While performing updates the other day, I was truly impressed by how seamless the process was.

I wish that was the case for me. The last three times I've applied updates the monitor goes into a screen where it's stuck in restore mode like this guy. I've been dreading getting it looked at because of the time I've read people say it took for repairs.

I get you, actually the update would keep prompting without restarting, 3 times, but the 4th time it worked.

Weird but eventually work out all good.

Just updated mine and didn't run into any issue. One ASD connected to the 14-inch MacBook Pro (M1 Pro) in closed lid mode, it's running macOS Ventura 13.3.

I can't figure out what it is that eventually makes it start working. I've tried with my laptop open, closed, waiting a long time before power cycling at the restore screen, etc.

Thanks!

It was taken with my Canon R6. Behind the studio display is a simple lamp from wilko that gives a warm ambiance light. It’s tiny so the monitor stand hides it well. It also performs as a cute stage light illuminating the frame :)

The one resting on the stand in the stream deck, but if you meant the little white case on the right that is the new AirPods Pro

So I put a backlight (IKEA from my mum she had a spare one) and wow this further completed the whole experience!

The balance of everything is perfect really now.

Just one question folks, shall I set the ASD speakers as 44'100 or 48'000 in MIDI preferences/SoundSource?

Because as I first loaded in Ableton it auto-picked 48'000 but when I used my M1 speakers and sound card later on it picks 44'100.

Everything should be set to 44'100, correct? Am I gaining so much more audio details in selecting 48'000? Or it doesn't really matter. And is the ASD speakers geared toward 44'100 or 48'000 use?

Usually 44'100 is the standard when exporting audio stems but I've read on Reddit that some composers especially in movie scoring prefer to export at 48'000 and even some at 96'000 to get the maximum amount of sound information.

I really need to stop coming to this thread like once a month to again say how much I love this screen, but here I am again. I love this screen. I can't believe I was ever worried I wouldn't like it, lol. It's probably my favorite Apple device. It's between that and the base non-pro Airpods (3rd gen).

Here it is in my temporary desk setup. (I really need to make it more of a permanent one...)

Nice setup..

Blogs and people's opinions have their plus and minus. Sometimes because we hear, read, watch etc. too much back and forth about "if" it is good or not. Sometimes too much..and makes it hard to decide.

This monitor purchase is a simple decision buy: If you like it, get it.. simple.

After listening to sooo...many analysis on the Apple Studio Monitor here are the conclusions..they all say the same in one way or another:

If you like the design, don't mind the mirror glare; has one of the best (or best) speakers for monitors; so so camera; one of the few 5K monitors out currently; can accept the high (Apple) price...get it. If you don't like one of more of their options...consider not buying it.

I would buy it "if" I had the money...but could not justify the purchase with my wallet and the wife. I traveled three hours to the nearest Apple store to look at the Nano version (heard back and forth about it)...after seeing it for myself...great idea..but no thanks. I do video editing...can't have a little grainy text...but the non-glare was nice (coming from a thunderbolt and Cinema Apple monitors).

I instead went with Apple's LG 24" UltraFine...love it. Perfect for what I do. Like the two thunderbolt ports in the back. The Apple Studio monitor does not have two thunderbolt ports..

A few years ago, I bought the 24" monitor before and then returned it. Did not work well with my Mac Pro 2013. I have also a LG 27" (matted) - love it (though not Apple - tolerated the so so design - not bad though...but...prefer a smaller monitor (24" is perfect for my use).

The reason I say this is because I read, watched and listen to too much opinions etc. about the monitors and decided because of the "experts" say...they know better...so I went with their recommendations and decided to return the 24" the first time I bought it...

But...took a risk again when I purchased the MacBook Pro 2021 and need another monitor. I tried the 24" LG again...and surprisingly, it worked better this time for me and is basically perfect...price...for me I decided, "yes" I "could" get a "cheaper" monitor...but paying the extra was worth it to me as it worked for my Apple ecosystem.

Glad you like Apple Studio Monitor. :)

Did anyone manage to get this working with a linux machine running a RTX 4090? I get a black screen/screen off as soon as I get to gnome's login panel (it's working, just no image, fully off).

Another tip for anyone hating the default menu bar that gives you no choice to override the colors/transparency of your wallpaper: install BoringOldMenuBar

It allows you to select a solid menu bar instead of the default, non-customizable one that comes with macOS.

Personally I wanted the bar to look more solid that the lighter blue macOS generated automatically > I selected Dark Mode > Catalina Dark > Divider Style: Single Pixel (by default). You can even select > Custom (haven't tried it, Catalina Dark perfect for me)

I found it through this link

Actually I just tried the Custom mode to show you this olive color that came by default and is actually lovely haha. You can pick any color basically, and it gets better, you can even select different ones for each Desktop you have if you want, brilliant!

So I actually put back True Tone as yeah I have to say it's really ideal in my usually low light conditions I don't need that much brightness and this really makes it warmer, I got used to it now it's very natural (and in sync with my iPhone/iPad).

But for anyone doing some Pro photo/video work here's this video, the guy explains everything you need to know in great detail:

Is anyone having a problem with the brightness being set on lowest when first connected to MBP?
All I have is that True Tone occasionally acts a bit odd for the first few seconds the monitor is plugged in. (Doesn't happen when waking from sleep.) It will turn fully blue then transition to being yellower. The brightness stays the same as when I last unplugged the MBP.

Thanks for mentioning that, I’ll try different scenarios to check if coming from wake up or full start affects the brightness level it was last set.

It would be silly that Apple didn’t make sure the brightness level remains the same regardless of whether you’re waking up and turn off/on the ASD. If so, we should make sure to file a ticket so that they fix it in the next update.

Hey guys, wondering if you can help?

Every time I disconnect my Studio Display from my 16" M2 Max MacBook Pro, my laptop freezes, and screen goes black then either won't respond until I press the power button a few times, or automatically reboots.

Am I doing something wrong? Should I not be unplugging the display while the computer is on? I thought these were hot pluggable/unpluggable?

Thanks in advance.

Does it do the same thing if you put the machine to sleep before disconnecting?
Are you safely ejecting any attached media (drives, discs, servers, etc)?

That indeed may be the reason.

If so, they should fix it because I don't see why such factors would cause MBP to freeze.

And that worked! Putting it to sleep after I disconnect the drives, THEN unplugging from studio display. Thanks. If that's what I have to do, that's OK.

Quite annoying to be honest, I don't know any other monitor requiring such a hassle? A on/off button (even secretly hidden) wouldn't have hurt to simplify the process... or a special feature to prevent external disks to wake up the screen/computer...

True. I'd rather be able to just hot-swap, but I appreciate that pulling the cable from the studio display to my Mac also disconnects drives that MIGHT be in use by apps/memory. Even still, it was still crashing even if I had ejected the drives then unplugging the screen. Putting the Mac to sleep is one extra step I'd rather not have to do but in the grand scheme of things, it's really a first world problem isn't it? hah.

I was just following usual troubleshooting steps. I’ve got two ASDs and I don’t need to put my MBP to sleep when disconnecting. Doesn’t cause a crash. I’m in the habit of sleeping the machine nonetheless when I do disconnect. Guess I’m old school.
