This is exactly the same mess as with Apple Pencil. Steve is rolling in his grave.
They have to keep all apple pencils because they don’t all work with every device. It’s no different than the fact that Apple still sells cases for older iPhones they no longer sell. Would you prefer they remove the availability of accessories because you don’t need them even though some consumers do? Eventually they will drop the original pencil

The transition won't be complete until they discontinue the last Lightning iPhones (the 14 series) at the end of next year. I'm guessing the other products will have switched to USB-C by then as well.

I'm still all Lightning

iPhone 13 Mini
iPhone SE (2016) - LOTS of them
iPad Mini 5
AirPods 1/2/Pro
Siri Remotes
AirPods Max
Magic Trackpads / Keyboards

I'll be on Lightning for a long long while

But - I have moved to Apple 30w dual port USB-C chargers for all my bricks and I now only buy USB-C on the charger side. That has started my USB-C transition for other USB devices like my Garmin charger, toothbrush charger, etc

Given the amount of lightning port devices that people use irregardless of the recent devices that are USB-C. I wouldn't want to tick off older owners looking for worn out cable replacements. Just like there is so much gear that uses USB-A connectivity and cables still widely used. Example CarPlay, power banks, and those older Apple chargers.

I still have Lightning for my Magic Keyboard/mouse and AirPod Maxes -- but I couldn't stand it anymore for the aging iPads my kids were using and my wife's. All their stuff is now USB-C and my life is much easier because aside from my headphones, the lightning devices live at my desk and the lightning cable is right there.

Not only should they have gotten rid of lightning five years ago, but they should have a wired "Pro" keyboard that is also a powerful and reliable hub.

iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 14, iPhone 13, and iPhone SE
If the rumors about the next SE are true the entire iPhone lineup will be USB-C faster than you'd think too - I'd say by spring 2025. In September the iPhone 13 and (probably) 14 Plus will be discontinued, leaving only the SE and 14 with lightning. Then in the spring a new SE based on the 14 debuts and Apple discontinues the current SE and the 14.

SURELY Apple will upgrade these this autumn...hopefully with a way to finally charge the mouse while using it??

Apple can continue selling those Lightning products for as long as they want. The old products are grandfathered in. Only new products introduced by end of 2024 must be USB-C.

The answer to why is right in front of us: Apple wants to sell through as much of the legacy lightning stuff as possible that they have in inventory before starting to introduce the USB-C versions. You can expect discounts to get steeper and steeper through authorized resellers like Amazon and B&H until Apple runs low enough for write-offs.

You know what? I think it’s great that the full Vision Pro experience requires a Lightning cable. Why would anybody want to carry only one charging cable? Dumb.
Your lightning cables won't work with Vision Pro. You'd be dumb to carry one with you for that purpose. Really dumb!

You'll need a USB-C charging cable for Vision Pro.

I still use a rare and vintage Apple device that has neither Lightning nor USB-C  (MPB mid 2012).

No need to get a case of the shakes over a cable. Planet Earth will continue to rotate into the Sun's rays every morning.

Usually I hate it when people say this but in this case you are right on!

Remember the 2x2 matrix? made it easy to understand the lineup (forget the mac mini which didn't fit in the matrix :) ). That was easy to understand Laptop or desktop? Small or "pro"?

Now you need a macrumors article to figure out which pencil works with which. Also to figure out how the various laptops, watches, ipads, etc relate. Apple is supposed to make things simple and powerful, but the whole product lineup is a confusing mess. And this applies to the subscription services too!

These days shopping for an apple product is almost as difficult as buying a Dell.

(Yes, I understand that they need to keep accessories around for a long time because apple hardware lasts a long time. I'm sure there are people who lose their v1 pencil and need to replace it. )

honestly the fact they're lightning has given me the strength I needed not to buy the black ones. i expect that strength runs out by the end of the year - maybe even after WWDC as they tend to introduce with the latest pro/studio models.
Unfortunately they don't make a black one without the useless keypad. I have a keyboard and trackpad in a 12 south bridge. I don't want a huge carbuncle between the keyboard and the trackpad.
