Seems to me that a lot of people out there still don't know much about Apple TV. Shouldn't Apple give it its own Navigation button on their website now? I think it's ready to be shown to the world!

I can't wait to get meself an AppleTV at the end of this month. Not that I have a use for it yet, though. :p

wow... as if this thread hasn't been derailed enough already we're going to resurrect the age-old "fair use" discussion....

Actually, if someone is just ripping a DVD that they purchased for their own personal enjoyment, then I think that's perfectly fine. If, though, they turn around and share that ripped DVD with friends, family, and heaven-forbid, the Internet, then that's crossing the line of fair use. The ripped copy should *replace* the DVD in their own use. No reason we should feel locked into using physical medium just because it's the "law". The law is to prevent piracy, and scaring people into not ripping their DVDs is just one way they tackle it. Don't be blinded by the truth.

- how do sources work now? When you select my movies do you have to select a source?

You select "Shared Movies" instead of "My Movies"

- What if it is only connected to one computer? Do you still need to select a source?

If you are connected for syncing to one computer, you will now see all the iTunes content in ATV in a unified list. Synced stuff (cached) will play back from the local hard drive, streamed stuff from the host. If you quit iTunes or shut down the server, only the synced content will show on ATV.

- People are talking about apple tv showing up in the speaker list to stream from itunes. Can you stream to multiple apple tv's at once? That would be great for parties.

Yes

- is the fastforward and rewind performance improved?

Yes

Kevin

Thanks for taking the time to reply, I appreciate it (and can't wait to get home).

In Apple TV Take 2, will we finally be able to manually synch -- i.e. upload video to the ATV and leave it there without maintaining it in our iTunes libraries? That was what most annoyed me about Take 1.

(All apologies if this has been asked and answered. I couldn't find it.)

No, iTunes keeps the data in "sync". Deleting it from iTunes will cause it to be removed from ATV.

Kevin

Can someone educate me on what's so cool about it other than to charge me for entertainment that I already pay for with Cable/Satellite?

I can only speak for myself. I do not have cable or satellite service, infact, i cancelled my $90/month service shortly after this unit came out. ($1080/yr)

I have purchased one or two cable tv series for about $20 a piece, and even if i did go a little crazy on purchasing TV content, the ROI works up to about 25-30 season passes. And then you are just break even. Im okay with 2, thanks. So that sets me at what? $750 in savings year to date, coming this may?

The rest of my content consists of DVD's i own that are ripped and streamed to my apple tv. I also subscribe to quite a few podcasts, some of which are HD. There are some pretty good productions out there if you know where to look.

Having on demand access to all of my video library is a great value to me. The latest photos taken on the iphones or dslr act as the "screen saver" on my TV.

I have kids. They like movies too, and are rough on DVD's. They have scratched some beyond playable. The AppleTV is again functioning as an insurance policy against DVD damage which are about $20-$25 a pop. Not to mention, when i want to play a movie, it plays -- as opposed to 5 minutes fiddling around with warnings and DVD menus that you are not "allowed" to skip.

I am not a sports fan, and could care less about any live events. Offline content is fine for me. The TV has an ATSC tuner, so I could technically get this all over air for free.

In the end, i think the product is great for my situation. I may or may not rent movies on itunes....i have never been a fan of rentals. It might be good every now and then. At least i wouldnt have to worry about late fees and returning the damn thing.

Why would they use MKV when their own MOV container can do exactly what they need?

maybe - but regardless if they ARE using .mov that's actually worse. The people over had Handbrake have already said that if its uses a .mov format then Handbrake may not beable to support it - I guess the actual formatting of .mov files isn't well documented. Note that none of Handbrake's files are .mov files. At least with an .mkv we might be able to make files with HB and trick iTunes into passing them on.

airtunes

has anyone mentioned that airtunes is available on the apple tv take 2? i can now stream music from itunes to living room tv...

interesting considering i can already play it from the appletv.

or was that already there and i'm dumb?

Restore

Can someone try to do a factory restore after installing take 2 and see if you get the old os. I am not sure if i like the new one and want the option to downgrade.
Thanks

Thanks, keep us updated! Dying to know if Handbrake encoded files will be 5.1 :)

From the HB forum, it sounds like they'll need to tear apart an aTV download and work backwards. It likely will require a new HB preset (assuming it is possible and they're willing to do it).

Anyway, all macs are now 'N' the Airport Extreme is now 'N', so the next item to become 'N' will obviously be the Express.

Unless they snuck something in when I wasn't looking, the mini is NOT N.

Darn it. That makes me disappointed. I would have much rather had it count up by episode. Too bad there's not an option to just flip it.

I don't get that either. The ipod does the same thing with podcasts, last first. I don't see why apple insists on the odd reversed order with no way to flip it.

Changed the way it displays TV shows...

I hate that it has changed the way it displays my TV shows... I spent ages entering the meta data for my TV shows, and now it just lists them by show name instead of episode ID. How difficult can it be for them to list the show, like it lists the artist in the Music section, then list the seasons as if they were albums, and then the episodes as if they were tracks? Maybe I'm entering the meta data wrong, but I'm copying the template that came with episodes of Lost that I bought from iTunes.

If I have to re-enter a bunch of meta data, I'm going to have to pull this face

Kevin/imlucid:

It appears from your signature URL you were involved with AppleTV at the start... Were you also involved with Take 2, or can you not say?

I'm just curious if all the feedback, complaining and so on around these boards has been making its way back to Apple vis-a-vis you...

:D

Yeah right. Given Apple's hard and fast rule about employees posting on rumor message boards, I have a very hard time believing that someone from the ":apple:TV team" is posting on here telling us all about the work he did on it. He's just a guy who knows a lot about the :apple:TV, for whatever reason. And besides, Apple wouldn't hire someone who can't spell 'hobby.' ;)

i absolutely adore being able to control my AppleTV's music from my computer, it's probably my favorite new feature.

Flickr integration

Can you sign into Flickr on the AppleTV? Or will it only display those photos that you have made public?

Its new.

Yes you could always play your iTunes music on the AppleTV but you could not stream to remote speakers throughout your house and use the AppleTV to control the music - now you can.

When you download a podcast directly to the appletv:

1. Can you delete it directly from the appletv and not have to sync it w/ your computer?

2. Are you actually downloading it to the appletv or does it just stream?

Music Video Playlists would be awesome

- Can music videos (or anything else) be played continuously from a playlist?
- Can music or movies be made to repeat?
- Can a playlist or category be played using Shuffle?

Thanks very much for answering. Any insight as to why, or are these things that may be in the pipeline, or are they considered non-issues?

Music Video Playlists would be awesome, a lot of people I know who have seen my :apple:TV say that it is the one thing that would tip them over the edge to buying one.

I know, I spend quite a bit of time on their forums/IRC channels performing countless test encodes and realizing that at the rate they continue to improve the software, my DVD collection will never be fully ripped (I've restarted more times than I can count).

On their forums, someone does mention being able to take a H.264 video and AC3 audio stream into Quicktime Pro, exporting to .mov and having it work.

The way to do it using HB is to encode it as an AVI/264/AC3 followed by opening it in Quicktime Pro and doing a Save As. This will save it as a .mov/ac3 file without having to re-encode it etc. It will simply change the container. Make sure you have Perian 1.0 installed. Not 1.1. For some reason Perian 1.1 will not play AVI .264 files. I actually found a Perian 1.1 that does support it which you can find in the Perian forum off their website.
