Can't be good for the fans to run 24x7 can it... and not really very 'green' - maybe it's their solution to stop dust getting in :D
Computer fans are designed to run 24/7. My network cabinet fans, Synology NAS fans, switch fans, router fans, UPS fans, etc. have all been running 24/7. The network cabinet fans have been running for 7 years continuously without problems. My Synology RS1221+ replaced a RS815+ that had the fans running for 6 years without problems. One of my switches has had its fans running 24/7 for 8 years without problems.

Just enjoy your display and computer. Don't worry about the fans. Yes, fans do occasionally fail, but computer fans are designed to be operated continuously for many years.

Quick question for owners. Are any of you using this with a Mac Mini? I'm thinking of buying this combo with the 16GB of RAM and 1TB of SSD in the mini. I just watched the below review where the reviewer is comparing Mini v Studio and he thinks the Mini slows down trying to power the 5K ASD. For a very non-demanding user like me who uses the Mac to web browse, MS office work, watching content etc. No video/photo editing and no gaming. Will this be an issue or should I think of getting the basic Studio?

I have a 16 GB M1 Mini. No issues here. A Studio for your needs would be a total waste of money.

The Studio is more than what most people need. My wife has a MBA 16" with 64GB of memory and 4TB SSD. I really want a Studio to match the processing power. I use Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and PDF a lot. I could use 32GB of memory at least because of 600+ Word/Acrobat PDF files, but her processing power is way overkill for me. She needs it for photography work (Photoshop).

I'll wait for the M2 to upgrade my Mini. Hopefully the M2 is capable of 32GB of memory.

Anyone find the standard height to low? I´m 6´3 and I don´t want any raiser on the desk. I put my actual 27 Dell at 48cm and I can´t tell if its OK or if I want it to be OK so I don´t spendd 400dls more on the height adjustable hahaha.

The tilt helps a little I think It should be fine... :p

I happened to watch a video yesterday where the reviewer mentioned he's 6'1" and is glad he got the height-adjustable stand.

Apple fan here,

I was undecided between purchasing a Dell or Apple studio display.
I ended up purchasing a Dell S2722QC.

Apple studio display
pro:
👍 aluminium design
👍👍 5k display
👍👍 218 ppi
👍👍 4 usb-c ports
👍👍 stereo
👍👍 webcam
👍👍 600 nits
👍 p3 colours
👍 integration with macOS
👍👍 2 year warranty (EU zone)
👍 usb-c 1m included
cons:
👎 hdmi, usb-a, displyport
👎👎 HDR
👎 if I accidentally broke the cable I don't know what will happen
👎👎 height adjustment and rotation
👎👎👎👎👎 price €1620 (student discount)

Dell S2722QC
pro:
👍👍👍👍👍 price € 400 (student discount)
👍 4k display
👍 163ppi
👍 1 usb-c ports
👍 stereo
👍 350 nits
👍👍 HDR
👍👍 height adjustment and rotation
👍 removable cable
👍👍👍👍 4 year warranty (incluse in the initial price)
👍 2x hdmi, usb-a, displyport
👍 usb-c 1m included
cons:
👎 p3 colours
👎 integration with macOS
👎 plastic design
👎 webcam

delta: €1220

I will buy a usb-c hub for my other cables (€10-€20) and I'll use the webcam of the MacBook Pro when I need to switch it on, otherwise I could buy it (€50)

Never had a DELL before, wish me luck 🍀🙂
For HDR, I had asked around, and the current owner confirmed that the ASD does playback HDR, and is capable of display wide colour gamut. Consider peak brightness for ASD is 600 nits (400 nits on the Dell), it should be more capable for HDR.

So I think you can cross out HDR as a con from ASD and compare to the Dell is actually a pro.

I got mine today. Standard spec. Both before and after update the webcam is fine. Compared to my m1 MBP 16” its grainier but also sharper. I cant say its worse. I love the resolution, totally sharp at its native resolution. I use it at its highest resolution, works much better than 4k displays. I first thought I would send it back but this is a keeper for sure.

Ugh mines getting worse, the display is starting to black out and show more and more white flashing glitchy squares no matter what cable I use.

In the end I returned the nano texture and took the standard.
Yes, I'm a little crazy, but I couldn't bear to have bought a $ 2k 5k panel and not have the sharpest text possible.
I made too many comparisons with the definition of the imac and in the end I made up my mind.
In fact, the "standard" appears a little brighter, a little more saturated and visibly sharper

That would be the expected behavior as you discovered. The nano-texture is like putting vaseline on the screen. The way the texture stops reflections is by bending light, however that goes both ways. It also has to bend the light coming from the panel which will result in exactly what you describe.

For anyone contemplating a nano-texture screen, I would first exhaust all other ways of taking care of reflections. Try a new room or desk arrangement, consider curtains, etc. While the nano-texture will do a good job of taking care of reflections, it will also negate a portion of what this display has going for it, namely sharpness and color accuracy.

Dang, if it's low for him, it must be wrenching for a tall person.

I just checked them out at the Apple Store… tbh I'd suggest springing for the adjustable-height stand just because it's fun. Really well made.

At 6'3" no way the standard will suit you. I am 5'11", and measuring my current setup is 49cm from desk to top screen edge (not monitor edge). And we do get ergonomic evaluation each 6 months from my employer. So, you are 4" taller than me... and you should go with a VESA or height adjustable.

Apple will sell soon a 3m version of the same braided Thunderbolt cable. But as other have said, this cable is pricey and there are very good alternatives less expensive
I still have not found a 3m/10ft cable that can run the ASD other than the one apple says is "coming soon."

Do you have a link to these alternatives?

^^^According to this article, there aren’t any alternatives right now. There are a number of less expensive 2m options from OWC, Caldigit, and others. I see some questionable offerings on Amazon, but I’d not be very confident they’d be reliable.

Yea for now, I only see 2m options. Hopefully apple can release their 3m option relatively soon otherwise I'd have to go the optical route with a $360 cable by corning!

Hey everyone - I have a 2020 27" iMac, and I'm debating selling it to get a Studio Display that I'd use with my MBP. I keep going back and forth on whether or not this makes sense. Can anyone help me with the benefits of going MBP + Studio display versus the iMac? I'm pretty used to the workflow of everything syncing with iCloud, but my big concern is the iMac losing considerable value over the next few months as they phase out all Intel machines. Any help with this is appreciated!

I also have a 2020 iMac and a 14" MBP M1 Pro, and what you propose makes little sense to me. Spending a greater amount to avoid a possible loss of a lesser amount. The only way it makes sense is if you just want one.
Personally I think having a 2020 iMac is great: it allows me to sit this one out and see if any actual meaningful display improvements are offered in the next several years

Sorry if this has been answered already but has anyone been able to use their Xbox Series X on this yet?

I tried using the apple usb c to digital av adapter and it didn’t work.

I’m assuming it’s not compatible but I figured I’d ask.

I’m loving it so far with my mac. Would be nice to use it for my other ****.

I have a large sliding glass door perpendicular to my standard monitor, and so far have not had an issue with glare when the brightness is turned up.

For those with Macbook Pro 16 and studio display, what do you think about speakers on studio display compare to Macbook Pro 16? Is it better or is it the same?

I got the VESA b/c the built in stand is trash.

The speakers are way better than the 16” and it’s not even close. It’s got more bass and gets way louder without distortion.

I’m just glad I don’t have to connect anything to my MB apart from keyboard and mouse. I wanted a clean, minimalistic setup for productivity and the ASD does exactly that.

Can you please take a photo of the back of the monitor, showing the VESA attachment? I wanted to see whether the kind of fastening could scratch the aluminum back, or whether it floats in between the screw holes. Thanks.

None of the built in stands are trash.
