I'm generally curious and open minded about the future potential of AR/VR over the next years and decades, but overall I still think this is the most polished version of a very immature product we have seen so far. Apple thinks you'll want to mostly use this for entertainment and productivity.

Most reviews so far were impressed by what it can do, but most also complained about the weight after only 30 mins so I'm not sure a lot of people would actually want to wear this for prolonged periods of time. Even if you do, you can't really share the experience with anyone so all the movies, shows, sports and games go out of the window immediately if you want to watch with your partner or your kids -- unless you buy multiple versions of course and FaceTime share the experience, which just sounds sad when you're on the same sofa.

Productivity we'll see, but I think it'll run into the same problem of discomfort when wearing it for longer, so you'd want another screen anyway.

So the device needs to get much smaller and lighter, but even then I don't see this replacing your primary computing device anytime soon. Both as an entertainment centre and as a productivity tool it'll remain a companion device for the most part. But as a companion it's ridiculously expensive. It's a device that no one will 'need' in the short to medium term, so for it to break through it will need to become a lot cheaper.

In anticipation of the counter that comparable devices cost the same or that the cost does not matter that much in certain business scenarios: Agreed! But those devices are still niche and I imagine a lot of people will struggle to justify the business case for spending $3,5k during an economic downturn on a machine that gives them additional screen real estate. The productivity gains would have to be quite significant!

Yeah it's heavy. Probably would want a counter balance weight at the back like some people do on their helmets with their NVGs

Whether that will go down well with consumers considering buying a first-generation product with a $3,499 starting price remains to be seen.
My money is on they will all sell out in 30 minutes, and be on back order until next year.

And it’ll be “the most exciting and amazing product release we’ve ever done. People love their VisionPro.”

Don’t ever doubt the public’s ability to spend frivolously.

Imagine being at a birthday party or xmas, or just having a fun time at home and having your dad strap on his stupid looking snorkel mask and start leering at you with his creepy digital eyes peering out. I guess you can re-live that trauma over and over again in 3D video though.

Or every child who gets their picture taken or video recorded about 2-3 times a day by parents on their smartphones...? I guess holding something while smiling isn't as creepy /s

Looking at the dad in the demo, I said he looks a bit built, which suggested to me, likely has a strong neck to wear the headset for the amount of video shots they had to take.

i have to imagine the hardware that was on display was not 100% final. They're likely trying to make some revisions to cut it down before it goes to full-on manufacturing.

It's hard to imagine that Apple won't come up with something to let iPhone/iPad take 3D spatial movies/photos. Whether that solution is inexpensive (a simple mount to hold two devices the right distance apart) or expensive (adding a second camera set to the iPhone Pro) or in between (selling a mount with an included second camera), I think Apple wants very much to make sure people can create content without having to wear the Vision. We aren't the only ones who can see how weird it would be to wear one at a party (I know they showed someone wearing one at a party in the promo but that was probably better than revealing future products).

I actually tend to agree. I think it will sell out initially and be on backorder, which will only drive demand.

It still means that you can’t just hand a family member the headset and have it fit. You first have to swap the light seal and/or the headband. That’s like having to change the phone case when you hand someone your iPhone.
I think I saw somewhere that light seal (and definitely the corrective lenses) clips magnetically.

Vision Pro weights 453g.
Basically one pound. Excellent point that puts the weight that's being manufactured in this thread in perspective.

Of course they will know there is something on their face. Just like lighter weight sunglasses, the perception of the weight will disappear unless a person is an infrequent user.

People are trying to make something out of nothing.

All this out of an article that pretty much just wonders if the head strap is a freebie or an accessory you pay for separately. Makes me laugh.

Thought they weren't even going to be out until next year!

If anyone can order them now, they certainly will be put immediately on back order!

Also, if they make only 100, they'll be back order right away, too! 😎

That top headstrap will be awesome. It’ll create VR memories for those 1980’s kids who had headgear with their braces.

Sunglasses typically weigh anywhere between 20 to 100 grams, so worst case scenario is you put 4.5 pairs of heavy sunglasses or 22 pairs of very light sunglasses on your head.

Edit: So a scuba mask apparently is around 200 grams, so if the Vision Pro is 1lb you're looking at wearing a bit more than two scuba masks for an extended period of time.

A lot of people will be eating a lot of crow in three - five years.

Give it a chance.

I've been weighing my sunglasses for comparison, they are actually just 14 grams. So 32 of those. ;)

I can because I remember, as a kid, my grandfather holding his VHS camcorder at every event.

I was thinking the same thing. My uncle had one when they were new. And he was always the dork holding the giant camera at events. Of course now we are glad to have those videos.

However, watching the demos I can't imagine being the one at a kid's birthday party looking like a robot, staring at everyone with a Daft Punk helmet. The videos would be great but it's kind of like being Jacque Cousteau observing sea life.

From the Oxford Dictionary: looking or gazing in a lascivious or unpleasant way.

The comment seems way more creepy than Dad.

If I knew how old you were I could gain some perspective on the comment.
