Decided to go for it on the 12-core. Rationally it was the right choice (this thing is going to be the new core of my little post production company, cranking out billable deliverables on tight deadlines at all hours), but man, that price tag is rough. I almost chickened out and went with the 8-core.

Ordered a 6-core, 16GB RAM, 512GB storage, dual D500s $3969 plus tax with educational discount.

I assume the base models won't be available in store before the 30th?

Ordered the lower end stock model - excited to finally have my order in, but not thrilled with the shipping and arrival dates. So much for this year!

Still not sure if I should wait for benchmarks to see the difference between the D500 and D700, or if I should just bite the bullet.

Ended up with stock hex core (256GB, 16GB) with the D700 upgrade. OWC's pricing is pretty good so I'll just go to 64GB later, and maybe upgrade Flash down the road a few years. $5001 with tax included.

I did the financing which was painless too.

Shipment 1 Available to ship: January

• 3.5GHz 6-core with 12MB of L3 cache

AppleCare Protection Plan for Mac Pro - Auto-enroll

I also checked the local store pick-up. The date given was Feb 5.

We'll see when it actually arrives.

Done and done. Going to get 64GB RAM thru Crucial or OWC for around $880, should be able to sell the 3 4GB Modules to cut into that a bit more.

Given these machines wont be delivered till January, can someone please convince me to wait till next year for the Xeon (and hence Mac Pro) refresh?

Remember everyone, OWC will give you $75 for your 12GB or $100 for your 16GB of stock RAM. This makes the 32GB OWC RAM cost $404 or $379 and the 64GB will only be $795 or $820. Makes sense to keep RAM at base levels in either case but especially if you are going for 64GB.

I'm probably going 6-core, D300, 12GB (upgrade to 32GB at OWC) and still can't decide what to do with the SSD (probably will go 512GB).

Even if you want everything the 6-core base model has it make more sense to start with the 12GB 4-core and upgrade through Apple the other specs as you see fit.

12 CPU, 64 GB RAM, 1 TB flash, D700. Since the Apple memory wasn't 2 or 3 times the price of crucial 64 ($880) but just a few hundred more, I decided to go with the Apple RAM. That way if there are any problems it will up to AppleCare to fix it and I don't have to muck around inside the machine.

I guess when you are speccing out the highest model the $400 difference isn't all that much in the grand scheme of things and I can see your reasoning behind having it all covered by AppleCare. Good point.

Alternatively...

If you want 32 GB you might as well get it from Apple. The difference is minor and you save some hassle.

If you want 64GB, money is probably not an issue, but if you want to save a bit, SuperBiiz has 16GB 1833 ECC sticks for $170 ($680 for 64GB).

Probably should have gotten base model quicker - but

Octo
16GB
512 Flash.

If it was just memory I would have gone stock but wanted the 512GB Flash.
I needed to stay in budget because I need a display. (Have an iMac now)

Maybe this will give me time to sort out storage and displays.

(Had some discount through EPP purchase)

But 32 GBs from Apple leaves you stuck with 4x8. I am thinking of going with 2x16 from Crucial and then I can fill the other two slots with 16 GBs sticks when I feel the need.

I hear you VR. That is now the way I'm going to go. 6 core, 32GB, 512GB, D300s. I think the $100 extra is worth the no-hassle. If I wanted 64GB I would do it through OWC or Crucial.

Hmmm....that is a good idea actually. That would allow an easy expansion to 48 or 64 GB in the future. You've got me thinking again.

Is there any issue running just two sticks in this machine?? I guess the base 4-core runs 3 sticks so shouldn't be any issues??

How about running 2 of the included 4GB sticks (from the base 12GB 4-core) and then adding 2 16GB sticks for 40GB total. Any issues with mismatched RAM sizes and brands??

I decided to go for the Quad-Core, 16gb ram, 256 gb storage and dual D700. I think that will be enough for photo-editing and hopefully gaming some years from now. Thoughts anyone?

My config is 12-core 2.7GHz, 16GB RAM (will buy 3rd party upgrade), 512GB SSD, D700s.

Total comes to £6419 and ships in 'January'.
