I'm wondering why movies can't be purchased in HD. You'd think it would be easy to implement; just charge a couple bucks over the cost of the movie in SD.

It would be a HUGE seller. The convenience of buying and downloading online with the quality of HD.

I don't like the idea of paying $4.99 to download something that'll go away tomorrow. I'm more than willing to pay $12.99 to buy a version I can keep and watch forever, though.

Are the studios worried about piracy? That's a barn door that's already wide open, and the horses left years ago. They might as well just accept that there will be piracy, and give us convenient, legal ways to purchase what we want.

Also, does this new firmware play more formats? Would be nice to be able to play h.264 MKV files and xvid on the AppleTV. I'd buy one tomorrow.

Any chance 4:3 resolution is supported now (without pillorboxing, that is?). I have a 4:3 CRT TV that has the right inputs, and I'd like to get an :apple:tv, but not if I have to deal with black boxes everywhere. Thanks for any info!

Kevin,

Thank you for all your postings! A few questions.... I know all of us here have been holding back on backing up our owned (key word since it makes it legal) DVD collections to put them on our ATV's.

1) is AC3 sent over HDMI if we are using HDMI?

Yes

2) do we have to use HDMI and the toslink? (i have the onkyo 805 so it can handle the hdmi only).

It will output over both.

3) is the AC3 pass through (receiver/processor decodes it)?
4) any plans for linear PCM for the audio?

I'm sure about the above.

5) any chance we can use the USB port for an external hard drive (i'd love one you can stack onto the top of the ATV that has same look and feel).

Apple hasn't made any public statement about the USB port other than it is for maintenance.

Kevin

So...
1. Satellite or cable for broadcast TV.
2. DVD / Blu-Ray Player for existing discs or store rentals.
3. Apple TV in case I want to buy a TV show that I could have recorded with a DVR for free.

It sure doesn't sound like a convergence device at all to me.
If the only use you'll get out of an AppleTV is "to buy a TV show that I could have recorded with a DVR for free", then I'd agree with you ... the AppleTV (the way you'd use it, anyway) is definitely not a convergence device.

As you can see from the other responses in this thread, for many other folks, it's a great convergence device.

Try both to see which one looks best to you. On my side - I have a Samsung 47" 1080p LCD - I use to have it on 720p - but both looked good to me, I now have it on 1080p.

(On my Dish receiver I let my TV do the upscaling because the scalier in their box is awful)

Thanks, I can't really see any difference so I'll just leave it on 1080i

(Possibly) Silly Question

In Apple TV Take 2, will we finally be able to manually synch -- i.e. upload video to the ATV and leave it there without maintaining it in our iTunes libraries? That was what most annoyed me about Take 1.

(All apologies if this has been asked and answered. I couldn't find it.)

This may be a dumb question, but can I use the Apple TV on a conventional 27" CRT TV?
Unless your tv has component (not composite) in and a widescreen mode, the results will be unsatisfactory. That is why I use mine only for audio/music. I really wish that Apple would add a 4:3 setting to :apple:TV; they already have it for the iPod, so what is so difficult? I will probably never go to a widescreen hdtv until I am forced to do so when my current tv dies. There are some things that are simply better on a conventional 4:3 tv, such as movies originally created in 4:3 (most all that I ever watch).

I would however like to know if there are any extra music features in take2, such as searching or playlist creating. Can anyone tell me?

two things:

they've got wise to the UK customers with US iTunes Store accounts. so no using all the great new features....

on that note, although i'm sure it is not apple's fault the lack of international content, they should have though of something else as the background pic - having to look at all the latest and greatest shiny film / TV posters is actually very offputting and only serves to REMIND you how crippled your non-US itunes store really is.

am still puzzled how they've worked out the loophole that many in the Uk were using to buy US iTunes content..... the account is still valid as my mac can still buy all i want....but not the AppleTV.....

So if i buy an apple tv, and use my american credit card with my american address they will not let me rent a movie because i'm in Canada?

I honestly am not sure about that. I'm a bit of a theatrical purist in the sense that I like to sit dead center due to the way soundtracks tend to be mixed... by an engineer sitting dead center in front of the screen!

I would check them both out and decide for yourself whether viewing angle matters more than picture.
I immediately discounted you as any kind of expert when you said you liked the WEGA's. :p

Well, that is a good point. It would be great to not buy or rent DVD's. However, most people have a collection of DVD's they've purchased. Again, I would find myself having to switch over to the DVD player to watch those, and back to Apple TV to watch content there and over to Satellite to watch it. I just wish the Apple TV could replace my Tivo, and it had a DVD player built in.

While it is possible that some future version of ATV will have DVR/Tivo like functions, I say no way they ever have a built in DVD player to make it all-in-one functional. My reasoning? Steve Jobs apparently does not favor the concept of DVDs or any sort of solid state unit used to transfer or show video. To see some evidence of this, I would direct you to the Apple Event in August 2007 where Steve announced the Aluminum iMacs, iWork and iLife '08. When he gets around to talking about iDVD, he makes it sound, rather pointedly, as though it is a useless app that no one really uses or needs anymore. That may explain, in part, why iDVD saw very little in the way of new features in the '08 version. Steve openly says in that demo that it is all about online streaming content now.

If that is how the CEO feels, then I don't see Apple ever including a DVD player as part of ATV. Keep in mind this is the same guy who took the 3.5" floppy drives out of the Mac when that was still pretty much industry standard.

Now why... WHHHYYYYYYY can't we get HD movies through Front Row on our Macs??? Apple wants you to go buy an AppleTV to do that... but I don't have a widescreen or HD TV. That's what I have my new Mac with a Radeon HD card for.

Doesn't support the HD DRM as well as the industries require is the primary reason.

Has the photo navigation been improved with Take-2?

Or is it still via slideshows?

(Would be nice to see a grid like menu, such as that used on the iPod's)

Still a slideshow in this release.

Kevin

Sorry but when someone says its illegal to change the format of your DVDs for your own use when that is obvious 'fair use' something has to be said.

More on track has anyone of the hacked AppleTV owners gotten an HD DD5.1 movie yet and checked the format? My fear is it is going to be a standard MKV file but we will have no means of getting them on the AppleTV since iTunes doesn't accept that format and so it can't be syncing to the AppleTV.
Why would they use MKV when their own MOV container can do exactly what they need?

First Crash

I was just here reading the forums and the :apple:TV was in its screen saver and poof... Apple logo.... weird blue lines near the top of the screen, flashing lines... and straight to the diagnostic menu.

Looks like there are still kinks that need to be worked out.

Kevin, in what order are the Podcast favorites organized in? At first glance, they seem to be in order of addition. Shouldn't it be in order of most viewed?

anyone with a already patched AppleTV updated to Take 2?
Supposedly Plugins won't work? Enabling SSH?

happy risky updating )
