So I put a backlight (IKEA from my mum she had a spare one) and wow this further completed the whole experience!

The balance of everything is perfect really now.
Do show us a photo when you can. I enjoy having the ambient light that I put up even though it’s running at 5w/hr during the energy crisis 😅

Another tip for anyone hating the default menu bar that gives you no choice to override the colors/transparency of your wallpaper: install BoringOldMenuBar

It allows you to select a solid menu bar instead of the default, non-customizable one that comes with macOS.

Personally I wanted the bar to look more solid that the lighter blue macOS generated automatically > I selected Dark Mode > Catalina Dark > Divider Style: Single Pixel (by default). You can even select > Custom (haven't tried it, Catalina Dark perfect for me)

I found it through this link

Bartender is better. Pricey for what it is but so worth it.

There you go! Settled for red theme eventually. Sorry about the average image quality (iPhone 13 Pro Max).

I get you, actually the update would keep prompting without restarting, 3 times, but the 4th time it worked.

Weird but eventually work out all good.

Mine kept looping the update without success. Finally, during one of the update power downs I just pulled the power plug. Waited about 15 seconds, plugged back in and it went through a successful update.
BE AWARE APPLE SAYS NOT TO UNPLUG THE MONITOR DURING THE UPDATE. I DID THIS AT MY OWN RISK.

Another tip I use, since I find the black of the ASD a bit weird on such a large surface with plain dark websites (since it's not a QD-OLED), I reverted Google and Youtube (which I usually use on my iPhone in dark mode) back to light mode on the ASD.

But the trick is to use Dark Reader extension in Brave, in Light mode for those sites, in order to make the white a bit more grey, and with slightly less brightness and slightly more contrast.

That way, the ASD brightness remains perfect for me in all situations, with this fixed setting:

Debating if Applecare for ASD is worth it. Had it on my LED cinema display and never needed it.

But with the ASD have a bionic chip and running iOS i'm wondering if it's worth getting and if anyone else got it?

I decided to not take it. I'm using Macs since a very long time, and never brought AppleCare. I never had to use it. Hardware problems happen usually a relatively long time after any warranty.

For example, I used my old 20" Apple display for more than 17 years, it's still working great today, and never had AppleCare for it.

AppleCare+ is generally for two years OR ongoing monthly subscription.

Apologies if this has already been discussed, tried to search with no luck.

I have a Mac Pro with AMD reference 6800xt (non-mpx) connected to Studio Display via gpu's usb-c connector. When booting to Windows, ASD camera, speakers and microphone are available. However on MacOS, no such luck. Anyone any ideas how to get them working?

I didn't take Applecare for ASD in my case, since it looks so solid that it could easily last 20 years without any issue.

If I purchase a more expensive screen in the future though, like the XDR v2, I'll probably get it though, for peace of mind.

This is like the most expensive object I've owned minus cars. I got applecare. I'm scared of shattering it, lol.

I got it for mine, but you’ll get many different opinions whether it’s worth it or not…

Don't know if it was because of the display but my Studio M1 Max wouldn't wake from sleep twice last week. Had to disconnect it, reconnect, hard shut down and reboot. Let's see if the new Ventura update prevents that happening.

So Bartender is not better at all, and a totally different product.

There's no way of changing the bar color in Bartender, whereas it is the sole purpose of Boring Old Menu Bar.

The only thing Bartender does is hiding your bar icons. I actually remember having installed this app in the previous version years ago. Nice UI upgrade they did, but nothing new here, and still, it's not bringing any feature I need since I don't hide my bar icons.

Anyway, I also ended up uninstalling BOMB since I reverted my MBP to Light Mode + 'Increase Contrast' and 'Reduce Transparency' in Accessibility (and when you do so, BOMB can no longer override the light grey menu bar), which not only gives a great retro look to the whole macOS experience, but most importantly is way more comfortable and sharper using the ASD all day/night long. Funny how I'm eventually ditching most dark modes on large computer screen since using the ASD. Light gray tuning all the way.

I wonder if some of these issues have something to do with Ventura and the 16.4 update. It’s been smooth sailing for me with Monterey and 15.5.

Brightness at full - photos look relatively close to eyesight, maybe a bit overblown.

Is my unit on par with everyone else’s?

I have zero complaints; just curious. I’ve had a couple of high-end monitors in the past, and this is by far the best backlight bleed among them. This is a replacement unit. My first one was a perfect panel but sadly, the power supply had an issue with electric noise and buzzing.

Difficult to tell. Mine doesn't look that dramatic, but I'm not in the same lighting conditions as you. The most noticeable part of my unit is in the corners (especially the bottom two) it noticeably doesn't get as bright as the rest of the panel. This is only extreme at high brightness.

Absolutely, lighting ultimately determines how we perceive backlight bleed, for better or worse.

Do you notice the dimmer corners on grey/white backgrounds or is it mostly with dark content?

Maybe mine aren't quite that dramatic, but I've never had reason to blast brightness to 100% on a black screen. But to be honest, I've never seen an IPS panel that didn't have some backlight bleed like that.

Yeah, certainly - this may sound like self-reassurance, but I do believe the camera makes the backlight bleed look more pronounced compared to my eyesight. The bottom right and top right are visible, like the photos, but the bottom left and especially the top are almost black to my eyes.
