Better audio support and a bigger remote and I’ll upgrade my 2021 ATV

It's sort of interesting how Apple makes iPhones -- meant to be used in your hand -- that are often too large for comfortable one handed use

...and they also make a TV remote -- obviously meant to be used in one hand -- that many consider to be too small and thin for the most comfortable usage

Same company ... same usage need (handheld single hand usage) ... very different results and issues

Let it bitstream audio, please!
My receiver can handle anything so please just pass through the audio.
I hate my Nvidia Shield and wish I could finally ditch the last Google product in the house.

But if there are rumors about a cheaper model of course they won’t do anything with the audio support. Then their target audience is not the people with Shields.

You and me both. 👍

I hope the next edition includes a built-in fan again. My ATV 4K Gen 3 overheats and starts throttling and lagging after just 40 minutes of Blu-ray remux playback. It literally gets burning hot lol
Use infuse and everything will be fine. No fan is needed.

I'd also like this

one would think they could make one of these now, with a low power and very efficient A chip
I would have liked this built as a “dumb” AirPlay endpoint, e.g., for bringing to hotel rooms or on-the-road presentations. This application isn’t traditionally an Apple target market, though, and is (thankfully) evaporating anyway as AirPlay spreads to more devices.

That same use case is why I'm hoping for a current gen SoC in the new ATV. Being able to max out PSP emulation with all the bells and whistles would be grand.
I didn't understand the 2022 model outside of not having to manufacture old chips anymore, but emulation opened up a whole new world of possibilities.

I wouldn't even mind if they slapped an M1 in there now. My 2021 model is struggling with PSP upscaling, I read that the 2022 model is better, but a somewhat current chip should rip through it.

PCX2 seems to run well on Apple silicon Macs too, so we might get some PS2 emulation in the future, which would be a dream. I've been playing with the thought of buying a PS2 again, but then I have to get a converter to even plug it into my TV and I don't want to deal with a wired controller, so the entire ordeal would cost as much as buying a new Apple TV. So in the 12 years I've owned Apple TVs, for the first time, I'm all for a faster chip and more storage (oh, and if they could get on that thing where OS updates don't delete roms anymore, that'd be great too)

I’d love one with an M-processor in it. I bet that would amp up my gaming performance! I’m only a light gamer, so a wireless controller and AppleTV are good enough for me.

If it's just a storage increase then to me it's not worth getting it over the current apple 4k tv. But if it adds full DTS support and can run IOS apps and say slap on a M4 processor.....okay then take my money now apple.

What does a Apple TV box offer that I cannot get on my roku based TV? I can get Apple Tv streaming service ifI want to on there. in fact, I did when I first got my Mac mini for free, but I did not find much of interest on it so did not contiune with the service.

This question has to start being labeled spam at this point ,it has been asked over and over and over again

4k up to 144hz to match my tv
USB powered
What would really be a game changer for me is it being capable of being tethered of phone and not needing WiFi

  1. Apple TV A16: $99, no camera
  2. Apple TV Air 😝 M2: $299, camera
  3. Apple TV Pro M4: $499, integrates with Vision Pro somehow (gaming?), remote camera
C’mon people, think outside the… box

I have ATV, Roku and Fire TV. The only thing about Roku is the annoying volume on the right side of the remote. For me, Fire TV's interface is terrible. ATV has a clean interface. The remote is okay.
I would like to have a browser. Yes it makes little sense but some videos only stream online. More apps that are available to iPad would be nice too. I have the 64 version from 2021. Sad to learn it can only store apps and games. No music, photos or videos. I guess Apple does that so they can sell iCloud for that.
Couldn’t you stream with AirPlay?

Nah not really. I have an original 4k on my tv in my rec room.. and a brand new third gen 4k in my bedroom... I don't notice any difference..... I do however have a firestick 4k in one of my guestrooms which is only about 10 months old and that thing is slow and lagging already. You get what you pay for.
Hmm that's odd considering I have three different Amazon Firestick 4k and one of them is 2 years old and it still operates fine. Even though I have a lot of Apple products I have zero interest in an Apple TV which is priced 5x what you can buy a Firestick 4k for. Amazon has these on sale all the time for around $30 and even if they only last 2 years, so what, since they are so inexpensive you can replace them and they are also physically small. An AppleTV at $50 I might buy, but at $99 its a no-sale to me.

I still have the original 4K. Do the new ones really run any faster?
Yes. You don't really notice it in general use but I have some very high bitrate videos in my Plex library and my original AppleTV 4K isn't fast enough to play them. The 2nd gen plays them easily.

I dont know what more they can do outside of adding a USB C port to enable users to hook up a webcam for facetime calls. The current implimentation of FaceTime on Apple Tv is a bad joke. You got to mount your phone or connect an Ipad (It doesn't even work with a mac) and its just messy at best.

The simple solution would be for them to put out a new one with a USB C port so you can buy an overpriced seperate Camera and just have it all work like that.

Short of that, idk what you can do with the AppleTV anymore hardware wise.
It's lacking in the sound dept. What they can do is allow it to passthrough uncompressed Dolby True HD, Uncompressed ATMOS, and DTS HD, DTS-X and support Hi-Ress lossless.

It would be nice to see Apple finally add support for lossless audio as well as Atmos from apps like Infuse & Plex.
