Does it matter what version of software is on the atv2?
Bumping this question (since I asked it previously and didn't get an answer). I have two ATV2's that are already jailbroken, and a 3rd which is not and is on the latest OS version. Is that last one just as valuable on eBay or is it no longer jailbreakable (or hobbled such that it can only do a tethered jailbreak)?

4.4.4 and 5.02 are both jail breakable.

I would leave it at 4.4.4 and explain that it can be upgraded if needed.

Wow... that is crazy! I have no need to J/B my :apple:TV2 (I have three), so I'll be putting them on eBay this morning!:)

Sold mine yesterday for £130, and I intend to buy an AppleTV 3 refurb. for £85. Pretty pleased.

Crazy selling ATV2's when it looks like the 3 might never be jailbroken

I don't know, I'm tempted to sell mine. I've no real interest in jailbreaking, and 1080p would be a nice feature to get "for free".

My only concerns are the random streaming issues with Home Sharing (my current device is perfect), and I don't like selling stuff online. Pity Apple don't do a "swap your ATV2 for a ATV3!" service. :p

A smart business, say Best Buy etc should do this. They could make some good money.

Since Best Buy seems to be on the ropes these days, they could train their Geek Squad to jailbreak ATV2's, install XBMC, and sell those to customers at a premium. ;)

True, but where would that fall in the business world as far as ethics go..

When I got my ATV3 on launch day I gave my ATV2 away to a friend, who has subsequently bought both an iPad and iPhone he liked it so much. I should get a commission from Apple :)

As an owner of a JB'd ATV2, I'd definitely say that it's worth the $200 some people are charging. Thats what... a month and a half of paying for cable which you no longer have to do?

Someone bid on mine for $150, so I guess it will be gone no matter what. I'm hoping to get $175 for it, but $150 is $50 more than I had, right? I have no plans to Jailbreak it, so upgrading to ATV3 would give me 1080p and $50. . . I guess that's not a bad thing. :D

That's my plan, just posted mine on Ebay (uk). I started at £1 and a Buy it now at £150 (10% of the sale going to Birmingham Dogs Home).

keep in mind ebay fees and paypal fees.

I just sold my 160GB ATV1 for $120...i was happy with that

That said, if you jailbreak the gen1's are money......I really miss having the storage on the ATV2's

----------

that's how I was, my ATV1 had sat in a box for the past 3 years after a move cross country. Was about to just toss it till I saw ebay prices

Funny that you say that, I just got a 160GB ATV1 that costed around $120. Haha. I traded my uncle a jailbroken ATV2 in exchange for an ATV1 I saw online. He ordered it off eBay, we traded, I hacked my ATV1, everyone's happy. :)

I actually prefer the ATV1 over the ATV2/3, and the only feature I'm missing over a more recent ATV is Netflix, which I can watch via Xbox 360. So no real losses there.

If anyone is interesting in selling a pre 5.0 AppleTV 2 I would be interested in buying one. So you know there are specific branch builds of XBMC that don't work on 5.0+ (specifically the PVR build). Keeping it at <5.0 can be useful to some people. I doubt it is worth more as there aren't many people who use a branch build. General XBMC works fine on 5.0+.

I'm not sure how to private message here, but if anyone is interested in selling one, I can be reached at amon1 ==at== searchtheweb ==.== com

The jailbroken atv2 is wonderful. Theres nothing you can buy in the streaming area for $200 that gets the thousands if tv and movies it gets plus lots more. I have a jb atv2 in the family room. Dont even use the roku anymore. A still not jailbroken atv2in the mbr and a fully jb atv2 still sitting unopened in the box. When i have time i'll jb the one in the mbr.
