I guess I have a faulty one.

The left fan is making some crackling noise when I put my ear on the top.. the right side seems to be fine just silent air flow - you can hear clearly the difference between left and right.
I can even hear it when I am 1m away from the monitor, if am behind - have my desk in the middle of the room.

Really disapoiting to go to Apple Store with a 13kg package... to replace a 1,8KEUR Montitor.. other then that I was extremly happy....

Would be interesting to test some in the Apple Store, if they also have it.

is there a longer thunderbolt cable which will work with these screens so I could have the Mac Studio on a shelf underneath my standing desk?

Mine will be going straight back. For a VESA monitor where you are highly likely to snake the cables through the arm and hide them away, why would you put in a fixed power cord that is only 1.8m. Another daft Apple design.
Use a power strip or extension cord? Not many monitors have variable-length power cables.

Not for me - $1500 for me (EDU) and replaces a $1000 27" Thunderbolt display from 2011.

Price on the new Studio Display is inline with current inflation when you think about how much I paid 11 years ago ($1000) for a 27" TB display and still works to this day!

Inflation and electronics (especially computer parts) don't usually scale the same... Look up what an Apple II would cost in 2022 dollars and you will realize how quickly the argument falls apart.

Tech specs have Operating temperature: 50° to 95° F.
Anyone know if this means it will not turn on under 50°? This has been a HUGE issue for my Cinema Display -- uncalled for in a display of this caliber IMO.
That seems pretty standard for the industry. Are you using your display outdoors or in a refrigerated area?

Nothing todo with variable length ??!!? I already have power cord wired up through through the VESA arm bought at teh right length. For a £1500 i have to buy a extension cord to overcome another daft Apple design - can't be bothered to put up with sub standard nonsense.

Apple will sell soon a 3m version of the same braided Thunderbolt cable. But as other have said, this cable is pricey and there are very good alternatives less expensive

The power cable on the LG UltraFine 5K is also 1.8m in length. How would that be any different?

I bought a 3m power cable that unsurprisingly I could attach to the monitor :)

I don't want extension cords hanging in the air because Apple can't design basic stuff.

What would be ideal is to use a standard grounded cable that is common on many electronics. However, Apple is not the only one doing this. Many displays use some sort of proprietary plug.

I love it!

One thing I am unhappy about, is the length of the included Thunderbolt cable. The Thunderbolt port on the monitor is on the right side rear, and I have a 2020 M1 MacBook Pro with two Thunderbolt ports only on its left side. As I place my MBP to the left of the monitor, the cable is too short to reach. In comparison, the old Apple Cinema Display had a 1.2m cable tethered in the middle of the monitor.
Can you use the white Apple power/charge cable that comes with the USB-C charger ?

No, but in an office that turns off heat overnight. The Apple display will refuse to turn on until it warms up, which could take an hour or more. I have a (much cheaper) Samsung display right next to it that pops on every time no matter the temperature. THAT is how a display should work, especially one >$1,000.
If this is how the new displays work, that's a big no go for me.

What happens when you connect that iPad to the monitor?

Another reported still having black bars, which is to be expected. It is up to the iPad how it will display and nothing has changed with iPadOS for it to behave any differently than it does now.
