Another reported still having black bars, which is to be expected. It is up to the iPad how it will display and nothing has changed with iPadOS for it to behave any differently than it does now.

Well the iPad is 4:3, the display 16:9 … of course there will be black bars. Would you want the iPad screen content to be horizontally stretched? That would look horrible.

Now for iPad OS supporting an expanded (instead of mirrored) desktop, that would be awesome, but if such a thing would happen, you‘d hear all about it beforehand in a minutes-long segment during an Apple event as it would be pretty big news indeed.

An iPad’s display is 4:3 (12:9); the Studio Display is 16:9. Black sidebars are expected unless the output were horizontally stretched or zoomed in, which would be terrible.

Or iPadOS could handle outputting different resolutions. But that has nothing to do with the monitor at all and I do not know why people expected things to be different with this monitor. It is an iPadOS limitation not a monitor limitation.

I’m just under 6′. I’ve raised the display 10cm with a stand and it’s fine now.
Thank you for the reply. I’ve got myself a computer monitor stand that’s a 5 1/2 inches tall so it should be fine for me

Do you regret buying the studio display? It’s a very nice 5K display, but $1,599 is quite a lot for what it can do currently. There are some really nice 4K monitors in the 600-1,000 range.
Not at all. Ive been waiting for so long to buy an Apple display, and this ticked all the boxes for me. Its not perfect, but I expect some of the kinks to be ironed out with better software and driver support in time, but if they dont, im still happy with it as it is. This is going to last a long time.

It has replaced a £350 ($500-ish) Iiyama 27" 4K monitor, and this is leaps and bounds ahead of that. Yes, it cost £1000 more, but the Iiyama was not a good monitor. The built-in speakers were comically awful, to the point where I had to buy a small soundbar to strap to the back of it just to make it bearable. It required many many cables, plus a separate power adapter each for the monitor and laptop. It was also a big black plastic lump, and had no built-in webcam, so I'd been using a separate Logitech one. It had some odd flickering issues with my Windows laptop too.

This is the mess that I have now stripped out of my desk and replaced with the Studio Display and a USB-C to 4x USB-A hub. So much less clutter, and the convenience of a single cable to the laptop.

True, but C13 or C5 cords are readily available in varying lengths and I'm not seeing any good reason for Apple to not use either of those standards.
I can’t say about the C5 but the C13 plug is very deep. It’s probably almost as deep as the whole screen, maybe that’s why they didn’t use it.

But I agree with your general comment. Apple should give us a standardized plug and not a proprietary "non-removable" plug

All worthy points. I’m just wondering whether you’d consider buying one of these two monitors instead. Elegant design, great hub. Substantially cheaper though it is 4K and lacks some of the Studio Display’s features.

Dell 4K 27

I just set up my Studio Display. I think it looks great (a bit better than LG 5k ultra fine), and the speakers are amazing. I haven't compared camera to iPhone and iPad, but it actually looks OK to me. One strange thing. The firmware on my studio display is: "Version 15.3 (Build 19D8050)" (About this Mac -> Graphics / Displays). In John Gruber's review, he reports his firmware is: 15.4. The apple folks say the problem was introduced with late firmware change...

- the tech has really stagnated. They are releasing the same panel from 6-7 years ago. And at the same price point as well. What the hell is going on?
  • Not enough market demand for desktop panels above 4K. Gamers have different priorities, for example. Basically only LG makes that one 5K panel, and Apple seems to be stuck on having optimized MacOS for that resolution.
  • Inflation and general tech supply shortages since 2020 drive price levels up.
I wouldn’t expect a lot to change here in the next few years.

Here's mine attached to an M1 Mac mini. You might be able to see I covered up the webcam with the light bar. As everyone else has noted, it's shockingly bad, so I'm using my Anker cam until a patch is rolled out.

I'm not at all worried about the webcam quality, though – it seems clear with iOS on board that it should be straightforward for them to roll out improvements. But right now, it's terrible.

The speakers are amazing for integrated speakers, but my Bose are still better. That said, I wouldn't be offended if I only had the display's speakers for music – they're pretty good.

Height-wise, it's exactly the same height as the Dell 2720Q I had in a VESA mount beforehand. (I totally screwed up and ordered the one with the stand not realizing you couldn't easily swap one in later.)

Coming from the Dell the quality difference is noticeable. The Studio Display is always waaaay glossier than the Dell, but I'll get used to it.

I am very curious if Apple will ever do anything with the A13 outside of processing video and audio. It seems like a distinct benefit that no other display can touch. They probably won't do anything, but one can hope.

Now I'm thinking about jailbreaking my display...

I think the Dell looks perfectly fine, but the actual panel doesn't seem any better than my Iiyama. The BenQ is not to my taste. Neither have a built-in camera, and the Dell has no built-in speakers.

I'm generally not one to be swayed by price. I certainly dont have money to throw away, but I would rather spend more for something if I know I'm likely to get better quality (and most importantly) great service and aftercare. One of the main reasons I've stuck with Apple products is the excellent support I've consistently had over the years, and everything has generally lasted a very long time. With the exception of iPhones, I can usually find a discount of some kind on Apple products, so rarely pay full price.

Lol just tried the webcam in the Studio Display it is just as horrible as the reviews mention. Hopefully Apple will release the software update soon. I still don't understand why this was not picked up in QC testing though...
The webcam in my iMac Pro was shockingly horrible, too. Not sure why Apple can't just use great cameras across all their products

Just HDR, mini-LED and high refresh/ProMotion. I think today all of that in a 27" 5K would be around $3200?

Right. Not only would Apple have to introduce a new aspect ratio for iPad apps, they’d also need apps to be able to switch resolution while they are running, which isn’t something that currently exists (except for screen rotation, which is its separate thing).

One other thing to note – Dell is shipping me a U2723QE to replace my 2720Q due to some flickering issues, so I'll be able to compare the Studio Display to that monitor. Should be interesting with the 2723's new "IPS Black" feature.

I have bought and got rid of a bunch of monitors knowing what I really wanted was a new Apple display. Bought 2 of the 32" Ergo 4k LG and found 32" to be too big and I couldn't take advantage of the width cause I dont want to move my head so much. Also unsatisfied wit the ppi for text. I got the LG Ultrafine 21.5 and its great PPI but the port keeps breaking off by yanking the USB cable when I adjusted the Visa mount. The display is ok but kinda small. Got another 27" LG that was $650 and again the 4k ppi was not right. Also the HDR on the LG monitors is terrible looking on Mac. Colors unnatural compared to MacBook although I did get pretty close to matching them manually. I tried other options with Dell and LG monitors and nothing was just right. So much time wasted reading Amazon reviews, trying to figure out how to get close to Apple resolution. Dealing with dorky buttons and hidden joysticks to make volume or color/brightness adjustments. Ive decided that I either want an Apple display or nothing at all.

Yea yea yea price, apple tax, Tim Crook bla bla bla. if you look at text and you use the monitor daily while also want the color to match the MacBook, smooth response, smooth brightness and volume adjustment, why settle for these other windows monitors. No one delivered a quality monitor and I'm not betting thats going to change. And all you guys pitching 4k monitors in 28-32" displays are missing the point. The text isn't sharp on those. I want to see a lot of smaller text on the page. I have 20/20 vision. Why are you on the waiting list to buy a Tesla? Why dont you go buy an electric Kia and get a federal discount? There is no monitor with retina PPI other than teh Apple. Dont pitch the LG because I dont trust it. My main port broke twice and it doesnt detect auto brightness. There is no other quality option for Mac. I guess you area all using monitors for graphic design or video. Maybe its for watching movies with all the HDR crying. Sorry for the rant. Ive been waiting for an Apple display since 2012 when I got my MBP retina.

Have one on march 24 delivery but claimed one today in store. Will go pick up.

Lolll, the rant was wonderful. Love to hear your thoughts/experience when the Studio Display is up and running!
