is actually improved by the E.

e = empty wallet

I could swear it was an upper case e in the first appearances on Apple's website. 🤔

I miss the announcements like Jobs used to do where you would watch it and would naturally just get in the car to drive to closest Apple store to purchase whatever he would announce because he would convince you that you needed to have it

This product did not deserve a special announcement nor even a video. Wake me up when we have something worth talking about.

In the Netherlands:

16e : €719
16 : €969
16 Pro : €1229

Hm. My father bought a 14 for €720 just before the 15 came out, things have definitely gotten more expensive. Affordable is now only relative.

But 26 hrs of battery life, that’s not bad. And honestly I don’t see a reason to buy the more expensive models anymore.

I'm really confused who this device is even for. At $600 starting it's no longer an affordable device, and it's rather handicapped compared to the rest of the 16 series whilst not being much cheaper...
I believe this tier is perfect for my grandfather. He upgraded from the iPhone XS to the iPhone 15 and mentioned it feels exactly the same, making him somewhat regret the upgrade. I need to convince him not to return his new phone. He mainly uses it only for calls, messages, emails, password management, and keep tracks of AirTags. Also the iPhone is user-friendly for older, non-tech-savvy people, and its build quality is premium unlike budget android phones, which is a must for him.

If I hadn't upgraded from my iPhone 11 to a 16 last September, I'd go for the 16e, definitely.

I want the latest chip so it's futureproofed, but I don't need a lot of the features. I don't take a lot of photos. I don't use MagSafe. Dropping the price of the base phone from $800 to $600 makes it easier to replace if/when I need to.

Edit: this also has a much smaller camera bump! I do not understand why Apple releases phones that wobble against their camera lens when laid on a table. I don't think Steve would have ever allowed that.

Interesting change re: video/coaching (I watch for mannerisms moreso than phone features). Things I noticed vs. previous videos: 1) Prayer gestures have been eradicated (notably Tim) -- replaced by a universal "hands together... hands apart" gesture. Everyone does it although Lucy needs more coaching as she did not get enough hand separation, and kept her fingers apart which is distracting. 1) Tim has finally lost the double-leg squat. Thank God. Still does a single leg squat though. Hopefully more coaching and we will never see the squat again. 2) Rotoscoping is very bad. E.g. Look at Lucy's shoes. 3) Post processing gives the video an overall feel of something that a good video AI system would generate.

Overall: Perhaps this video which has super strong post work yiedling something that looks very AI generated is what Apple wants. Obviously everyone is coached re: posture/speech patterns. To me the overall affect is "plastic" when I want the texture and feel of "hand-fashioned, hand-worked oak". If I were Tim & Co. next time I would ask for two videos to be produced: 1) The current approach, and 2) Something WILDLY ORGANIC. No green screen. No coaching. Completely natural setting. Presenters asked to "...be themselves". Backgrounds natural, and part of the final edit. Run some focus groups, and go with the winner. Fingers crossed.

The iPhone 16e lacks the UWB band, so I don’t believe it can be used to track AirTags.

It comes with the Notch? Oh come on Apple. And they should of put in the camera button. Apple AI is not a selling point. And the biggest technical downside is the Apple 5G modem. iPhone 16e users are going to be beta testers for Apple's modem.

As of today, here in Switzerland ...

The 16E costs Fr.629 and the 16 costs Fr.720 (amazon.de) or Fr.745 (digitec/galaxus).

As the base 15 is currently Fr.620 here, I suspect the 16E will drop in price relatively quickly.

Let us know when Apple releases a 12 minute video of Tim Cook announcing his resignation and an apology, on top of that, for bringing zero innovation, playing it too safe, etc. This 16e is already DOA, especially once google releases the Pixel 9a. Apple had a fantastic chance to have a major hit on their hands and, as usual, Apple/Tim Cook dropped the ball. I can't even defend Apple anymore at this point, so disappointed.
