I really like having the ASD speakers for conference calls - being able to use those for system alerts & conference calls, with an external mic, is a great setup for me. Its also a neat setup not needing to have desk speakers although I have a couple of HomePods for music.

I wish modern apple keyboards would use the AEK font again. So good.
Not exactly what you wished for, but...

I noticed a few weeks ago that Apple has studio displays on the refurb store. Last week the even got the VESA models in with both regular and nano glass. I ordered a regular one and today when I looked they were sold out while they still had the nano VESA.

I'm very happy with my VESA models. While not quite as elegant as the height adjustable stand from Apple, they're far more flexible. Most people probably don't even realize the Studio Displays support auto-rotation since Apple's stands don't rotate. But on a VESA arm, if you rotate the display 90°, the image will automatically rotate and the camera will automatically reorient so the image is positioned appropriately as well.

Yes. I knew that and that I why I was hoping they would show up in the refurbished store. The new computer is waiting for me at the Apple Store today and the display is supposed to arrive tomorrow.

I got the tilt refurb

I have one I bought from Amazon (tilt-only + Nano glass). Their new price was spitting distance from Apple's refurb price o_O

I initially bought it when I tried going iPad-only since the Ultrafine 5K was unreliable with it.

ASD worked fine, except of course no camera function or firmware updates through the iPad.

Brought back the Mini (2020 Intel) as my computer - ASD works fine unless I put the Mac to sleep. On wake, the text is fuzzy:

Nothing clears it except dis-/re-connect the TB cable, reboot the Mini, or power-cycle the ASD. I just invested in this; maybe Apple should sell it as a $250 ASD add-on!

To my knowledge and research, the Studio Display doesn't output 4K via TB3 to HDMI adapter with the PS5 or XSX right? Only 1080p it seems.

Anybody else not bothering with Studio Display firmware updates? If it ain't broke don't fix it is my attitude.

So after a few firmware updates to the ASD, how is the camera quality now? Is it much better than what it was some months ago?

It's alright. I definitely think it being blown up as a 1080p image on a 5k monitor doesn't help things, but its still a relatively grainy camera which is probably poorer than it should be. That being said, it's better than the webcams on almost all existing macs besides the 14/16" Pros.

It is definitely better, but still bad enough that I choose to use unsightly external cameras.

Some configuration options, especially the ability to choose the framing and reduce smoothing, would go a long way.

I personally don't think it's as bad as people make it out to be. Yes, it's effectively a 1080p camera (once zoomed in and cropped) on a $1300 display, so a 4K camera should probably have been included instead. But Apple chose to do Center Stage instead, so 1080p it is. And while I've had three people in front of my Studio Display before and Center Stage automatically zoomed out to get us all nicely in frame, the majority of the time it's just me alone in front of it, so how often is Center Stage really needed? Guess that's up for debate, too. It certainly was handy that Center Stage could keep us all in frame then return to zooming in on just me once the others had left, it's not a feature I need on a daily basis.

But for a 1080p camera, it's decent. Maybe not the worlds best 1080p camera, but far from the worst.

But don't fall in to the trap of taking a 1080p picture, blowing it up to 27" on a 5K display, and then complain that the image is grainy. Of course it will be. Even the world's best 1080p webcam is going to look like crap at 5K.

But for Zoom meetings and FaceTime calls, it's more than serviceable. I wouldn't record your YouTube channel's content on it, obviously. Again, the argument that a $1300 display doesn't have a top of the line 4K camera is still valid, but my image on the recorded Zoom calls I've watched back still look better than almost everyone else's as far as I can tell.

Perhaps the next version will improve on it.

My take on it -- the camera is good enough and not the reason I bought the Studio Display in the first place. Hey, the $6000 XDR doesn't even have one (or speakers).

I think you resumed the whole thing very clearly and nicely. Your message appears to be a clear voice of reason to me. Thanks!

I just received my ASD today, 1 hour ago! Unboxing it was ... Wow!! I'm impressed by the boxing and the way Apple delivers this display. Can't use it yet, until I receive my new mini later in a few days...

Just finished reading all 110 pages 😅

I have this same thing on a new Studio Display:

If I run my ear along the top edge of the display starting from the RIGHT side (facing the display) and moving left there is nearly inaudible fan noise until you reach about 2-3 inches from the left edge of the display. At that point there is a buzzing sound but it is NOT the fan, it is an electrical hum / buzz either from the display circuitry or the power system that in this display is integrated (since it just has a simple electrical cable to the outlet.) This buzz lasts about an inch then fades away by the time your ear reaches the left most edge (again, facing the display.) I have NO problem with this at all because both the fan noise and the electrical noise are inaudible to me when I move just inches away from the display even in a dead quiet room, I hear nothing from a seated position. I think its normal on mine.

@canyonblue737 Has it gone worse over the time?

Anyone else with this “problem”?

Support for Intel Macs is broken.

Seems to be an Intel phenomenon.
