It still means that you can’t just hand a family member the headset and have it fit. You first have to swap the light seal and/or the headband. That’s like having to change the phone case when you hand someone your iPhone.
But what other possibility could there be if one wants a perfect fit?

It can replace a laptop, screens, and a large screen TV, fair enough. But is it *better* than a laptop, screens, and a large screen TV with AirPods Pro for Atmos sound?

(You'd probably wear AirPods with the Vision Pro anyway, or how annoying would the sound be to others)?

The effect of weight is as much about balance as it is about mass. I can't help wondering if it would actually have felt more comfortable to wear if the power pack had been mounted on the back to counter-balance it a bit. I guess Apple tried that though.

The issue here is that for $3500 they still couldn't make it lighter than existing $299 headsets like the Quest 2, that doesn't bode well for the rumored consumer version. Although maybe the rumored consumer version uses more plastic, making it lighter, who knows. The best UI and OS in the world won't make a difference if you just want to rip it off your head after 30 minutes due to discomfort. I absolutely loved my Quest 2, but the reason I sold it (twice mind you) was exactly because of how uncomfortable it was. Comfort IS the killer app here, make these light and comfortable and you will see a much larger demand.

Good thin the battery life is only 2 hours.
I think we have to assume that the 2 hour battery life is NOT because Apple could not make the battery bigger, but rather that Apple realized that no one in their right mind would wear this thing for more than 2 hours.

Or it could have been just to avoid health liability lawsuits.

For productivity specifically, the question will also be whether Apple allows it to be better or whether they'll hold some things back to not undermine Mac or iPad sales.

The iPad has enough power for my personal and professional use cases, but I work with documents, spreadsheets and PowerPoint (and very basic stuff there), not coding or design stuff.

I still couldn't get a lot of work done on an iPad because the OS is too crippled.

Speaking at least for the Quest 2, it was only better for a brief time until it got too uncomfortable to want to keep wearing it. That's the Achilles heel here, no matter how good it is you're really not going to want to wear it for long.

I think it’ll come in the box. They aren’t going to talk about because what are they going to say? If the default strap doesn’t work, you can also add this other strap?

And after walking out of the apple store dropping $3500, you put the headset on and it sags, are users going to think, ”Oh, I should have added on the $99 extra strap accessory!” No…they will return it. The device fitting your head properly isn’t an “optional” thing here, it is the core function of the product.

My guess is this will be super next level packaging and unboxing. I’d be very surprised if it doesn’t come with some kind of travel case (And not just a “bra” like the AirPods Max.)

Sunglasses typically weigh anywhere between 20 to 100 grams, so worst case scenario is you put 4.5 pairs of heavy sunglasses or 22 pairs of very light sunglasses on your head.

Edit: So a scuba mask apparently is around 200 grams, so if the Vision Pro is 1lb you're looking at wearing a bit more than two scuba masks for an extended period of time.
I appreciate your point and plead guilty, but still say with frequent use the weight will not be an issue. My point, which I communicated poorly, was, just like your lighter weight sunglasses, it is unlikely, if you are a regular user that it will bother you. The support system is very different than a pair of glasses. This system disperses the weight over a bigger surface area than the three points of contact that glasses do.

If it is successful as a work tool and as a consumer product and it evolves as other Apple products do, this conversation will be moot in a few years. There is likely to be a few versions offered and a price range that will become palatable.

None of us, save for a few exceptions, have seen anything more than the WWDC videos. A chill pill would be in order for most of us.

Don't you people want this to work? I was like wow, this actually could be the start of a new era in computing devices. I think it is quite exciting and can't wait to see how it develops over the next few years. They won't be an instant hit, but they are likely to become one. People are paying numbers not too far from this for all kinds of computing and entertainment devices. The average MacBook Pro sale has to come in at + 3000 and if you are in a business ion your own or someone else's, you are going to write it off.

I'm in. Maybe not the first iteration, but I am in.

If Apple didn't think I'd want to wear it for more than two hours, why would they position it as a device to watch movies or sports that last longer?

I think the weight of a scuba mask is distributed differently. The VisionPro has significant weight a couple of inches from your face. That puts more strain in your neck than the equivalent scuba mask.

For $3,500 is better come with the strap and perhaps also a 2nd battery.

I think it looks good with the strap. Without the strap it looks more like scuba or ski goggles.

Maybe Vision Pro should also come with an Apple comb because some people 🤪 will complain it ruins the hair style.

I’m pretty sure Craig Federighi vetoed making the strap mandatory.

I really wanted to see Craig or really any of the executives wearing it.

Now that I think about it, every single presenter (and even the guests) were wearing an Apple Watch Ultra. Everyone is super proud of that one.

No one wore the headset. They just had a bunch of annoyed looking models do it. That does not bode well.

To invoke Steve one more time, if he had presented this he would have been wearing it the whole time. I realize it's not quite done, but again he wouldn't have demoed it until he could at least give an iPhone-style "golden path" demo.

Apple has shown hat they are happy to cannibalise their own products, eg iPhone killing the iPod; especially if thy have higher margins. The Vision Pro hardware is essentially an M2 laptop with 11 more cameras, and fancy screens, but costs three times as much!

Good point. Except that without movies or sports, there does not seem to be any major use-case.

I don't think I agree with that. They clearly made watching video a big thing, sure. But they also went to great lengths to show people using it for work.

However now that I think about it, not sure I would want to watch a three hour football game in this thing. The game would have to be shot in 3D and look incredible to make it worth it. And then of course you still have an hour's worth of 2D annoying ads every few minutes.

It could be the achilles heel, but I don’t think it can really be compared directly to the quest. The quest 2 is uncomfortable because it is front heavy, the default strap is terrible, the visor not breathable at all, the lenses are trash (in comparison) and the resolution is poor, with heavy screen door effect. The sweet spot with the quest is tiny, if the headset moves just a MM everything becomes blurry for me. You also can’t look around, things are only sharp in the center and you have to manually turn your head to look at things.

The Vision Pro is much thinner in design, has a breathable face mask, much better resolution and display quality, a better strap design and potentially lighter weight (than the quest 2) or at least, better distributed because it doesn’t hang so far off of your face.

Are you still going to want to wear it for 8 hours? I highly doubt it, but I think for movies/tv shows/a few hours of focused work it will be great.

I really wish people would learn that the “looks dorky” complaint wears off quick. iPad, iPhone (yes people said that looked dorky holding a brick to your ear), and AirPods.

It doesn’t look dorky, it looks new.

We can all debate the utility or value, but saying it’s not a good product because of looks has gotten VERY old.
No you look like a dork wearing it. Just like the Microsoft execs did when announcing HoloLens. This is most likely why no Apple exec was shown wearing one.

What are the batter requirements for flying? Is this as big a battery as you can bring on a plane?

Thought they weren't even going to be out until next year!

If anyone can order them now, they certainly will be put immediately on back order!

Also, if they make only 100, they'll be back order right away, too! 😎
Haha you know what I mean :p

And yes didn’t think about production constraint. It will definitely be sold out in 15 minutes now :)
